Well if you go by their own record they will milk the game for what they can get and shut it down. In the last few months I have seen so many ads on social media for this game in particular. Funny how they timed the massive ad campaign with cutting devs. You don't cut teams on games you are still working on that have been out for 10 years. I really doubt the team was that big to begin with at this point. It is normal to pair down teams when a game has first launched as you need more people to do things. Cutting devs at this point is almost always a bad sign for a game.
When you look at companies like Gamigo, Aeria, etc it really paints a picture of worry about MMOs as a whole. EQ/EQ2, Lotro/DDO, FF11 and WoW start to look like anomalies rather than solid rules for the survivability of MMOs going into the future.
FF14 is getting pretty close to the same age as Rift. Will SE manage to keep it alive to a 20+ year anniversary while still receiving meaningful updates? Who knows.

The more years that pass, the more I think that those anomalies were the dawn, the pinnacle, and the denouement of the MMORPG genre. Nothing that came later really surpassed them, and it is looking more likely that nothing will in my lifetime. All the developers are too interested in recreating the past rather than taking the most interesting concept in gaming to a new level.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Pretty much. Pantheon looks promising enough if it could ever release, but it might not manage the same following that even early Rift or Vanguard were able to obtain.
On the other side of the Devs being interested only in recreating the past, you also have company leads that are only chasing a quick profit. Grand Fantasia and Twin Saga are both pretty much the same game, reskinned ever so slightly. Archeage largely relies on people continuing to use the cash shop (And subscribing w/ Unchained) to stay ahead of their competition. Most of the other heavy PvP titles like BDO and BnS relied on these tactics, too.
There is plenty of talent out there, and enough resources to fund them if a company was really interested in creating the next groundbreaking MMO. But with both sides of the seesaw loaded how they are, neither side is going to want to come into the middle to make it work.
I'm sorry, but bullshit. They haven't done ANYTHING for the game in years, now they drop the dev staff and say they'll continue to work on the game? They didn't work on the game WITH a dev staff.

Compare what RIft was at the time it was acquired and what FFXIV is now and your concerns will likely vanish. The difference between those two states is vast.
WoW still has a huge player base, and that of FFXIV is large. The remainder of the games you mention and numerous others you didn't still have their ardent fans.
Let me tell you, that the guys who sold Trion back in 2018 were the smartest men alive...in their city.
They knew very well that their games portfolio sucks and that is a matter of time until they will go bankrupting.
While I don't like Gamigo at all, is not their fault that the Trion Games they purchased sucks. Rift will close soon, because the costs to run it and develop it are pretty high and they don't earn too much with it.
Oh well.
Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy? Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!
There is small but significant difference in the reporting of Gamigo's statement against what was actually said.
The report says: On the future of RIFT itself, Gamigo's spokesperson said in the statement that there will be "relevant updates in the future, we will announce them in due time."
What Gamigo actually says: "If there will be relevant updates in the future, we will announce them in due time."
You missed out the "If" which although only one word, says a lot.
I didn't know Rift was still alive. I stopped playing years ago and thought it died off along time ago. I enjoyed it back in it's youth, but didn't like the direction it was heading and when it went F2P, that was the nail in the coffin for me.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
Rift was like every other game the past 15 years hype train then dead. The problem mmorpg's have had is the devs want as much revenue as possible so they cross the line of being in reality a single player game but want the mmo revenue.
How long a lifespan does a single player game really have,1 year tops?
Survival games can offer more of a rpg experience with a smaller team and less overhead and w/o cash shops. So mmorpg's devs need to wake up,you don't NEED to create 2500 boring quests to cater to a solo crowd,These larger studios need to look at survival games and do it better because they SHOULD be able to do it better than these 2-10 man studios.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Wasn't it always F2P? I remember playing it for free early in its launch. It wasn't a good enough game to pay a sub for.

I always think back to Kano when anyone brings up Trion. Pretty sure he worked for them or was a dev himself. Was interesting that he closed his account about the time Trion shuttered it's door per say. I know there was some drama going on here with someone and him when he deleted his account. I do miss reading his responses sometimes though.

As I remember the actual "split" was much earlier than that, somewhere around ArcheAge he started to bash Trion a lot... but yep, had some really good threads and infos.
I have been playing Rift for years, and plan to continue playing as long as I can. Rift is a great game and the dimensions/housing is awesome.
But saying that, I do believe gamigo will shut it down in 1-2 years.

It's a real shame and immensely frustrating, as the core of the game is pretty good. I played at launch when it was a sub model, together with many wow refugees, I still recall the great times we all had. Now? Well I think enough has been said about it's depressing ownership. Good luck to those still playing, my heart hopes for a change of fortunes, my head prepares for the worst.
At this point any game company Gamigo gets their hands on should be immediately tagged and the players should leave as soon as possible. This way they won't be able to make money like this. Nasty company.

guess 2021 is the last year of the game

Noting apocalyptic is happening here.
