As we inch closer to the ZeniMax purchase by Microsoft which was announced back in September 2020, new reports have indicated exactly how Microsoft plans on doing so. In documents on the European Commission's website cite the new subsidiary as part of Microsoft's approach to complete the $7.5bn acquisition of ZeniMax.

Yeahhhh.... so according to you, Microsoft bought Zenimax for 7.5 billion, only to shut down the entire department, close its 8 studios and fire its 2300 employees... cuz they won't be profitable in 1-2 years?

Yeah man, I don't see that happening.

Sounds like something the accountants and tax lawyers dream up to benefit from some arcane legal loopholes... /yawn.

LLC's lol the legal way to operate under very sketchy terms.Eliminate all risk and invest just enough to make the books look good.
I am sure Microsoft has a very good team of advisors with taxes and legal documents that will make the best decisions with this new LLC on how to invest into their new business.

This will allow Microbleep to take some serious risk because if all else fails like bankruptcy, they can take their money out first and recoup a lot of the losses. It doesn't matter anyway,Microsoft makes so much money this will be like playing with government tax money anyhow.
Why do yo uthink Trump never pays taxes and why AMazon never paid any federal income tax,all these busienss loopholes are setup to help the rich whiel the small struggling, hard working businessman struggles to make ends meat and pays loads of taxes.
Of course many a small business are scammers as well, putting everyone and their gold fish on the payroll.

They're being purchased by the least hands on overlord possible.

And honestly any corporation that keeps sea of thieves going has to have the biggest kid gloves around.

It literally took years for them to move playstation version of minecraft to bedrock. Creating a new division? What microsoft division has ever released a game for playstation? So basically I see this as awful news for anyone not in the MS ecosystem who's a fallout fan.

This is strange behavior though because after they bought Mojang(Minecraft) they changed the studio name slightly, the OG devs left and they haven't really done anything big in years. Why buy a studio and not maximize their potential like Tencent does? It's almost like MS buy the studios just to buy them and making money isn't really the purpose.. What if there was another buyer in line to buy Zenimax and MS outbid them?

What happened to Elder Scrolls Blades? I'm sure a mobile p2w looter with the ES name would make money and the visuals looked nice from the screenshots.

What are you talking about. Do you know who Zenimax is? How big they are and the IP's they own? lol!
  • alakramalakram Member UncommonPosts: 2,301
We really don't know what is Microsoft planing to do. I hope they just let Zenimax continue making games but the truth is, once you are owned by another company you cam't decide for yourself. As of now Zenimax has been doing a good job with their IPs, but we don't know what Microsoft will tell them to do, it could be better or it could be worse, only time will tell.

Well, its too early to tell what Microsoft's plans for Zenimax properties and studios. I mean, legally... they prolly aren't even able to comment on that until the acquisition goes through.

However, I'm not sure Mojang is a good indication. (or it may be, we'll see?) I think a better gauge would be to look at the studios Microsoft acquired in 2017-2019. From all accounts, it seems studios like Ninja Theory, inXile, Obsidian, etc are definitely benefiting from having a larger bank account to draw from. (Obsidian's upcoming Avowed sounds like its gonna be very ambitious for them... not to mention inXile is working on multiple AAA projects using Unreal Engine 5, etc. etc.)

So yeah, as someone else pointed out... if it came down to Sony, Tencent, 2K, Nintendo or Microsoft acquiring Zenimax... my vote would always prolly be Microsoft. I think the other major corporations would wall off all their IPs to a detrimental result. (atleast for us PC players)

I could easily be wrong but I think Microsoft is positioning themselves for multiple advantages for the long-game.

With the recent passing of Zenimax Media founder i think it all became clear now. He probably knew his time was coming and sold right on time. That would answer the question why a company as big as them got sold so easily.

Isn't Minecraft still very popular? Without knowing any details, I believe that acquisition was a very good return on investment for Microsoft.

Interesting. We'll see what this changes at the game level, if anything.

Probably will be a year or three before gamers can really assess the impacts from this merger.

What if they don't, what would that really mean I wonder.

Would it really stop the deal? I'm thinking this is more of a formality or courtesy to keep those officials thinking what they say matters.

    It would stop the deal.

In this case it's likely more of a formality because Microsoft - Zenimax deal is unlikely to run afoul of any antitrust laws, but if it did run afoul of the laws and the officials would not give their permission then the deal would not happen.

The EU is always going on about multinationals and taxes, if Microsoft where prepared to sign up to say seven years of EU "tax funding" I am sure they would see their way to rubber stamping the deal. ;)

I'm not sure why that poster is implying Minecraft has been abandoned to maintenance mode. It has seen some big updates and improvements over the last couple of years. The IP has a little ARPG on the Xbox/Win10 platform. Minecraft has gone on to the Switch. The game and IP has seen a lot of activity since the Microsoft acquisition.

No idea IF or HOW MUCH Microsoft benefits monetarily or otherwise from the acquisition of Mojang/Minecraft. I will say that the game still is fun to play with my son. I especially enjoy the community servers on xbox playing hide-and-seek. Agree there have been updates and continue to do so.
