Nor is it trolling, you see, the comment points up the dichotomy between the pre-SOE Vanguard lovers and the post-SOE Vanguard haters -- especially in regards to them "jumping ship" from Vanguard to the newly-vaunted Age of Conan, and the possibility that Funcom may or may not do something in the future that would suddenly sour the newly formed Fanbois -- and, yes, something like that could actually happen.
So my question stands: "What would you do?"
Wait ... no need to say ... if you are just like the other hyterical SOE-haters you would drop your newly beloved Age of Conan faster than a hot potato -- you know, just like you did to Vanguard.
So, do you catch the meaning now -- or is it too scary to contemplate? Well, is it, punk?

SOE is the best game distributor in the business. Period. This is not to say they make bad game design decisions on occasion. However, in terms of platforms, servers and support, no game can do better than to have Sony's support. That's a fact.
If ANY game distributed by Sony fails, it will be because of the game's inherit design and NOT because it is associated with Sony.

MS dumped vangaurd because it was underdelvolped. I cant see a huge company like MS dumping the "the future of MMOS" Why would they let such a good thing go? MS didnt let a good game go. They dumped a crappy game. And guess what SONY got its grubby little paws on it. SOE will take over the game sooner or later. The it will become part of the 699.99 Full game package along with SWG in its Xmas Pack for PS3. i could be wrong this aint a flame at all i just try to look at the obivious. I dont belive everything i read and Companys like mircosoft dont rule the world by letting good games go. I trust MS more then i trust SOE or Sigil. We will all see when the game comes out, just dont hold to much hope.
Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!
While it's fun to blame $OE for Vanguards potential demise, it will sink or swim on it's own merit. I think it's painfully obvious from what we've heard and seen from their e3 vids their behind schedule. Maybe there's a method to the madness and they can right a sinking ship, but I doubt it. zing!
i highly doubt MS would have dumped Vanguard, it has more going for it then most other mmorpgs out, and coming out. The WoW fanbois really need to start thinking and perverting statements.
There is one point that gets overlooked in the Sigil/SOE debate. If this was a single player game, it wouldn't make a damn who Sigil co-publishes with. You pay your $50 for a one shot deal and you like the game or you don't. But this is a mmorpg that touts, as one of its selling points, that you can play it for years. So let's say you buy into the PR of SOE's "limited role" and invest 400-600 hours of your time into Vanguard. Then whoops-a-daisy Sigil sells its interest to SOE, who, as they have done before, decide to re-do the essential nature of the game. That really sucks. Will it happen? No one can say, but you can be sure it is a lot more likely to happen now than it was before this deal. So you can't merely look at SOE's role as of today. You have to consider the impact of their role in the future after you sink months of your life into this game.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
I don't care if SOE has a good hardware infrastructure.. that's only one small part of the over all game experience. Its a plus, but its greatly outweighed by SOE's history of systematically revamping game play for the "better".
I put my Van purchase plans on hold well before the switch. When the "vision" of what Van was supposed to be and involve kept getting narrower and narrower, when features talked of in past no longer got mentioned and are ignored when brought up, when it became obivious that Van is going to be a moving campfest that revolves around gaining items first and foremost, when game play looks to be timesinked to max effect.. that's when I basically lost interest in Van.
I thought EQ was OK, but it wasn't that hot. The MMO genre has moved on a bit since then, and I like some of the improvements. I'd like to see more improvements. I thought Van was going to be a true forerunner in breaking the 3rd gen barrier. I don't think that any more.. Van will be a polished EQ clone, with just enough new to get people interest levels up.
I think Van has alot of potential, but I'm betting that potential won't be seen for 2 to 3 years after its release and several expansions they'll want 20 to 30 bucks each for.
Van going over to SOE just put the final NO WAY stamp on my plans of playing it. Instead of having that down the road potential; I see SOE pulling its typical and revamping if the numbers aren't very hot.. or revamping anyways to match their over model. As with many of my online gaming friends, I won't touch a SOE MMOG product ever again. Once bitten; twice shy - Thrice bitten, never again.
While I think AoC looks dang good, I'm still leery. Funcom had one of the worst MMOG launches I've ever seen. Now they've sold their soul to MS and AoC will be a Vista premier game. That makes my reservations even greater.
Doesn't matter how cool combat is, how many great features they have, how much eye candy a game has. How much content is there, is the game fun on a basic level, and is it consistantly playable by everyone all the time.. IS important.
What I will be kieeping a eye on is Fallen Earth and whatever Red5 Studios is brewing up. Call me crazy, but I don't think we'll see anything really inovative or new with any of the big houses currently out there. It'll be one of the newer, smaller companies that break the molds. WoW was the one exception to that, and I don't see anyone else pulling in that many new players again for a very long time.

Vanguard will be part of Launchpad, but it isn't going to be for the PS3.
Besides if the intention was to turn it into a "newbie game," then they could have done that whoever published the game. Moreover, they probably would've made more money selling out to MS as that would have alienated fewer potential customers. Therefore, the only logical reason for the SOE move is that Sigil has no intention of abandoning their game.

So basically:
Somehow Sigil got out of the contract (or was forced out) with MS. SOE buys the potential competition there by cornering one aspect of the market by profiting off the two games that were assumed to be in direct competition.
The only logical reason for SOE buying the game is because success or failure they benefit. Vanguard fails, they most likely will lose little due to most the weight on Sigil. Vanguard is an amazing success, they profit from what would have been their competition.

That would seem the most likely reason for SOE agreeing to the deal. Sigil has the chance to make the game they want and SOE has a win/win situation.

Yes, but you have to admit more people recognize the Sony name than any of ther others. I won't say best company, but most widely known is probably fairly accurate. Which does unfortunately have the benefit of getting customers to try a genre they wouldn't otherwise.

well here in NY im not seeing this ... i go to gamestop ... or even EB, few other game stores .. and SOE games are waay below on the bottom selves in the back of the store, where the older games are ( sharing shelf space with the likes of diablo, some out of date FPS games and stuff like the original CSI game ...)
not to mention sony is selling their games now 5 for $39.... on the contrary .. i see games like guildwars, WOW, city of heros/villains, heck even RF online .. all displayed on the wall shelves at the main part of the store with large posters advertising them ...multiple copies .. and then placed again on other shelves throughout the store ...and these sell as SINGLE games for $39-$49
whether or not this means anything in the corporate grand marketing scheme of things i dont know ....
but i know that people going to buy a game in the store never see let alone ponder to buy a SOE product/game

One mre thing is that Soe is part of sony. Sony makes PS3. Ps3 will be the biggest platform ever, Sony will make SOE part of PS# and relese all its MMO games on its PS3 for people to play. Im willing to bet that SWG wil be relesed with the platform. Vanguard will be and maybe even EQ. Then the 200k players that hate sony dont matters cus they will gain 40 million. In the End SOE dont need any of our money, They are gonna hope the perants buy the kid the PS3 for xmas, then pay the monthly fee on a credit card. once they pay it alot of people wont notice 14.99 a month.

This is arguably one of the worst aspects of SOE. The CSR's in galaxies are a running joke on the SWG forums. If they are handling the customer service for VSOH, heaven help them.
Sigil is responsable for customer service in Vanguard, not $OE. In-game G.M.'s to walk the land, dealing out justice to griefers everywhere, anti-cheater police type G.M.'s, and a in-game volunteer guide system as well.
Those that know, don't need to be told. Those that don't know, won't listen.
I've not really been an eager follower of Vanguard as it seems to be a more pve orientated endgame but i've been keeping a close eye on it as I can imagine that it will probably be a big hit. I thought I would give my two cents from a former SWG player and from my overall gaming experience.
Eventhough SOE don't have direct control over the production of this game, do you honestly think that they won't be influencing the development of it in any way? From a buisness point of view, this is a strange move by SOE to provide the servers etc but when you think about it, it starts to make perfect sense. It's obvious that sony want to use some of SOE's games to promote the ps3 online and to be fair, marketing some of the wider known mmorpgs to console gamers, has a lot of benefits. It's without a doubt that vanguard is going to be a HUGE release regardless of SOE being involved and i'm sure sony want to use this to their advantage in the console wars.
What does this mean? Well it means that this game will have to have appeal to console gamers too and generally speaking, you will find that console gamers would be put off by such things as vanguard. Whether the changes made for this are drastic, or minimum, it will in some form or another, effect this game. Now I know a lot of you are saying that SOE have no control over this game and tbh, nobody knows what is in the contract but think about it realistically, SOE own the servers and if you own the servers, you basically own the subscribers and i'm sure they could put quite a lot of pressure on Sigil once everything is running, to make the appropriate changes for the game to appeal to console gamers.
I could be totally wrong about this but far as i'm concerned, having SOE involved in any form, is a BAD thing for this game and i'm sure sometime or another, my point will be proven. I havn't read all of these pages of whiners/fanbois etc etc so i'm sure my thoughts have already been mentioned beforehand but nevermind.
I will add though that even as a former SWG player, i'm still interested in this game with or without SOE's involvement as i'm sure that the majority of people are but it's definately left me feeling slightly more negative towards vanguard so far.

It's true that SOE could flex their "muscles" to get their will done, but I believe that Sigil won't be doing a foolish deal with SOE and thus can always appeal on the deal should things require it. SOE "owns" the gamers, aye but as Brad already said SOE has MMO games and I don't see it neccessary for SOE to pressure Sigil as Vanguard brings SOE money and they won't have to waste their own resources in developing the game. I don't see a downside in the deal between Sigil and SOE. It does benefit both of them, Sigil gets to do what they like doing and SOE gets money. Well, who knows but as long as the deal between them remains true and SOE won't pressure Sigil too much it's all going to end up just fine...but only time will tell that.

It has already been said by Devs that Vanguard will not be released for the PS3. Thus there is no need to change the game play to appeal to console owners.
Perhaps after Brads split from SOE and the subsequent collapse of SWG and EQ2 they realized they let the one person who had a clue go? Maybe this is SOE's way of saying hey we screwed up letting you go and forcing our opinions down your throat. Come back and you can do things your way. Maybe...

Obviously you are not familiar with MS. VSOH was about their 4th or 5th foray into MMO's, none of the previous ever made it to lauch. You also have to understand how contracts work in the corporate world. From my understanding witht the information provided to this point, Sigil gained an opportunity to purchase back the rights from MS. I would bet my paycheck that this was built into the contract, I have written and designed enough to be pretty sure.
I imagine MS was pushing for a x-box 360 title and Sigil was pushing back, along with an extended release date, and possibly some other factors of failing to meet contractual keystones Sigil was given the opportunity to buy out MS. It could have well been failings on the MS side which enabled Sigil to exercise these rights. My company did this twice last year, and twice this year already.
Peronally I dont like the ways in which SOE has handled any of their projects, but this is no basis for picking up a game. SOE has 0 to do with the development of the game, and they arent even 100% publishers. SOE has very little imput at this point. There is no telling where this may go in the future. Personally I think SOE will get a larger portion of the game eventually, but not now or within the next three years most likely. By then you will have many more games to choose from.
I am sure there are many anti-MS people out there who are just as happy about this as you are angry. MS also hasnt completly droped the game, it is still an affiliate program which is more than ou can say for most games.

Yes, but you have to admit more people recognize the Sony name than any of ther others. I won't say best company, but most widely known is probably fairly accurate. Which does unfortunately have the benefit of getting customers to try a genre they wouldn't otherwise.
You can't miss what you don't know exists.
well here in NY im not seeing this ... i go to gamestop ... or even EB, few other game stores .. and SOE games are waay below on the bottom selves in the back of the store, where the older games are ( sharing shelf space with the likes of diablo, some out of date FPS games and stuff like the original CSI game ...)
not to mention sony is selling their games now 5 for $39.... on the contrary .. i see games like guildwars, WOW, city of heros/villains, heck even RF online .. all displayed on the wall shelves at the main part of the store with large posters advertising them ...multiple copies .. and then placed again on other shelves throughout the store ...and these sell as SINGLE games for $39-$49
whether or not this means anything in the corporate grand marketing scheme of things i dont know ....
but i know that people going to buy a game in the store never see let alone ponder to buy a SOE product/game

Perhaps after Brads split from SOE and the subsequent collapse of SWG and EQ2 they realized they let the one person who had a clue go? Maybe this is SOE's way of saying hey we screwed up letting you go and forcing our opinions down your throat. Come back and you can do things your way. Maybe...
Make a difference!
