On our journeys around Valheim's world, we've encountered scary beasts, such as the wretched Draugr in the swamp, or the Goblin-like Furlings in the Plains. But nothing could have prepared my group of Vikings for what is becoming Valheim's deadliest denizen: the Deathsquito.

You should have seen them before they nerfed them.

But 120 health and bronze is really not enough for plains. Do mountains first, then plains.

Yea. this was more a "we stumbled upon this biome, what's this?" type thing that turned into a graveyard nightmare.

We were ahead of our time here, exploring too greedily and have awakened a nameless fear.

Similar situation happend to me and the other person I'm playing with. Explored too far =)

They are very much a glass cannon though. But if it's night/foggy out they can be hard to detect, especially given their agro distance including - as you've pointed out - over the water. Our tombstone recovery efforts were further thwarted by sea serpents. Took a few tries of harvesting/rebuilding ships.Main base was a good ways away - raft was not even an option.

We ended up having to search other routes, because one way back was through the swamp and hard to navigate..plenty of leech agro etc. The other route was easier to navigate but had more time in the 'ocean' which meant more chance of sea serpent agro. Unfortunately, to avoid the sea serpents in the final stretch we had to get close to shore, which was plains biome. Had to keep a sharp eye for skeeters and weave back and forth from ocean to shore.

At one point I had two tombstones due to death skeeters and there was one of those giant buffalo looking beasts camping the tombstones =(

Frustrating at times, but the challenge is worth it. The game forces you to think about what you are doing. Sometimes it requires patience until the situation is more in your favor (wait it out in fort at night until morning burns fog off for better visibility etc.). EDIT: I've heard that the Furlings are endgame mobs. I try to keep my distance until they path away, then I follow their trail of destruction picking up all the loot from the mobs they have slain.

oh they do that? interesting. will try it out soon. i saw some structure in plaines environment. it looked like an armored "tower" with some green guys running around. i was able to pull one when i shot him with an arrow. i killed him, but it took some time. he was wielding a sword and a shield. dont remember his name. but i know two of them would take me down like nothing. and he dropped a black metal scrap.
pity they dont drop swords / shields i could use. same for skeletons in the dark forest. they fight with the sword, but dont drop it :-/

at low level, the best way of obtaining that "core" something for a smelter is running burial chambers in the dark forest. correct? i was trying to get to the swamps to get it from some fiery creatures. but it seems that swamps are gonna be too dangerous for me.

Yeah the Swamp was tough enough at our current progress level but the Plains were death. When I died it was a long, long way back to my tombstone. I tried taking a Raft back but the storms and wind were not cooperating so I ended up running all the way back to the plains which took forever and poor @Torval was left guarding the area until I could make it back
Not sure how I would have been able to do it without him.
The game seems to get easier at times and then boom! Overwhelmed all at once.
Such a great time and some of the best gaming I have had in a long while!

They need to stop nerfing stuff. The game is already too easy. If this is your first survival game I'm sorry but nerfing to appease the normies isn't the way to make a great game.

I'm being told that soloing is possible in this game, but it sounds more like a group game to me!

Possible. Sure.. but I don’t think it would be nearly as fun.

It was mainly single player during the beta, and like an earlier poster said they nerfed alot of stuff since EA release so sp should be alot easier now.

I've sailed pretty far and wide in our world. I've seen more plains than anything. I can't even count the number of times I've died to these devil-bugs. We have some shorelines that are littered with old gravestones and rafts.

But, it's been worth it. Getting around these assholes and to the Lox is pretty important for exploring mountains without a lot of frustration. The needles they drop make really nice arrows as well.

Sausages, cooked Lox meat, glowing mushrooms, a silver shield and sword/mace are the way to go about killing these damn things.

Actually you dont need lox to get to mountains, before EA release the lox cape didnt give a frost resistance buff. You had to get silver breastplate silver pants and and silver/wolf cape to get the buff. And in order to do that you had to make frost potions til you found hidden silver veins.

So if plains is a pains just make some frost potions to use til you get some silver and a couple of wolf heads and make the silver/wolf cape as all that is needed now is just the cape- wolf or lox.

On the subject of deathsquitos used to be able to approach them in sneak from behind hold block and after they hit shield get a hit in for a kill. Now they did something because its harder to get a hit in on them after they hit shield, they fly off too fast then come back. Now you can try to get lucky and go for a hit without trying to block at all with right timing or shoot them from a distance with cheap arrows.

Yes sneak around black forest and look for skeletons guarding mounds.

I put 30 hours into the game solo before playing with someone else.
I found the game amazing even alone.
Even now @Torval, @Lahnmir and I are all on different time zones but the game is just so fun even alone and an absolute blast with friend(s)
Seriously for $20 USD it is beyond worth it.

The game is amazing on your own, it does add a great deal when I am out in the wild and find abandoned structures made by @Torval or @blueturtle13 though.

For the rest however I am, for now, playing solo. While the other two are out exploring I am mostly building and have just started a beach house after my first housing experiment. It comes with a pier so I can have a raft/boat nearby. It also has a large amount of storage and a huge oven to prepare meals. I did however upgrade a workbench to T3 so I can start exploring in the near future.

I kinda went from loving the game to quitting(at least for now). It was all fun and good times up till I needed to find the tombs in the swamp. 3 swamps later, still haven't found one.
Then 3 draugh archers killed me on my boat, and destroyed it. Hours and hours trying to recover that corpse, I have to acknowledge it is not possible.
No way to land and build a spawn point in that swamp, and it is sourrounded by deadmosquito plains (impossible to build a temp spawn point there as well), approaching the swamp from the sea makes the leeches come out and they will destroy your boat because they don't leash (they will follow your boat forever).

Ok, frustrating as hell but I guess I could go back and farm for 3 days to craft new gear except ... resources don't respawn .. I lost more or less all my skillpoints to corpse runs.
So, even getting back up from that situation, I don't see why it should not keep happening again and again. You are cold you are wet, and so many things have the potential to one shot you after dark forest. Even mundane things can easily kill you because getting stuck on the landscape.
Also.. You are cold you are wet.

The problem seem to me that mob damage scales, mob speed scales, but your hp or general survivability does not scale.

As some people here already mentioned the plains are the endgame (T5) zone in Valheim (for now).

The games natural order of progression is Meadows->Black Forest->Swamp->Mountains->Plains so Deathsquitos are meant to be handled by players with Mountains equipment.
I don't want to spoil what equipment that is but I can assure you that with a fully upgraded T4 armor the Deathsquitos are actually well balanced and do about 12-20 damage unblocked and can be fully blocked with a T4 shield.

A quick tip: shields, as someone here already mentioned are actually very strong and important in this game and when you block right before an enemy hits you, you can stagger the enemy and your next few hits will be criticals. As for the deathsquitos, you need a shield with about 80 blockvalue to fully block a hit of one of those nasty bugs.

Good luck and have fun exploring this gem of a game! <3

They do 10-20 damage regardless of your armor tier, so I don't see what that t4 should do. Actually does armor even do anything? I have not noticed any effect (not saying there isn't an effect, just nothing I have observed).
Only thing that seem to improve survivability is so far more damage and practising timing and blocking.
