Its not deep...
The community sucks...
The balance is off...
There is no endgame except raiding...
And yet I come back to it after 8 months, and had a big smile on my face for hours. For some reason this game is a blast.
I think it's the fast pace, other games are just slooooooow sloooow slooow, in WoW you can play hard.
Love the action in the mage class but the downtime SUCKS. You gotta be on your ass drinking water constantly.
My warrior can dive into battle and be fighting 5-6 opponents in a row with maybe 1 or 2 bandages, with my mage I spend more time drinking water than fighting.
As far as I am concerned, Warrior is the most perfectly done class in the game. Rogue is good too.
Hunter is too easy. My pet can almost solo everything by itself. Need more action, need more stuff to do.
If they cut down the downtime on the Mage it would be an awesome class.

I think you pretty much answered your own question in the first sentence. Super fun games are rarely deep - at least not inherently. It's the person playing the game that finds the depth.
WoW can provide fun experiences for people ranging from creative writers and artists who like imaginary worlds (just look t the fan art submissions), right down to the youngest, most immature players - ZOMG j00 gt PWNT! ROFFLZ! So really, Blizz has all the bases covered.
Also, Look at Ms. Pacman and Galaga. Those aren't deep games, but two of the most successful all-time.

want your game back?
One of the best elements of WoW and the main thing i hope others in the future try to copy is that it really doesnt have any downtime, comparing to almost any other game of this type downtime in WoW is extremely litle even for the mage, this is imo the key ingredient of why WOW is fun.
but fast pace easy games dont last long, and Blizzard is too slow with her developing, as usual.
Easy to use controls and simple movement for me.
Also,I'm currently in a guild that is only starting to do MC,like myself, and getting the epics. They progress as I progress, sort of. That keeps me in the PvE. The PvE Q system ensures there is plenty to do,so the level grind is not boring. You probably won't find a point where you have no quest to do,Blizzard nailed PvE spot-on.
The PvP is a sham though. On occasion in instance entrances (BRM,etc) or out questing/grinding,you may encounter the enemy. But most of time it's just ganking/outnumbering. But 99% of the time if you want PvP chaos, you have to join a BG. And the BG's all suck really as the main PvP of a game. And at end of day it's all about PvE-related grinding,it has NO PURPOSE! Blizzard really put people off outdoor PvP and raiding towns, and made people go their PvE-instance and BG way,or good luck finding PvP son.
Great PvE,shit-quantity of PvP. If you love PvE more, jump in now. If you want more PvP,go play another game.
Expansion failure of outdoor PvP will mean exodus.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."
