Non-superhero MMO with bright PC energy beams?

SindyrSindyr Member UncommonPosts: 14

Which MMOs (currently out and playable) let you play a character who shoots powerful sun-bright energy beams without any guns or tools, as an innate power? Apart from the superhero trinity of CoH(V)/DCUO/Champions Online?

Thanks.

I'm thinking through all my MMOs ranged and casters specific abilities... there are some with similar, but not quite what you want... that I can think of off hand.

If I do think of one, it would probably be a single ability/spell... not a core class makeup.

More context?  What do you want?

Almost all fantasy MMORPGS I've played used lightning to represent energy based attacks.

Can't recall any with a power beam effect which does seem to have been introduced by the superhero genre going back to Superman's heat vision.

Usually games with priests or clerics run some kind of sun or light based attack like that. I know the guardian in gw2 has something like it, but most of their attacks are blue. I know the upcoming magic legends game has a character that does that. The sanctifier I think?  I recall warhammer used to have the warrior priest who had some attacks.. kinda like that?

I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Is this a MMO Sindyr has played and cannot remember, or does he fancy some "super like" powers in a non-supers MMO?

I agree with Twisted above, what's the context? What's your aim with it?

The sci-fi themed MMORPGs usually have a few of those, but with weapons, and you seek "without any guns or tools".

What qualifies as tool? Neverwinter's cleric has a healing light beam, but the beam starts from his/her holy symbol and not the hand.
LotRO's mini has an attack which looks like a vertical beam of light (sorta), and the rune-keeper has lightnings (uses runestones, but those are small enough).

Thing is, most games heavily prefer "guns and tools" as you say, for innate powers the superhero theme is your safest bet.

(TSW, while the bees weren't superheroes, have had a couple similar powers, within chaos and blood. Graphically they were bare handed since both the chaos focus and the blood magic grimoire were on the character's back.
I don't know if any of those animations have stayed in Legends though)

What about sci-fi setting? Warframe may have something similar on their mechs. Laser guns come to mind, too.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Superhero MMOs are my favorite, but as it so happens I have played CoH/V, Champions Online, and DCUO quite a lot, and I am not aware of any other superhero MMO currently available, so I would love to find a non-superhero MMO that give me the superhero feel. The Sith Lightning of SWTOR was pretty cool, but I played that game (and actually completed all character arcs on both sides.) Most of the fantasy MMOs use fire as the energy attack (or lightning) and I am not categorically opposed to those f/x, but usually the attacks seems anemic and not a big and showy as a like. GW2 for example has both fire and lightning but the base attacks seem wimpy looking to me.

Also, while I will be checking out upcoming MMOs when they come out, I'm really looking for something I can play *now*. I don't care if it's free, pay once, or even p2w, so long as I can feel like I am blasting with godlike powers right from the start. I tried Path of Exile but that didn't work out - they have a 10% exp death penalty at the higher levels!

I just want to play for fun, easy mode, casual, overpowered, whatever you want to call it. And I want the fun to start at the start of the levelling process, not the end. I never PvP or group, but I still prefer an MMO over a single player game.

City of Heroes/Villains has been and continues to be my favorite game, and I played it tons before it was shut down, and tons more after it came back up with the Homecoming servers. But I need to find a non-CoH game for a while. I just don't know if a single one of the other MMOs can compete with City when it comes to what it offers me. I just want to laugh maniacally while obliterating lots of baddies without breaking a sweat - and not just after I reach endgame.

It just seems like apart from City, that game doesn't exist. :(

I tried Warframe last week, but the movement was too action/twitch for me, with jump/run/crouch move combos and no tag targetting I didn't do well. (I play on a PC with keyboard and mouse.)

I played TSW before it went action/twitch, and had a lot of fun, although it certainly didn't give me the godlike vibe I am looking for now.

I am not ruling out scifi, though I would prefer my energy attacks be more nanotech based than gun.

Can't believe I didn't think about it, but yeah, Phantasy Star Online 2 has light attacks. Any technique based hero can use them but I think only Techer's boost their strength.

They have plenty of other techniques, that are essentially spells. Might be worth checking it out for a light based character.

Is a sword a tool? Lots of swords with light effects in EQ. Also spells with light effects and sparklies.

Sorry, I should have specified that I prefer to play ranged. But thanks.

Try neverwinter Nights from 2002. The caster classes of both clerics and mages have energy beam style magic spells and abilities. These can emanate from the caster's hands, items, or from the heavens like a satellite beam strike. Pretty awesome. NWN 2002 is still unbeaten in many categories.
