Lets get this right of the bat with an honest statement. I saw dark and light not too long before the "thing" known as SoG opened i say "Thing" becuase i dont know if it was a trial, a beta, a "mini game" or what. But what i can say is i genuinely disliked it. So now thats in the open, im going to make some points which should hopefully make this thread into an open ended debate rather than an outright arguement (odds of 2:1 that im proven wrong by post 6
)
Anyway, on the side of DnL failing, there are several valid points. The game has been pushed back, back, and back again. People will jump on this because theyve seen games get pushed back time and again on here, and they turn into vapourware, they fail and the saga ends. Theres the fact much of the Hype around DnL was building houses, having fun, and all these new ideas they were brining in which altough promised arent in the game. These were supposed to be done in november last year, but they pushed it to april to make sure we got "the full experiance" it got to april and they said may, its come to may and theyve said "only 70% complete". People dislike the game because many of them followed it for years, defended the company, and so forth, and now those people they supported have turned their backs on them and ignore their veiws. The Moderator situation is undefendable, you cant say "but the board mods are fans of the game, they dont represent farlan" because they DO, farlan chose them, and farlan let them do what they do.
On a better note, and a nice outlook, the Devs appear to still be struggling on regardless of outside conflict, which is a GOOD thing, it shows they are dedicated and want to work to get this game up to what it was originally going to be. I beleive the developers, the bug fixers and the "lower level" guys are the ones that are holding this company up, everything else in the upper-management is lacking, but the devs are struggling on.
A game known as Legend of Mir, had a phase like this, no updates for months, the publisher and Developing company had huge problems etc, and the game started failing, eventually player action meant that the publisher for Europe got their act together and their asses in gear, sorted their issues and updated the game returning it to its former glory (i still think it sucks though). So if another game can do it, maybe farlan can and "Game Network" (the publishing company from the example) have a decent record or destroying game titles with crazy ideas and problems paying royalites etc, so a company like farlan should be able to do it.
If the developers keep working the game will eventually get where it needs to be in terms of content and i think that can happen, and will happen. The issue however, is that the rest of their team need to get their act together and start doing their work. The game issues stopped being a problem a long time ago, and attitude problems are destroying this game more than anything else.
Ill close this point with a final question: Do you think its healthy for a game to generate this much hate about itself?
Comments
"the Devs appear to..."
"I believe the developers..."
There is nothing in that paragraph that can be supported by facts. It is all assumption and wishful thinking. If we use past performance as an indicator of future behavior a more logical assumption is that the latest "information on the current state of DnL" that Farlan is hyping, is less than 10% information, and more than 90% hype.
Anyway, there is really nothing to debate here. This will just come down to folks who talk about Farlan's well documented history of disreputable behavior on one side, and folks who use the words "appear to", "potential", and "hope" on the other side.
No it's not good for the hate. I don't know why anyone would get mad and spend so much time doing this especially a guy who used to work for them. Really odd. I don't think any of them will be here in six months so why worry about them?
Snow, I believe this has already been discussed, dissected and twisted enough already. It was pointed out all about this as well as if any dev had been affected. At the last statement I read, none had actually been affected and it was simply an elude to one of many possible reasons for the most recent disrespectful delay announced one day before release. I will not go into the specifics again, however you can find many threads/posts here that tell you of this sickness, who it affects, where its affecting , what it actually does, etc. Suffice it to say in areas of even the good old USA, in the poorer , rural areas, poverty stricken and lack of adequate medical attention/facilities/resources, many deaths occur over a seemingly simple sickness others just take for granted. There is government action there trying to help and has been for years. In these areas it is not unheard of that many die of a bad case of the flu (meaning really really bad cold) simply due to living conditions. That said, I can assure you the dev team does not live nor work in the devastated areas and it is not a well known condition within the metropolitan area. It was the fanbois that reared up and said the devs are sick, leave them alone, when in fact, it was merely an example of some of the things they could come up as a reason for yet another delay. Remember, they already threw out the hacker bit, the power bit (which btw - someone here on the boards themselves live in that area and posted that they knew nothing of the power outage at the range and term of that which was stated by Farlan) , the "we care about our fans" bit and an entire slew of other ambigious reasons for the sloppy and unprofessional manner in which this game has been handled so far.
Blaming whether or not the game is well received when and finally it is released on the sickness again is only deluding yourself and for that matter has no revelence on the 7yrs of production this game has been in to only release an incomplete, unstable and untested game and trying to convince an entire mmo community that low quality and adequate are the end all be all and should not be expected to be any better than it was 7rs ago. Lowering expectations and acceptance of the lowest standards is what Farlan/NP and the fans are trying to do.
Your comments to the post are irrevelent. THe point was .....the lowered expectations and lowered acceptance is what this wait and see is all about. Incomplete, untested and unstable is alll good to those that want so much for it to be otherwise. Unfortunately, for the ever growing and demanding mmo community, that just dont take the cake.
Well the fact developers and bug fxers are working can be proven by the fact the game hasnt entierly collapsed yet, so obviously somethings is holding it up. Theres obviosuly some progress, but the process is slow and poor.
Frankly i dont think this game has a chance, i reckon the game will come out, some people will trickle in, it will sturggle for a few weeks before game magazine reveiws tear it a new one, then eventually the next generation of MMORPG's which can deliver new features they promose will come out and shred DnL.
Quite likely. I think the reason DnL has been in the death throes for so long is because it has a relatively small development team (30 or something liek that) so some smoozing up to some bank or venture capitalist can pay for a longer amount of time than most games.
About the bug fixers, bug fixing is pointless without the before mentioned closed/open beta. Most of the bugs that are being fixed are the "Straight-path" bugs where developers plan out how something works, does it and fixes anything that doesn't happen properly. Players don't know exactly how developers planned it out so might do things differently which causes other bugs to show up
