"What continues to be a problem for covenants is players continually fretting about which covenant will offer the best abilities for their preferred content."
That's the problem with retail, way too many selfish me me me players, or lemming players gotta be identical to everyone else, suck it the f up, going with what you like isn't that hard, it's called making a decision for yourself. It's why retail has no choices to make, which totally blows the rpg out of it.
I want to read your whole article but pretty much skipped huge swaths of it, trying not to be shadowland out by the time it launches in 4/5 months'ish.
When you think about it why would anyone want to be in the beta (outside need to be people) once it drops you have 2 years ahead of you to enjoy, which is a pretty long haul.

It's kind of a moot point when what they like is being optimal. It's not as simple as you make it out to be. I can attest to that, I used to do it all the time and I sometimes fall back into it.
On to the article, the point about the levelling through an expansion is also something I didn't think about. The leveling portion takes you up to a certain point then you have the content that came after cap whereas the story of the next expansion will start at that point in terms of leveling flow. Looks like it'll be a wiki job to catch up on some plot points, for me at least. Truth be told I've enjoyed going back through the wiki and reading up on some of the characters like Illidan and The Lich King. I reckon I'd benefit from reading/listening to some of the novels.
The fact it’s a hard choice makes it more interesting than if the decision didn’t matter at all.
That is the most important thing I read in the article. I don't want a game where everyone is just perfect for everything. Otherwise why have anything at all.
The parts that make you special are what make you strong in certain ways and weak in others. Having a class that's the best at M+, Raid, Pvp, etc... In all aspects means people will just play that one class. I personally like the idea of having different strong classes and characters for things, and having to make extra characters just means I get to play the game more.
I know about 75% of the story in every expansion other than Mists which I know the least about. If I can just level in an expansion of my choice and fo the side quests and achievements I’d be happy.

I'm not doubting that, i should say, i know that. Overall it's Blizz's fault for going extreme streamline which could only turn out certain optimal cookie cutter builds. You don't obtain that you're effectively shunned.
I'm trying to not read or hear much about SL, which is harder than it seems, but i think i should read this article as that leveling isn't sounding like it's the way i thought it was going to be either.
I'm now leveling my 10th alt on my new server (started over from scratch not long back), and now only have 2 alts left which i wanted to save for SL, but maybe not, i'll just come into SL with 12 120's, errrr 12 - 50's lol, which i guess won't be so bad. 11 horde and an 1 alliance, although i have a huge mix of alliance on my old server, it's just once i went Horde i find it hard to play or get into alliance?
Personally i'm really hoping for some deeper rpg, which seems to be there (i hope) and if they want to untie power from covenant choice at the end of the day i'm sure i wont lose sleep over it.
Lately i get to certain point and i'm good and resort back to more relaxing play styles been through too much losing all you worked hard for to bother going any further.
Must have had 6 or 7 chances with my guild to do AOTC and nah, i did it on normal one toon and you guessed it "I'm good" lol. If i really thought i'd use that mount, then hell yeah i would have, i just like small unobtrusive mounts, and i don't need the bragging rights. I just found rolling a new toon far more enjoyable tbh lol

I think i enjoy leveling more than anything. I stay far away from pvp and have not made it to end game with any toon yet. I made a healer recently and got to level 78 i think, but it was getting stressful. Last thing i tried was forge of souls and couldn't do the last boss. Not sure who's fault it was, but the one rogue would hit the boss first then instantly lose like 2/3rds his life. I was like dude let the tank hit the boss first

I always return to casual leveling, seems to be my thing, go hard to the top and once i start to become only slightly more broken than i already am, i'm done, and only on the main(s). The only games i stayed on top becasue it was worth it at the time were EQ2 and SWL.
Just something about starting fresh with a new class in a familiar world.
I read about the new leveling and yeah i get the points, which i dunno doesn't really bother me, saving the alts i have left for SL. Only have a warrior and Death Knight left but i forgot about the Vulpera and other race options, so 6 at least sweet! There's also an entire fresh set of alliance i could do, already have years and years of alliance of all levels on another server that i could redo, but i dunno man once you go Horde, Alliance seems to be an extremely stale world to play in.

Sounds like the rogue was the problem, unless the tank was just taking a longtime to start the fight for no apparent reason. Either when I'm healing, I don't generally heal people who do that stuff because they'll never learn if you constantly catch them. For that reason, I also don't taunt or overagrro things off someone if they pulled when I'm tanking. I'll sure protect the other people in the group but the person who pulled, nah.
