Longest and Shortest Time playing a mmorpg?

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630
For longest I count total time. So if you played a year, quit, then played another year beginning six months later,  that's two years. Betas and Alphas don't count.

For shortest I count post release.

So for me, longest is WoW. I estimate 2.9 years. Several rage quits in between.

For shortest, DDO. Maybe 15 minutes. Just got off on a really bad foot. I'm sure if I had been more patient I would have liked it more.

How about you?

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Shortest: Blade and Soul (10 minutes).  I made a super tall character and the camera couldn't deal with it so I uninstalled.

Longest: WOW - off and on since launch.  BfA is the only expansion I skipped entirely.

Shortest: A Tale in the Desert, couldn't figure out wtf to do and decided it wasn't worth trying.

    Longest: as of recent FFXI
    SWG Bloodfin vet
    Elder Jedi/Elder Bounty Hunter

Longest, EVE, 10 years with breaks here and there.  DAOC about the same but with longer breaks and counting time spent in several free shards.

Shortest? Well, the new modern record is..
    Star Citizen.... :D

Yup, downloaded it during the last free fly, logged in, stood my character up, looked around and logged for the night.

Event ended before I thought to login again, maybe next time.

Just can't seem to get myself motivated only to dink around with no progression or purpose....

I always try to give a game a fair try. Not right to just walk away from a game.

I try to at least give them a few hours of my time, just to see, because sometimes, it takes a few moments to really get into the game.

    With that said:

Archeage ... 4 ish hours, and this one drove me nuts, because all my friends told me how great it was, but.. I just could not get into this game, but I kept trying to go back.. and I just couldn't get into it.

    Longest:
On and Off, I would say, DDO. Been playing 12 ish years now.

Longest EVE at 10 years with some sanity breaks.
    Same here.

Shortest time played is at least half a dozen games where I stopped playing after around 30 to 40 minutes... Albion Online and Final Fantasy 14 immediately spring to mind but there are others.

Shortest Warhammer Online, about three months as I had to get back to what was my main MMO at that time. Longest Lotro, about seven years.

Longest: Either SWTOR or Guild Wars 1. Both clock in several years.

Shortest: ESO - several days. The gameplay just didn't click with me ; deeply beautiful game though. Unsure about GW 2, but it didn't last me long either. My foray into WoW was also quite short.

    Shortest: 30 minutes Atlantica 2

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Longest: WoW - 1 and a half years.
Shortest: Idk really. I tried numerous f2p games that I didn't stick with, but if I had to mention one famous, that'd be runescape. I lasted a couple hours and never went back. I don't like point and click movement and the combat was really boring to me.

Now all my friends are replaying it because they love the game, and I'm the only one not playing it xD

Longest is Everquest for like 3 years. Then shortest is Archeage I think which was 2 months but my wrist started aching was why I left. I actually liked the game but the repeating action while planting hurt my hand and I was worried that I might do some damage so I stopped.

Hang on do you mean continuously? If not then perhaps WoW. Because I have gone back many times and I am sure over time that has added to at least 5 years. I also played P99 for awhile so Everquest is probably up there at 5 too.

Longest: Vendetta Online: 17 years, consistently, without missing more than a couple months.  Still having a great time:

Shortest: I played this really bizarre, impressionistic MMOG called "Love" for about an hour.

    Longest - Everquest

mostly because it took so long to progress

    Shortest - Eve Online

discovered the games primarily a chat filter with space micromanaging.  I went on a delivery mission to and from a remote location.  I sat fir like 15 minutes staring at a screen of space.  Then returned.  Then I uninstalled.

Longest used to be Lineage 2, about 4.5 years. But at this point I guess it's Lord of the Rings online as I have played it on and off since one of the closed betas. So many years at this point.

Shortest was Shadowbane. logged in, couldn't figure out movement for some reason and it looked like crap so logged out. I'd say a few minutes.

Second shortest was Spellborn. Logged in, hated the tutorial and then got into the world and the one of the first things you are to do is running around to towers to collect some sort of list.

    Logged out. About 10 minutes?

Beautiful game but at that point I had had it with "running around" for something I don't care about.

Longest: EQ1 at over 17 years (total subscribed and F2P).
Longest subscription: EQ1 at around 10 years.
Longest continuous stretch: EQ1 at just over 4 years.
Longest single session: EQ1 Plane of Sky raid at 31 hours.

Shortest: AO, under a month.  I couldn't get past the awful graphics where I couldn't tell which way an NPC was facing.  Made sneaking into a guessing game.

Longest to my absolute surprise is WoW retail - WTF????? That can't be right, but it is.

I mean i went solid with EQ2 for 4 years straight, so that to me is the right answer, but then again been playing SWG long time too.

With wow i was there launch day, played maybe a month and went back to EQ2 for 4 years, then when soe decided EQ2 was a better dumpster fire then a solid mmorpg i returned to wow at end of BC, then rocked Wrath, and dropped out at cata after buying the expansion, and have bought every single expansion since and was always the same, played for a month then see you next expac, in there it was more about playing with my boys as well.

BFA was going to be the first expansion i completely skipped buying altogether, BUT lol, my son wanted to play, so bought it, played about a month and his friends joined him and i was glad that i could get back out again.

Then classic came, played that really hard, with my son too, and i dunno before classic i kinda set up this new life on an RP server, first time ever played horde, super fresh start, but in classic got into an amazing guild and they play both, and was playing both and with "new" coming to retail gave it more attention and yeah, totally back into wow. lol

Then SWG been playing that since launch but after it went down it wasn't until i went emu that i started playing it again.

So yeah wow retail is the longest, WOW! haha pun intended

Shortest, seriously would need to get back on this, played so many over the years.

My longest is probably a tie between WoW and Lineage 2. I remember looking at total time subbed on WoW and being close to 10 years subbed, and Lineage 2 I had played almost constantly from Chronicle 2 to slightly after F2P so around 8+ years on that.

Shortest was probably tied between multiple bad F2P anime games like Domo or Flyff, I think I gave them ~10 minutes of a shot.

Longest: GW2 at about 4000-ish hours.

Shortest - Allods Online at a few seconds. I was immediately turned off by the hideous, borderline unusable UI. Promptly uninstalled. And it takes a LOT for me to care about things like UI that I don't even tend to notice.

LotRO - About 4 1/2 years (launch through til swtor's release, with just a break for WAR)
SWTOR - About 15 months (launch through til just before first xpac)
WAR - About 9 months and climbing (6 months from launch, 2 months during lotd, 1 month on RoR)
SWG - About 9 months (pre-cu, stopped when i went to uni. dipped into swgemu a few times but not for any length of time)

Shortest, probably Auto Assault at about 4 hours. I didn't realise it was an mmo when I bought it - i thought it was a carmageddon type game! - but i gave it a try. it was ok for a while, but honestly I got stuck somewhere in the first area, literally couldn't figure out where the hell I was supposed to go.

There are plenty of other short goes whilst I've trialled other mmos like ESO, wildstar, FFXI and XIV. I usually try to give an mmo at least 15 hours of gametime before making a decision as it takes a while to really suss out all the mechanics and see what the devs are intending. For example, I'm all about depth in combat mechanics, but all mmos start out shallow. It takes a while for the depth to enter the gameplay, assuming it does at all, so i have to play for a while to get a good feel for where the game is heading, speak to existing players etc.

    Longest: WoW, ~9 years
    Shortest: GW2, ~ 2or3 weeks
There were some f2p games that came and went in less time than it takes to type this out, but as I paid to play GW2, it gets the nod.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

    Longest: EQ1 5 years
Anarchy Online since 2004 but I dont have to pay for that its free)

Shortest: FFXIV about 10 minutes (after a 2 day download)

EQ1 I lasted long because the community was good and had lots of friends. FFXIV was too restricitive for me and the last thing I wanted was a MMO on rails so I uninstalled.
