Can't put a order to it (grew up poor):

- Hockey Stick and Skates (never played in a league, but played with my older brother and neighborhood friends on a frozen lake)

- Sega Genesis-  + first Madden Football and then got eventually Might and Magic at launch.

- Red Ryder BB gun... heck yes...

- Lunar RPG for Sega Genesis CD ROM... nobody saw me for 3 days (the 29th).

- Grasshopper Remote Control Car (super fast outdoor only)... a million parts you had to assemble.  Only bought through hobby stores.  Upgradeable.  My older brother had to help a lot with the assembly.  (Fyi, when I used it, it took out the antenna wavelengths on our TVs... piss off my parents).

My mother went all out one year and bought us the entire six million dollar man series of toys, and space 1999 (I think that was the same year)

Not sure why but that Christmas seemed very magical.

I share a similar experience as the OP.

I lost my dad very early in life so we were also struggling for money. So in the same sense that hockey stick and skates meant everything to me because i loved hockey.I played several leagues and yes the frozen ponds and friends were also a near everyday occurrence in the winter.

Truthfully your best gift should be knowing your friends and family are safe and healthy otherwise everyday can be stressful.

Yes, lost my dad early too.  We had to shovel the snow first to make the ring (then over and over).  Full checking, and I was the youngest.. by far... but angriest... respect.  Haha.

PS Fast forward to high school... I was a freshman with other kids of higher grades, we were in gym class playing indoor hockey...

Seniors from the football team were purposely being a-holes to the scrawny freshman... the basketball bleachers were partially out...

I purposely checked (checking isn't allowed) the biggest football player head over heels over the bleachers.  God it was awesome!!!  >:)

The Senior football players freaked out!!!  Really bad.

I immediately grabbed the goalie stick (and stayed in goal) the remainder of matches and time... and did not go into the the locker room.   :D

Castle Grayskull because it was badass. My friends could come over and we could play He-Man in and around the castle from the cartoons. Fantasy come to life.

On a side note, I see all these car commercials around Christmas with huge bows on the cars; Who the hell gets a new car for Christmas? So jealous!

Collected those as well, ever wonder why they all had identical muscles( the toys)... but couldn't beat He-Man(well in our imagination,  maybe they did)?  Props to the one than rotated faces (forget his name).

Fyi... a lot of them met their fate in my phase of illegal fireworks...m80s...  unfortunately  :(  what a waste.

So many destroyed toys (not just by me, but by others), but... I also kept many.

I can still recall the smell of all that Hong Kong plastic and paint. Much different from the rubbery smell of my GI Joes, because they had that rubber band in the middle; and the greasy metallic smell of Transformers due to all the moving parts. Nostalgia is strong in olfactory.

    Probably #1 on my list...

I'm not sure if it was Christmas, I was 3 when I got a full set of wooden blocks (think of the biggest cooler or chest you've seen filled with blocks) that my father made.  I played with them constantly till I was 11-12... because you could create forts for GI Joe's, Transformers, Army Men, M.U.S.C.L E.S & etc.. or just create cool architecture.

    1000s hrs on those.

Lincoln logs, legos (I loved), and others... not the same... if you have kids... get wooden blocks. But get the basics, so many rip offs when I googled just now (pm me).

The beauty is you could assemble massive structures fast, and clean up fast... not a million pieces or tedious work to have fun.  Win for kids, win for parents.

I got a Chopper bike one Christmas, I thought I was so cool, best present of my life. Looking back though the gear change was under the handle bars and it was so heavy it penalised you in a race with normal bikes. I must have been in my mid twenties when my mum told me she had given it away to neighbours, I actually felt annoyed, like there was a chance I would ride it again.  :)

When I was 16, my parents got me a drafting/art table.

That stayed with me till I lost it in a flood, 25ish years later.

My first "grown up bike" when I was 9. My parents almost spoiled it by giving it to me with training wheels but me and my friends took care of that within 24 hrs.

I lived on that bike from sunup to sundown for years.

Measles. 2nd grade. I came down the stairs Christmas morning and my brother-in-law noticed spots on my face

Really, I think it was the year my Dad bought (for the family mid 70's-ish) a Sears brand 4 in 1 video game console. It had Pong, Tennis, Hockey, and one other I can't recall :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

The best Christmas present that I can remember was when I was a little kid, back in the late 50's.
It was a toy cowboy that came with a horse he could sit on, but with some imagination I could imagine him walking as I played.
Separate gear that I could put on or not...
    - Saddle
    - bridle and reigns
    - saddle blanket
    - chaps
    - vest
    - hat
    - spurs
    - sidearm and a belt-holster to put on him and the sidearm in
    - rifle
    - a sheath to put the rifle in, and attach to the saddle

    I think that was it.

The hands were looped so they could hold things like the guns and the reigns.
Items had snapping clasps to fix them on where they went.

My imagination could run wild with this toy and I played with it all of the time.
I loved it. I named the cowboy "Bill." And the horse "Star."

Me and Bill got in some trouble sometimes, as cowboys had a want to do.
One day, my sister (a year younger) was playing with her doll next to me and Bill.
Now, my sister was always givin' me mouth, and started in again.
So Bill walked up to her doll with his trusty rifle, and shot her doll.
My sister went nuts! She went screaming into the kitchen where my mom was doing the dishes, screaming that I had shot her doll.
Mom looked at me angrily and ask why I did that.
I said "Mom, I didn't do that, Bill did."
She quickly turned around, stifling a laugh, her shoulders still shaking as she continued washing the dishes.

But one day the family was going somewhere, in a strange big city that I don't recall, going down a one way street in an obviously rough part of town.
The windows were down on a hot day, and Bill was playing on the window bottom.
    Bill slipped and fell out.
Dad wouldn't stop or try to go back because the one way streets were a nightmare and the traffic was fast moving and heavy.

    I lost Bill that day.
    And he was unarmed.
