Is it worth starting up a new character in daoc? I have not played in about 2 years and was thinking of coming back. One thing I didn't like was the travelling, always took forever, also I liked EQ graphics better, but perhaps that has all changed. Also, are there newbies still signing up?

Traveling is a lot easier. There are more horse routes, you can own horses, and you can teleport close to most locations you would want to go to.
There are still new players signing up. Certainly not in enough droves for people to see them all around, but new players still sign up. They most often go to Gareth server since it is the most populated. It also does not have the /level command so there will be a few more people below level 20 running around.
Leveling is so much quicker now. I am not sure what playing experience you want, but there are still new players and people start new characters. A lot has changed in 2 years, way too much to get into. So you might want to go look at some screen shots of the game and if you like it go pick up the Epic edition for $20 and give it a try.
Human Commando-Breakdown lvl 16
Lvl 7 Engineer (Kick arse Fun)
Auto Assault
World of Warcraft
Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Very much worth it, most newbies start on Gareth though.
Traveling has been changed big time, portals all around and if you are subscribed for 6 months you even get personal porter stones that port you from anywhere to your house or bindpoint.
GFX are equal or close to EQII, with catacombs and darkness rising expansions.

Please tell me you're joking, if not, you either have a couple of jam jars stuck infront of your eyes (and i actually mean jam jars, i'm not taking the piss out of anyone wearing glasses), or you're a complete and utter liar. My PC can just barely run EQ2 with the graphics set to minimum, but i can run DAoC on max with no problems at all.
Don't confuse textures with graphics, the game might look a little pretty, but to me it's more like a 50 year old woman with a facelift. It looks ok, but when you're moving the animations are still just as bad as they've ever been, and are not even on par with EQ2 at all!
I love the content of this game the RvR is amazing, but i've had to quit because of the poor animations. I've tried to get friends to join as it'd be a lot better with people i know playing, but as soon as they joined, they moved, jumped, then quit. I personally like to feel in-control of my character while playing games, but bad animations just won't allow it, and i really have tried to ignore it, twice, but i can't.
Sorry for rant, but seeing a great game with a lot less popularity than it should have due to little annoying -easy to correct- flaws, just irritates me. Obviously (and thankfully), Warhammer Online is going to be their updated version of DAoC.

There are many issues involved in how a game performs from textures, graphics engine, video cards, and how the game simply renders images. People are comparing WAR to WoW in terms of looks, but the fact is in terms of textures WAR has more textures than any other MMORPG on the market right now. I think that EQ2 looks better than Black and White 2, but I know that BW2 uses up a lot more resources than EQ2.
In any case, assuming that the overall graphic look of EQ2 is a 10, then DAOC would be an 8.
