Unsurprising. Valheim is a very engaging game. Congrats on their success.
With
the funds this level of success provides I hope they'll focus on
polishing some of the rougher systems and mechanics of the game.
It shows what a team with a focused goal can accomplish.
Talking about a goal, I am moving north on our map in an hour or two. Got a raft and crossed the first river. Small base established and will be exploring later on. Onwards and upwards!

It is just huge resource waste....'

Surely this is a fluke right? Nope because the STEAM ratings are still overwhelmingly positive. As it's been pointed out several times, that a small 5 man team over a period of less than 3 years have created a game that has rivaled even AAA games such as Destiny 2 and GTA 5 on the Steam charts.
The question remains though, how much did it cost to make Valheim, because the premise for multiplayer is there, albeit in need of some optimizing, could put crowdfunded MMOs in a tight spot when it comes to what could be perceived as a viable time table for producing a game.
While SC is of course at the pinnacle of being what could be the most elaborate and massive Sci-Fi game ever made, they've had upwards of 500 people, $300+ million and almost a decade in development.
The same goes for a lot of other crowdfunded games with much smaller scopes. Even with just a team of 20 people which is what most crowdfunded games boast these days, even after several years of development, they are still sitting in Alpha or Pre Alpha. So what's the hangup?
I honestly don't know because Valheim has proven the current time table to be all wrong.
I still find cute some people belive SC will deliver
I don't usually spend a lot of time in survival games because for casual gaming it's difficult for me to keep up in the world but this game has been fun playing with some friends on our own server. The only issue is having to go through various steps to sign into my friends server because the game itself won't list it.
Steam did NOTHING to develop or market the game and will get 1 million of those 4 mil.
This dude couldn't give the game away 3 years ago so i am sure he will be one of the few devs that claims Steam deserves it.
Even if he loses another 50% of the 60 mil he still gets a free ride on the money train.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

It's not really a free ride though is it since they actually had to make the game. We all know it's a crap shoot for indie games to take off so to say they are getting a free ride is kind of saying the people working on this game do not deserve their success which is not true IMO and kinda of harsh on your part.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I would argue that it being on steam and it appearing in various lists is marketing and making players aware of its existence.
They don't have to "do" anything because, for the most part, it's an automated system as far as I can see. That's the whole idea of making an online marketplace.
With probably thousands of games of all shapes and sizes, it's too much to have everything lovingly hand-picked and coddled for the customers' tastes.
If they don't like it then don't put it on their platform. They could have reached out to Good Old Games or maybe Epic if they wanted to see if they would carry the game.
On a smaller scale, if I bring in a guitar to the nearest music store and sell it on consignment, they don't "do" anything either. They just make room for it and if someone wants to buy it they get a cut and I get the rest.
I don't go complaining that they didn't "do" anything.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
It just marketing tactic as the best in this game, 4 millions/ 400k concurrent with 300k-350k active.
They rather raise it to 10million to break the best game of the world made even better in sales.

Craft some bronze nails. Won't say more, but it opens some things up. If you want, there is bronze down at the Craft Shack next Boar Home
Well, my mission failed. Not because I died but because I got distracted.... Started rebuilding my new shore house, then got some beehives in, making a spike filled fishing pond later tonight if possible next to the house and I want it expanded as well. Ahh well, exploring can wait, might even tame a boar or two, I haven’t tried that yet.

The magic of well programmed procedural world generation
But hang on, we know you need to have a separate team to make new worlds with their own studio and everything. That's even when you already have good procedural world generation. You are not making a proper MMO unless you splash the cash every which way you can.
This game is something. The devs must be totally surprised and amazed by its success. I wish the games I'm following (CU/CF/DU/etc.) would get a comparable successful launch.

Who knows what will change before launch but so far, having tried all 3... none is close to being as fun as Valheim.

Adding to that they were a 3 man team til the later part of last year.

Surely it is a fluke. Nobody, including the developers, planned for or anticipated this degree of success for Valheim, yet it happened.
The only thing this proves, or rather reminds us of, is that mass popularity is as unpredictable as it is powerful.

And that the old ways still work, beta keys were awarded randomly, couldnt be bought and it didnt matter how long you had been on the list

Right now just loving Finewood bow + fire arrows and bronze axe combo. Couldn't get into the polearm even though I usually like such weapons.
