Long time mmo vet back after years, need game recommendations

Z3R01Z3R01 Member UncommonPosts: 2,426
I used to be really into mmorpg. Also really into this forum. However over the last 5-6 years not so much.
Well i have that mmorpg bug again but dont know where to start.

I'll play anything, grindy f2p asian mmos, subscription mmos, mmo lite, arpgs with town hubs etc. Dont care if a game is psw either. Just want something fun with a somewhat active community

Any help would be appreciated.

Playing: Nothing

Looking forward to: Nothing

I recommend ESO. It has an active community, good crafting system, amazing world, lots of options for either pve or pvp playstyles.

As much as I personally dislike the game, I've got to agree with @YashaX's choice of ESO.  It's one of the few major MMORPGs with a sizeable community AND active, on-going development.  Be prepared to shell out for DLC on a regular basis, though.  (And for basics, like storage.  I can't relate how I react to the frequent advice of "Just subscribe to get the crafting bag", at least not in polite company.)

(This game would rate a bit higher if it wasn't so dependent on level scaling anymore.)

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

    Look for https://www.blackdesertonline.com/hashashinawakening

Think they have a try for free...and they always have the game on sale different places for just a few bucks.

Not my cup of tea but a lot of people seemed to like it.

Next https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/ FFXIV people seem to like that as well.

Others have said ESO...think those 3 are the ones most people like nowadays, other than original classic WOW. https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/

That is about all that i can offer that i think may be worth the time. And think all of them have free trials in some form or fashion.

I agree with that assessment, but note that as a new player you will not be at any disadvantage if do not sub or buy dlc. If you like it and decide to play it long term (over a period of years), then yes at the least you will want to buy the expansions and dlc.

How can you recommend a game you don't like? ESO was terrible. The combat and animations are bad and you spend about 80% of your time running around aimlessly. The zones all feel the same. It's nothing like what a ES game should be. If they would have made it Skyrim Online it would have been the greatest game ever. Instead we got a poor man's WoW.

    Something abit different; VENDETTA ONLINE.

Recently went F2p, but until you hit high level there's nothing to buy anyway.

Has PvE, PvP and a fairly active community with Convoy runs, pirating and major Sunday Pvp battles.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

Imo ESO has one of the best combat systems among mmos. The active dodging, blocking, sprinting, and heavy/light attack mechanics give me a sense of freedom and control over my character rarely if ever felt in other mmos.

I agree with you that it doesn't play much like Skyrim, but I judge it against other mmos not against one of the greatest single player rpgs ever made. When I want the Skyrim experience I play Skyrim, when I want to play an awesome mmo I play ESO.

I suggest taking a look at the ones with community. Read about it, look at reviews, watch youtube vids, watch on twitch to determine what you will most likely be happy with.

    Popular games include:
    ESO
    Black desert online
    Gw2
    Archeage unchained
    WoW retail and classic
    SWG private servers
    Tera
    Phantasy star online 2
    EVE
    LOTRO
    DDO
    Neverwinter

Take a look at all those with your research and determine what you will most likely succeed with. Or you can put a list of your deal breakers and then people will tell you which mmos have what

I constantly recommend things I don't like because a recommendation is, in my opinion, not about me. It's about the person asking.

So if I don't like a thing but given their tastes I think they would like it I'd recommend it.

If PvP is your interest there's very little reason to sub to ESO. You do miss out on the Imperial City and for one year battlegrounds until they became base game also but Cyrodiil's RvR is the best PvP they have anyway and that's always been a base game thing,

I think ESO is probably a solid choice.  Unfortunately they have made it so much easier than it used to be.  The problem however is what really good choices are there at the moment.  All the current MMO's are on EZ mode.  Its a sad sad world out there for MMO's right now, maybe in 5+ years something will release that's decent again.

This is almost like trying to recommend a Summer movie during COVID.  Where are they at?

Well the only MMO I am currently playing is DDO and their community is like sitting in a very supportive chair made of broken glass.

WoW has a new expansion on Oct 27th. Massive game, huge community. This expansion will be bringing back some of the best villains over the past 16 years. Looks like the best expansions since Wotlk. Also it's easy to get caught up with a new leveling system.

If you like a good storyline swtor is a good choice too.
I got excited for SWTOR and within a week or play. I was loving the story again but the game has been made so easy. Any key press one shots anything you fight. There is no challenge anymore. Still lots of value. You can sub for one month and get all 5 expansions for that price. Unsub and play for free.

One development in your absence is the release of "classic" games, such as Classic WoW. You might want to give that a try just to see what it's like.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Avoid ArcheAge unless you enjoy disappointment and scams.
Project Gorgon has an interesting system and made by indy team with a lot of good (albeit small) community involvement.
If you left MMOs 5 years ago, you really haven't missed much however, just a lot of crowd funding flops.

They were not my first but way back all i ever played was EQ2 and SWG nothing else and loved it.

Fast forwrd my main 2 today are WoW r/c and SWG:L

I like sticking to 2 for amny reasons, i was never a fan back when there was a new mmorg every iother week, no going to say that wasn't fun, it was, but man what did anyone ever really accomplish.

Thanks for the responses! its cool seeing a couple people posting that were here even before Rift launched lol. I remember ya'll.

I downloaded FF14, PS02, TESO, GW2, BDO and Lotro. Maybe one will stick.

Kind of weird that the popular mmo lists you guys posts havent really changed much in the last 5-10 years...

Not so weird, the major development / publishers all stopped making new MMOs, especially MMORPGS.

We've got a number of try-hard Indies who seem locked in near endless development cycles due in part to a lack of stable funding combined with little accountability.

Might not be much different in 2025 either, but hope springs eternal.
