I was just curious. But speaking generally, how do you all feel about playable Orc race in fantasy MMOs? Are you against this sort of thing? If so, please share why.

I don't like current orc setting , they are always portraited as savage barbarian bandits , evil rap*st with main target is lewed elf or bikini human and being war maniac that decore they body with skulls .
I want a better lore and culture for the orc , and they meat loving vs leaf eater elf .
Why exactly would orcs as a playable race be a problem? How are they different that elves, cat-people, werewolves, vampires, etc? Weird topic to focus on given as no one has had a problem with orcs being a playable race.

Perhaps its because of the WotC announcement that they will make their DandD versions “more inclusive?”

Orcs are fine for character races for me. I guess it really boils down to the game's lore and how all races are handled.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

ESO has the best story and setting ever for Orcs I've ever seen in an MMO. There is an entire expansion dedicated to Orcs, it really gives a deeper than the surface level view and opinion of their culture.

I thought that was the Dark Elves? It is silly really, if we had real people who were green then they would be banging on about the Orcs. If people see white Elves as somehow symbolic of good look no further than Tolkien and what happened in the first Age.

Its actually Orcs, Drow and Vistani. I won’t go into how completely ridiculous I find all of it, that is another discussion altogether.

Hmm, I suppose then they'll have to remove "dark" elves from the canon, or at least rename them in some fashion.
NM, I forget, they are called Drow or something already.

In lineage 2 they were more like klingons. I thought that was a much better way of portray them.

I would like to see Orcs as positive (i.e. playable) race, not just "those evil monsters that crush anything around" stereotype.
First, there could be very warlike Orcish civilization with its history, legends, codes of war and/or honour. Their language. Even if we treat Orcs like in LOTR - there is still enough history to unfold, stories to be told. Why not see life through eyes of wise Orc?
So depends on how orcs are done as not all orcs are the same.
I feel the opposite. Warcraft (pre-WoW) orcs were a compelling twist in that they weren't inherently evil. And in fact, those under Thrall's influence looked downright saintly compared to the humans.

I like their origin story as well. They were a group of elves who were changed after their leader lost a war:
"In the middle of the Merethic Era, a group of Aldmer and their leader Trinimac attempted to halt the movement of the prophet Veloth and the Chimer. The Daedric PrinceBoethiah devoured Trinimac, corrupting his body and spirit, and he emerged from the remains of Trinimac as the Daedric Prince Malacath. As a result, his followers, later known as the Orsimer, or "Pariah Folk," were also changed, becoming Orcs"

I mainly played Ork in Eternal Crusade! Green Skin the Best!
Again, depends on the game.
Games like Warhammer, Oh hell yah! In fact playing Orks is an integral aspect of the game.
Games like EQ, or some such where Orks are mainly just savages an traditional NPC's.. Kinda meh.
Games like DDO, where half orc is a playable race, but Orc is not normally seen as one, then Halforc is what would fit in the game, and Orc is not.
Tolken-esque games, where they died in sunlight and wallowed in their own fecal matter... hard pass.

Orcs are not an issue as they are a common race. Now if you had said, what do you think about being able to play as a Mind Flayer or a Lich. That is something you don't see every day.
DDO has Tiefling, Tiefling Scoundrel, Aasimar, Aasimar Scourge, Half Orc, Half Elf, Wood Elf, High Elf, Drow, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome, Deep Gnome, Purple Dragon Knight, Dragonborn, Warforged and Bladeforged.
oh yah.. and humans too.
But yah.. I would love to able to play a mind flayer or somesuch.. gonna go suggest that on their forums, as the next playable race. I mean they already have mind flayers in the game itself, so.. making a character model should not be that hard, I mean really it's just a head on a human armature with some funky skin patterns when you think about it.

Warhammer 40k Orcs are my favourite fantasy race ever. They are the best version of the orc trope I've ever seen and I love them. I've got an army of them in my display case and I would play them whenever possible.
I mean, they're an asexual, intelligent fungus, bursting with muscles and enthusiasm, their positive energy is so powerful that it acts like magic!
So, I feel great about playable orcs.
That said, orcs are usually very poorly done in most fantasy games, usually just scabby / hunched humans with greyish skin and a few tusks. Not very inspiring. I dislike the twisted-elf origin story from Tolkien. Also, in recent years, even the 40k orcs have been given this awful comedic voice over treatment which annoys me.

You have got to play Eternal Crusade.

Is it still alive? Regardless, for all the wrong things EC has done, immersion was not one of them. They really pulled off 40k very nicely. Striking Scorpions were my thing, just lovely waiting around in all the impossible places!
Though I loved Orcs as well. And that leads me to the topic at hand. I have nothing against Orcs(or Elves or Dwarves etc), provided they're more than 2d or, failing that, just epic 1d fun like in Warhammer. Sure, I'm often drawn towards other fantasies, towards Knights and Witch Hunters and Elves etc, but I have nothing against Orcs, they're a very solid fallback fun method. Provided they don't get all WoW-y and fail, you know.

A bad joke carried out way futher than reasonable by a yahoo developer.
If they weren't green and orcish, it would be a cool design.

I felt one of the biggest weaknesses of LoTRO was not being able to play Orcs, Trolls, Ogres, etc. And no monster play doesn't count.
