Good news:

Until now, the free trial of ffxiv only allowed players to reach level 35 and play the basic jobs and races available in A Realm Reborn.

With Patch 5.3 planned for August 11, changes are coming to the free trial experience.

New players will be able to:

  • Play until level 60 instead of level 35.
  • Play all the quests up to Heavensward with patch 3.56
  • Access classes such as Dark Knight, Astrologian and Machinist
  • Play as an Au'Ra

These huge changes are coming with Patch 5.3, and will be included in the Starter Edition.

MMORPG Staff, might want to change the name of the Article.  It's not going F2P to 60, it's just an expanded trial account.  BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!

It's straight forward RPG mechanics; It's not BDO with action combat, parkour, or platforming like GW2 or anything gimmicky if that's what you are looking for. Though if you play always standing in one spot using one attack you're gonna die a lot. Dungeons have varying types of mechanics that can be a challenge to learn. There are puzzles, lots of things to do outside combat and crafting doesn't suck and isn't pointless. The community is nice, you get to know people on your server over time. Main story line gets good right before first expansion, side quests can be hit or miss. I will say the Hildibrand quest line is awesome though. It's actually one of the few MMOs I consider worth the sub price, and I was a major skeptic at one point.

Agreed. Once you transition to Subscription, you can't go back. It's actually kind of counter productive but I know why they do it that way.

The only difference between a trial and a subscription account is access to Retainers that by design give access to the MB. If you make your account Subscription, then fall back to free to play until you get everything to 60, they have no way to lock you out of the market boards and it becomes an RMT haven.

That being said, if you are considering a trial, make sure you have accomplished all you want to on trial version before you transition to subscription. Losing out on the MB is not a big issue in FF14. Gil carries very little weight outside the Market board and once you hit 50 all gear can be funneled through tomes like Poetics. Even crafting gear can be obtained with scrips and other currencies.

I did the free trial a couple years ago...This is the only MMO I did not reach level 2.....It was that bad....I like to explore more than do quests, but when I tried to go a different direction, it gave me an error message saying 'Your quest in not in that direction" and it wouldn't let me move. I don't know if that was just the free trial or if the entire game is that way, but I had seen enough.

I was a player of the original FF14 game.
I am interested but this trial excludes me.

Smart marketing to lure in old players looks different..

That sounds awful. Thanks for saving me the bandwidth and time of downloading, creating a toon and discovering this myself :D

It's definitely not like this past the tutorial. Other than the main story you can level completely outside of quests.

Beast tribes, leveling dungeon roulette, Guildhests, fates, Guildleves, Levequests, treasure hunting. I honestly don't think there is any game that offers more ways to level than this game lol. You can actually level a second class in a few days once you unlock a few features. You can even max fishing in a few days doing deep see fishing every two hours. They even have crafting beast tribes to 70, and soon to 80. They pretty much hand levels to you. Unless you are absolutely lazy, there is no reason to complain about the leveling experience in this game. If you chose to level via the story then it goes as fast as you can read or hit skip.
