As
many of you know, we recently revealed that Player vs. Player combat
(PvP) will be included in LOTRO. While the way in which this will be
implemented in the game is still under discussion, we do know, and can
share, three things:
- PvP combat in LOTRO will be consensual. If you do not wish to participate, you do not have to.
PvP is NOT the focus of the game. It will primarily be part of our "elder play."
No matter what form PvP in LOTRO takes, we are committed to making sure
it fits into Middle-earth in as lore-appropriate a way as possible.
More
details will be announced as they become available. We welcome your
discussion and ideas on how you feel PvP could best be implemented!
Please keep your discussions about PvP in this forum only, to keep the
rest of the forums on-topic. Thanks!

Please, if you have to make LOTR pve-only, at least be honest about it. This is ridiculous.
Yeah that's pretty much what I'd thought it come down to. Ironic how actually trying to vary from the formulaic approaches of mixing PVE and PVP brought on a years long firestorm of disapproval and/or whining.
Fortunantly, I guess its too late in the development cycle to add the "evil races" and "realm versus realm pvp" that... WoW has. Possibly the most beloved game on MMORPG.com of all time.
Its good to know that players do get what they ask for after all isn't it?
In effect though, the only way this will impact gameplay is I'll have to /ignore more people sending random tells challenging me to duels. Personally I have no problem with that.
yup so its not gonna be a PvP fest, where 13 year olds brag to each other constantly about who 'pwned' each other and 'phat lewtz' are the only driving force...
Looks like my kinda game

Mentioned as part of "elder" so close to end game? Does this mean a mad dash to reach that point? If so, that is exactly what we will see, considering us "old folks" do not have as much free time to invest getting there
They have not listed anything deftinte yet, so I guess time will tell, considering this appears to almost be an afterthought, it would explain why "elder". As they (Turbine) have time to justify and implement this.

Aye, so true Morrigan.. you'd hope to think that the money desperate corporates that back MMO's will finally realise that a game that repels 80% of the WoW player base, and instead attracts mature players (yes sad old people like me actually like a storyline and a helpful non-combatant community) would actually garner them high rewards.
Maybe we will one day get a true MMORPG instead of the multitude of gankfests and grief factories that currently exist.
Rant? if you like.. but im allowed, im an old git.

Anyway, the ony thing we can do it wait and see how they decide to do this. Everything be bantered around that is it duel's and arena fighting to FFA PvP (for those that want that)
Until Turbine says exactly how it will fit and what part it will play, I guess all we can do is wait and see.
There were some really good ideas tossed out there how it might be done (tavern brawls, etc) that would limit it. *shrug* who knows. As this was not really done in the books.
This reminds me of Turbines recent announcement about Solo Content now being adding to DnD, at that time I was also like.. HUH?

No but if they had done it right and made it good vs. evil with a realm style combat similar to DAoC they wouldn't be able to beat off all the people interested with a stick.

I think part of the problem here will be how they are to stick to the story and not just make something (ie: good vs evil) to make it fit.
Licensing restrictions or some such sort?

They could easily stick to the story and put all or Soron and Soruman's forces against the humans, leaf-eaters, and hobbits.
I think it was foolish of them to move off the original idea of it NOT being set during the timeline of the fellowship to begin with. However they most certainly could work with that in a RvR enviroment and with some proper care and attention from the staff via events and such it could be a VERY impressive game.
However Turbine is doing it so it is going to be somewhere just below mediocre at best.

Imagine any gaming company doing that

Maybe they could do two versoin - one for carebears and one for gamers ;-)
For those that are upset, Im a bit confused on why. You've known all along that PvP wouldnt be a focus of the game. If PvP is important to you, then I would suggest looking elsewhere.
There are several hardcore pvp games coming out. I read that Darkfall is 100% open PvP environment.
Personally the only time Ive ever enjoyed PvP was when a BH in SWG was hunting me. It added a really fun element to the game. Otherwise, the typical PvP experience for me has been some sorta challenge that comes from nowhere or someone who gets upset because I took his kill. Its never friendly and usually ends in taunts or foul language.
I would suspect that a PvE focused game like LOTR will draw in a more mature crowd. In addition the lore of the books will attract more of the same folks.
Im not keen on Turbine, but the community good be a great one
Been gaming online since MUD's appeared on the net, through Ultima, the start of EQ all the way through to SWG, EQ2, CoH and beyond, hell i was gaming before they were on PC's (pen and paper with friends in my early teens)
So if im a 'carebear' im not a gamer?... I beg to disagree little man
Think yourself lucky im not a PvPer, think of someone with my experience chasing you down
Muhahahaha.. etc
Tam
Using the word "carebear" makes you sound stupid by the way...
I'm with Tamalan and admriker444 on this one all the way.
Make it consensual PVP or forget it - whatever 'badge' you put on it RVR ,PVP etc - if its not consensual the resulting community will be griefers, gankers and campers.
If you want PVP then look elsewhere at all the 'me too' MMORPG's already available and in development by companies who continue to listen to the PVP 'minority' and not the silent 'majority' who want an enjoyable pastime with a community that cares - to spend their hard-earned dollars on.
another old fart
DEFINITION OF REALITY: Graphics ok, Sound ok, Gold drops need more work...
Any PvP in this game will be pointless and stupid. The single biggest design mistake they made was not allowing players to be orcs, goblins, or any of Sauron's other creatures.
There is no "lore appropriate" way to incorporate PvP with only one side being played. Absolutely none.
I tend to agree with the last part of this post, however the first part of this post will depend on how it is implemented. If Turbine is smart, and I think they are despite popular MMORPG.com troll opinion, they will make the evil forces playable. However, that would push back release by probably a year, more or less.
How awesome would that game be though? I don't think there is one gamer that wouldn't want to try that. Cmon Turbine, do it!

I wouldn't want to try that. To many lore and gameplay issues with playable evil races.
Given, at least the game isn't out and the devs they have some time to think it thru. Unlike DDO, Turbine's other game w/c didn't seem to have been as big as they hoped. So they added PVP and drow, yay. I just hope the suits at Turbine aren't thinking "ADD PVP!!!!" is the solution to their subscriber problems.
I don''t really know when Humankind will die out but i''m guessing about 6 years before WOW.
