I've thought about writing this article for months. Since Thanksgiving and with Christmas just around the corner, I've been putting thought into the things that I've been thankful for.

It has been a year both strange and very familiar. We can't do many of the things we normally do but what we are left doing is quite familiar to us. Gaming can replace TV as the activity that brings families together, in an age where TV just does not do that like it used to, though maybe this year watching TV together had something of a revival?

Following from what you have said, I hope everyone on here is well and gets through to when we can return to some sort of normality.

A big heck yes to this article + DDO.

This game has soooo much replayable content and IMO the perfect speed for people like myself who are getting older. The theorycrafting race/class diversity can have you just sitting there 'thinking' about what you want to do for hours. Add past lives in the mix for those who want to experience harder content and IMO it is one of the best MMO's ever made.

It also helps a lot that they kept the game in a playable state so that new players can pick it up today and it actually works. The game has accumulated a lot of content over the years, and you can adjust difficulty to make it challenging or not, as you prefer. A lot of older games leave nearly all of their content in a broken state, or even remove it from the game entirely, so that if you're not already at the endgame, you pretty much can't start now.

Great article. DDO has saved me in 2020. I've been playing on-and-off for 10 years, but I played more in 2020 than any other year. It's still a wonderful game, with a wonderful online community to play with!

After the OP's success might I respectfully give a note of caution to that idea. I have only ever tried this with g/f's and soon learnt it was an horrendous idea. ;)

    Amazing story!

Cryo, it really is a gamble as Scot and rem says above, but imo worth a try.
Works better if wife is already playing something occasionally, and if not, these older games still can be a good place to start.

I digress, but maybe I'm just lucky with my picks... LotRO (and DDO as the example shows), really "new player friendly" games, just as AoC or CO.
Maybe STO as well, though it really puts new players on the fast track to reach the endgame quicker.

I find that more of an issue than the broken early content, as a matter of fact.
While good enough for newcomers, both SWTOR and Neverwinter after the added scaling are prone to this issue, they don't really give time to enjoy the leveling content due to the accelerated advancement.

Last time I played DDO was 2011. Glad to see it's still going strong. Unfortunately I'm the only one in my immediate family with a PC that can run games.

    Go for it.

My wife plays with me (sometimes), and we play DDO together.

This is my advice if you decide to go down that path.. play WITH her, do not play in a way where you are trying to teach her or cultivate her, let her learn the game in her own way, let her make her own mistakes and own victories.. in short,.. let her jump off the cliff to her death if she wants to see what happens.. after all, there is a goods chance you did the same thing once before, which is why you know she will die from it.. LOL.

I would say going so far as to start a new characters together, talk about what you plan to make and how you plan for them to work together, or in the case of DDO, TRing your main to run with her.

Worst case is.. you discover she is better at them than you are.. LOL.

Absolutely. I've only ever dated one woman who liked video games and I never played to teach or to run off and show what a "veteran" I was, etc.

I pretty much always followed her lead. If she died a lot, great. If an encounter was repeated multiple times, great!

It was always about spending time together and letting her just enjoy herself with something novel.

Nope.. Far from it, in fact it just put out a new expansion 3 months ago.

Sounds like a good approach. Hopefully did it without Sheldon-like comments :)
