SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF THE FIELD COMMANDER “SERVING GAMERS ABROAD” MILITARY PROMOTION

SOE-Sponsored Contest Shows Recognition, Appreciation for Hard Working Military Gamers Stationed Abroad

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – May 19, 2006 – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, today announced that it has chosen five winners for its Field Commander™ “Serving Gamers Abroad” contest. SOE wanted to show its appreciation for the men and women of the Armed Forces on active duty overseas by giving away gaming prize packages they can share with their friends and families back home.

Entrants were asked to submit a short essay that details their or their nominee’s current role in the Armed Forces, their gaming habits, and how being away from their family and friends has made it harder to maintain their gaming habits. The winners will receive a prize pack from SOE, including two games (Field Commander and Untold Legends™ The Warrior’s Code™) that are playable across the internet, allowing family members to game together despite the distances between them.

“Being stationed overseas, far away from loved ones, is a situation that the majority of us can’t even come close to relating to, but can certainly empathize with,” said Laura Naviaux, Senior Brand Manager, Sony Online Entertainment. “Knowing that many of those serving overseas in our military are avid gamers, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to feel like they were at home playing games with their family and friends.”

The winners of the “Serving Gamers Stationed Abroad” contest are:

  • MSGT David Langdon, stationed in Iraq, nominated by Shannon Langdon on behalf of her husband
  • SGT Eric Frock, Task Force Pacific Vigilance

A more appropriate title for this promotion would have been "Serving U.S. Citizen Gamers Abroad" ^^

Bravo to SOE for doing their part to make life in the service a little more enjoyable!

Since this article will get some exposure among gamers in the service, allow me to add that Horizons has been offering a free account to active duty members of the US military since last year. Details can be found here:

Regardless of your politics or your feelings towards any game or game company, the men and women in the armed forces of every nation are subject to long periods away from home and family. It would be nice to see more game companies coming up with offers like this.
