I thought Pearl Abyss was already the Western publisher... I'm confused.

I'm pretty sure PA is the dev group. BDO was originally published by a different named company and then they merged or changed names or something to Kakao.

Pearl Abyss is the developer. Kakao is...or was, the publisher. Before that, Kakao went by Daum.

Damn this game pulls in that much huh.

I mean you usually only dump publishers and solo it if your game sucks or if you are making so much you see the skim off and go "oh hell no".

Luckily for them though they aren't pissing off their platform delivery systems like a certain other company that will remain named as Tencent err epic errr chinese mafia.

Yes like genshin impact the game pulled in a lot of cash. So much so that they bought EVE online and the staffed company behind it. They then used that company to self publish in other area's. They also had enough funds that same year to start the production of 4 other game titles.

They had to wait till the publishing contract expired or they would of taken over publishing for the states sooner. Kakao made a lot of claims at release that their version would be less pay to win then other regions. This put restrictions on what PA could put into that version of the game that. But with PA taking control of publishing they won't be held accountable for all of the promises Kakao made which is not a good thing,

On the up side Kakao will be publishing Elyon. So we can expect them to push harder to get the western version released as soon a possible.

Eh after 5 years of BDO i walked away for many reasons, the most prominent being Kakao (formerly Daum) - Broke every promise they made, and employ regional unfairness. While not maintaining their claims of avoiding P2Win microtransactions, they also did not bring in the QoL of options that other versions had, the end result is the worst parts of all versions. They for many years made claim of wanting a global version as well, and never delivered. They also were years late in releasing content to NA, or just never did it. They would also often release no mechanical structuring of core game play mechanics with little warning, promising to never do that again then immediately doing it again. They also intentionally mislead the player base at launch by intentionally omitting, or misleading tool tip, and game mechanic information to create tribal knowledge situations where only a select few actually new what certain mechanics were doing until a data mine forced transparency.

The ultimately end question is with each of these missteps, who was responsible, PA or Kakao? Without access to the international/strategic relationship between the two it's a guessing game. So one could surmise that these issues may become more rampant if PA was responsible. Either way i'll never go back to that scam of a game.
