Forget expansions I'm hard pressed to even care about actual releases.

The amount of been there done that, uninventive, dumbed down, copy pasta, design by cash shop, P2W crap we get these days not much even catches my eye.

That's if it even makes it past the is it actually an MMO test. On here you gotta check to make sure because it might just be 3 player co op or a team based shooter.

Depends on the quality of the expansion. EQ2 use to have amazing expansions that would really keep you engaged for a long, long time. Somewhere along the way Sony changed their strategy from making amazing game to trying to rob their players blind with every little monetization scheme they could think of. At one point they were making players pay retail for an expansion.. offering it as free to play then putting a pay wall up, putting in a digital amazon shop in their game to force you to pay more.. hell it got to the point where you weren't really playing a game anymore.. it was like just browsing Amazon looking for things to buy. Their expansions turned into basically little to no content and they would charge 50 bucks for it and then try to figure out how to charge you more money for the content that you just bought.

After going through that with them I just don't get excited for any expansion anymore.. and to be honest there has been very little to be excited about from a new release perspective too.

The expansion that i personally still fond of are WOTLK, that was the last time i ever lined up in person for an expansion, to get it's physical copy on it's first day of release so that i can rush home and install it and race to level 70 with a whole bunch of guildies so that we can do the raid fully as a guild asap.

That were the days, the adrenaline, nothing will ever beat the WOTLK experience again.

    So What Now?

Last time I got excited about WoW expansion was Cataclysm and then I was so disappointed I quit the game ever since. Deleted my characters and my account and never came back.

Hrrm... haven't played a MMO in almost four years now, nor am I terribly excited by those in development so my answer for expansions is no or N/A I suppose.

As mentioned previously, expansions rarely convinced me to go back and play a game I previously set aside, I'm more of a one and done gamer.

How can you not? I played Shadowlands last night and not only was I excited to do so, but the opening story in the Maw was the best WoW opener I have played. I cant wait to see more.

I find now, with less MMOs being launched, I drift between older MMOs as they get new content. Enjoying story as it comes out. I find I get less of a grind feel.

serious every time I read shadowlands I think of anarcy not WoW.

so no I don't care about expansions I don't even care for launches anymore I don't see why I would care about expansion who normally add little to the game, with a price of a new game

Price isn't really an issue for some people. Some people get excited for new storylines and game systems to play around with. To each their own though.

yes some people have more money then brains so that is nothing new, if people had more brains then maybe MMO wouldn't be so much in decline

$60 isn't a lot of money for what you're getting, but that's where "to each their own" comes in. If you value the questing experience; the hustle and bustle of people rushing to learn the new dungeons, raids, and game systems; and get at least 20 hours of game time out of it, you're already on par with what most games offer for $60. Not to mention, games have been $60 for a long time now as prices for other things continue to rise. I think it's a bargain for what I'm getting.

I don't think the genre is in a decline either. It didn't head in the direction I wanted it to when I first started playing MMO's in 2001, and we don't see AAA releases at the same frequency we did in the 2000's, but the decline has already happened at this point. Now I'd say the genre has bottomed out to the size it'll likely stay from here on out. Larger than when I consider MMO's to be in their best days (ie pre-WoW), but smaller than when WoW blew the market wide open for several years.

for a couple of hours of contend and a month of grind? yes it is, a waste of money, and not everyone live in the same country, think global not your small backyard

This is not directed at any one person, but, if you don't love and enjoy MMO's, what attraction does this site provide for you?

I mean for me.. I love MMO's, been playing them now going on two decades, and I still enjoy playing them, so I am here to talk about a hobby I love.

Much in the same lines in the Table Top Mini groups I am in, we talk about our love for the Hobby, anything from playing, painting, the lore, the whole bit, there is a love and a passion for the gaming platform, that moves us to talk about it

If someone said in our table top groups that they stopped playing Minatare Games, and think buying the models was a waste of time and that they hated new releases, I swear, it would stop the whole place and we would be like "Why are you even here?" and not in the "GTFO Bitch" attitude I see in MMO group, but in a more a earnest question, that if you are not having fun with this hobby, why are you pretending to be involved with it? (albeit this is really limited to the Minatare painting and molding groups I am in)

Yet.. somehow, when it comes to MMO's I see so many people talk about they don't play anymore, and have lost all spark and joy for the hobby, they don't look forward to updates, expansions, or even new releases, there is whole doom and gloom.. and I thinking.

    Well.. why aren't you excited?

On the other side of this, I mean this in the most sincere manner, if you really have lost all love for the hobby.. what are you looking to find here?

I could understand WOW fans being excited, blizzard puts some major $$, story, and polish into their expansions (not saying fans love them all).

Me, I'm cool with expansions, but usually more hopeful they'll save/prolong a dying MMO I'm playing (usually it's more of an adrenaline shot to playerbase).

I can't speak for others and mmos are still my favorite genre, but I still find myself on old game forums that are pretty inactive out of habit sometimes. Maybe it's that?

Plus, even the most ardent mmo fan has to admit that, on some level, they are 'chasing the dragon' of their early mmo experiences. I know that, in the back of my head, I am perpetually looking for that one mythical mmo that checks all the boxes every time I look at mmo news. Of course it doesn't exist and never will, but maybe others come hoping for something to rekindle the feelings they had when they did like the genre.

    Those are my best guesses

I feel ya, i've no words atm tbh on how i exactly feel about this new expansion.

Nothing negative that's for sure, it's just so different, yet familiar in the right ways, and not only visually, but the overall feel of it as well.

Only 6 hours in, so obviously not enough time, but i feel conflicted (in a good way) in that this does not feel like wow, or in that we've left wow behind here, so completely disconnected from the og that, hey...

That might be the conflict i'm having in that i kinda miss the old style, but overwhelmed with excitement for this new style, f man i dunno, just know, i have no complaints with the expansion so far, so wish i had the rest of the week off to binge the shit out of Shadowlands.

A fair question and one I've asked myself many times. Why do I bother coming here anymore? It's partly just a habit as Cuddleheart mentioned. I've been coming to this site for so long I just keep doing it even though I know it's pointless.

Also, there is that saying, "Hope springs eternal...bla bla bla."

Some part of me still hopes that maybe some day some developers will come to their senses and make a MMO the right way. Which, of course, is my way. I know it's not likely to happen but I can't help hoping.

Anyway, I don't post here very often anymore. My activity on this site has been on a long slow decline and I suppose one day I just won't feel like checking the site anymore and that'll be it.

Excluding WoW - other "normal" mmorpgs expansions work like this:

1st Expansion will have a good response - in some cases - it can boost the playerbase to about 80% of launch numbers (for a few weeks at least)

2nd Expansion will see a drop off - like less than half of 1st expansion

3rd expansion - even less - at this point it's all about just retaining the existing players

4th and beyond - the effect on trying to recapture the players who have left (or attract a completely new player) is almost non-existent - these expansions are pretty much solely done for existing players

So once a mmo playerbase starts to decline (for vast majority this is as soon as 3 weeks post launch) - there is no reversing the inevitable - one could make an argument that any work past the 1st expansion better be redirected to new game development.

This really is true in my experience. One thing that I enjoyed about playing indie mmos during the late 90s and early 2000s was the fact that the dev would often revamp the game and server completely every year. This led to almost what would be called seasons on crow fall or that new uo server. People could come back for the new build and make new experiences.

People did and probably would complain more today about the loss of progress. Ultimately it never mattered. Everyone got over it.

Contrast this with some of the same games that survive on maintenance where the few remaining players have everything- then get bored and leave and nobody wants to start playing because others are decades ahead.

Do I have to be playing any mmo's to get excited for a mmo expansion?

The best ever mmorpg just might be Steven Sharif's game and I am only seeing a possible 5 maybe 5.5/10,all the others are outdated or simply not good enough to barely make a 5/10.
Simple math,if your mmorpg does not have 50% of what a mmorpg should have then guess what, your game is not even a 5/10.Just get a reviewer to look at it though and instanmtly becomes a 7/10 w/o even looking at it and goes up from there,oh it has characters 8/10,oh it has a world 9/10,oh it has levels 10/10.

Put the game in the hardware review section and it's not only a 10 it's a golden award game !!.

I come back for every EQ2 expansion.
Some have been worth it, some not so much.
It is one of my favorites of all time so it is more a nostalgia thing I think.
    It feels warm and comfortable.

I know that feeling, every November, best mmorpg there ever was and ever will be, but for me only up to Rise of Kunark then left the game some time in The Shadow Odyssey, by that point the game was far too removed from what it once was. I htink i tried a come back, probably a couple times, i know Destiny of Velious was one of them and even that so many promises to flesh out the expac and yeah... another lie.
