BioWare today officially announced that their upcoming refresh of Anthem, also called Anthem Next, was ceasing. Development resources are being funneled to BioWare's other projects, including the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles, as well as helping out with updates to their MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

I'm disappointed. This game has so much potential.

A word of caution, if you want a game to come to light, dont have the word NEXT in the title.

Wow so all they are doing is rehashing old titles.
Well we can see WHY most dev studios have been doing this, with such poor game designs they can't sell new IP's.

The answer is to simply make better games and not reskinning old games which creates a lazy studio and does nothing to give us better gaming.

They totally showed their noobishness at building looter shooters. They couldn't even get the basics of what's attractive about those games right: 1. well thought out and useful loot; 2. constant meaningful upgrading options through said loot and 3. build depth and diversity.

I tried to get into it several times when it went "free" on EA Origin and just couldn't do it. Who knew you could make an Ironman clone boring?

Um...Both Mass Effect and Dragon Age games are sequels/new games to their predecessors, that's not rehashing the same thing, it's continuing two much loved IP's that their fans and employees are passionate about. In fact, a huge chunk of fans have been very bitter about Anthem being the reason why DA4, ME5, and SW:TOR expansions got heavily sidelined and set back years. Not to mention the profoundly negative impact we've read that it had on their employees on those projects.

As for SW:TOR, it makes them a lot of money, so yeah that does not surprise me. SW:TOR is a far more profitable use of their live service resources than Anthem is, so beefing up that team makes a lot of sense. They've got new IP's in development already, so you will see entirely new titles in the future from BioWare, but the Anthem team is not that big, so it makes sense to send them to the titles they're farther a long in development with than they are with their new IP's.

I think we all knew this was going to happen. If they were not planning to do it they wouldn't have had a "meeting" to decide its fate.

Can't say im surprised at all, EA and Bioware simply aren't capable of making this sort of game with any level of quality.

Honestly, I'm disappointed because the combat and visual customization were top notch.

Oh well. I hope this will mean that the next DA and ME are good.

Has Bioware done anything that has garnered good press since Mass Effect 2?

Fully expected, but still very disappointed. Anthem was a very damaged, if beautiful game that played alright. It had the potential to get salvaged. But we are talking about EA, the bean counters with next to no cojones. When was the last time they pulled a No Man's Sky or Heavensward? Never I think. Could be wrong.

What's wrong with continuing a series?

Final Fantasy did this 14 times, which is supposedly your favorite game, lol...

While I agree with you about continuing a series, Wizardy doesn't really like 14 that much. It's 11 (I think that's the other MMORPG) that he holds up as the pinnacle of a MMORPG. At least in its earlier incarnations.

Not surprised at all. They rushed the game out (likely due to EA needing to meet numbers) and you don't really get a second chance with a large publisher like that behind you, especially if it's taking time.

Massive hit against Bioware, they released a half-finished piece of shit because they couldn't get their development pipeline in order. This is on them. EA killing it, I expected. If Bioware couldn't get it right the first time, why should they get an influx of cash to finish the piece of shit.

Fuck Bioware. Fuck EA too, but a little less in this case.

Not sure it is the same they released a lot of good stuff before it shutdown, and well NC, nuff said.  I for one will not play any of their future releases.

It's a shame. The original Anthem had so much potential. I enjoyed the combat and most of its mechanics, and the world I thought was interesting. I liked the open world parts and thought they were amazing (though unfinished and unpolished). Sadly the focus of the game was entirely on the timed instanced group missions, with little else to do outside of them. I tried playing the game a couple of times since launch, but sadly without a group the game was pretty much unplayable for me, even with its mission match making, due to the low playerbase.

Truly disappointed here. Flying and combat were a lot of fun. Sure they had issues to sort out: loot etc. but there were some solid basics. Note to self - the hype train is BS.

They were never able to get this game to come together properly. I guess it was the right decision in the end since releasing and then shutting it down in a year would have been a bad thing.

Words to live by for sure. But,  Anthem spent about seven years in development with only around 18 months in full production. The infamous E3 2017 demo bears little resemblance to the final game, and at the time it was shown, barely even a single mission had been implemented. I've been wondering for the past few years if  Bioware would be better off if they were to move their studios outside of Canada.
