I would say FFXI untill one of the more anticipated mmorpgs comes out. Horizons offers nothing that other mmorpgs haven't done better, but FFXI offers top notch adventuring. However if you enjoy building and crafting things, then go Horizons. Just be warned that the crafting in H will soon start to feel like busy work and you won't be able to craft anything that a billion other people are already crafting since adventuring is sort of dull in Horizons and most people opt not to do it. Either way both games will get rather borring after awhile since Horizons doesn't offer anything new, there is no PvP in either, and FFXI doesn't have any player made cities or anything like that to turn to once the thrill of killing is gone. So my suggestion would be FFXI untill one of the many really anticipated games comes out later this year like dark and light, lineage II, Dragon Empires, WoW, and more.
yes, i also have played both, and my advice is also to avoid both atm, so just go hide in a crawl space for a couple of months till a better MMORPG comes out. thats what im doing
I'll be the first to admit there are FAR better mmorpgs on the horizon (no pun intended) but for now Horizons is enough to keep me interested and kill time till those games get here.

I haven't played FFXI, but Horizons is fun to me, for now. It'd be great if all new MMORPGs had 7 day free trials, because only you can know if you're gonna like it or hate it. I have to say that the Horizons team is fixing problems pretty fast, better than SWG though.

i first got hooked on mmorpgs by eq so i like fast pased games and FFXI is kinda slow and well to me its boring. the game is group oriented and there are never groups also every group needs a whitemage (healer) and most whitemages are japanese so you end up with groups full of tanks i would say horizions is better
I've steered clear of FFXI because of the forced group play. While having friends in a guild is a lot of what makes MMOG's come alive, you shouldn't be forced into a box when it comes to play style, and Horizons does let you get ahead as a solo player. I play Horizons.
If at first you don't succeed, pay someone who will.
Personally Id tell you to stay the heck away from FFXI, it was a good game but being forced into a group really sucks because then that minimizes your experience and takes you forever to level up... and I mean FOREVER. and If you fight weaker stuff then you dont get as much experience from them either. The gameplay isnt all that great but they did have some good ideas with that classes and subclasses but you can never be what you really want with those and make it work because only some go together well... Good idea, good graphics, not the greatest gameplay... and getting around takes FOREVER!!!!
Calm down buddy. Don't ever drop the F bomb on this site. I know 10 year olds who visit mmorpg.com. Anyways everyone is entitled to their opion and everyone has different experiences. Just because you found great groups fast doesn't mean everyone else did.

This is a silly discussion really anyway, I've always hated the XXXX vs XXXXX in the mmog world, all games are different in some way, all players are different. What appeals to one person may not appeal to anyone else. I for one am a hardcore crafter, hate PvP and don't even adventure much, so what appeals to me DEFINITELY won't appeal to someone who loves PvP.

Just offhand I would say Horizons, but to better answer that question I think we'd really need to know more about what YOU'RE looking for in a game.

Pshaw...pre-pubescent punks are easily handled.
Yes, easily handled, just not worth my time to do so, and there are other prepubescent non-punks reading also who shouldn't have to read his nonsense.
