In today's Bethesda Joins Xbox Roundtable, ZeniMax Online Studios Studio Director Matt Firor mentioned just how big their MMORPG, The Elder Scrolls Online, has become. Firor states that in 2020 alone the MMORPG added 3 million "new residents" to the online world of Tamriel, with accounts totaling over 18 million over the 7 year life of ESO.

That's great and all, but what are the concurrent users? Would love to know which MMO is winning that battle.

It will be interesting to see what MS does with ESO along with the IP itself.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it's not WoW any longer, after two trash expansions in a row and rumored significant sub drops over the past 6 months.

If you don't think that WoW still has the most subs by a very significant margin you are delusional. Concurrent users doesn't mean much if they aren't paying a sub. Obviously a game can have more players playing at once then WoW, but if only a small fraction of them is paying, WoW still wins.

What it shows is there is not a heck of alot of fantasy MMORPGs out there that are viable...It's basically ESO, FFXIV, GW2, or WoW.......All 4 can probably boast 18 million or more accounts.

It is all about the cash flow every month. Glad to see there is some success for this game.,

They had a pretty big sale at one point which is how they snagged me.  I didn't play a ton though but that was just a matter of bad timing.

Fake ass numbers... most of these come from their trial accounts that they count as active players just to show investors...

My guess is that it still is WOW although I don't think FFXIV and ESO are far behind in concurrency. There are highs and lows for all 3 of them though when something significant happens.

ESO just had a complete overhaul of the champion point system which is a rather big change so I'm sure that's creating a mini surge at the moment.

I dunno but I actually got put into a login queue last night. It was only 30 seconds but still I did a double-take. I figured they either need to put some more effort into their mega-server or popularity is seeing a surge.

Anecdotally supporting this is that the delves and some areas I went into in the last couple of days have been packed with people farming mobs and the delve boss. It was like a mini-zergball rolling through the delve and mob area. This was in Greenshade.

They just did a major revision of the CP system, and players have two weeks of free respecs to play around with it. So, there will be a player surge for a bit.

It's not inherently bad, but there's just a huge uncanny valley to this game. Be it the kinda fake, animation cancel combat or the story which tries to be serious(while not being instanced = someone tries to immerse you while idiots bunnyhop in thd background)...there is a good game in here somewhere.

Average of 20-30k people online tops for ESO. The "millions" are just PR. Its f2p and millions will have tried it. But 90%+ never stays.

ESO is not f2p, and since you didn't get that right I don't have much confidence in the accuracy of the remainder of your post.

    .... just to show investors...
They're a private company not publicly traded. Or at least they were until MS bought them. Who are these "investors" who need things shown to them?

Everybody that plays ESO on other than the free access weekends has to put some money into the game. At the very least they must buy the base game and every expansion they wish to have access to.

On top of that, many subscribe for DLC access and the unlimited crafting material storage that only subscription brings. Those that choose not to subscribe must purchase ongoing access to the DLCs they favour, each separately.

There are no totally free rides in ESO.

WoW certainly has more subs though, due to their still large player base and the necessity of maintaining one to play outside the sub-20 content.

I wanted to pop in with "inb4 AnImAtIoN cAnCeLiNg RaPeD mY dElIcAtE sEnSiBiLiTiEs!" For shame, I was too late.

Other than EVE and pre-2002 MMOs, what are MMO's that don't have any form of animation canceling? Every game that I've ever seen get praised for "Good combat" has animation canceling. The only difference is that most of the KR shit games have some after image to denote an animation has been canceled.

This is on Playstation Now and Game Pass too. They did an amazing job turning this around. I had such a bad time at PC launch, so I was pleasantly surprised how much fun I had when I grabbed it for cheap on console a few years ago. It's my favorite console MMO by a mile.

If you think WoW is doing well, you're delusional. If you don't think there are games raking in far more cash and active users, you're stupid--and there's no fixing that.

But you go on and whiteknight WoW, child.

Blizzard seems to be doing well enough to keep cranking out WoW and working on Diablo IV, while maintaining whatever else they have on the go. I'm sure they are well insulated from any immediate threat of demise.

While WoW is seeing a SHARP decline in active users and subs. Some metrics are pointing to the current sub population being lower than BFA at this moment.

Does it have the most -subs-? Well, of course. It's a sub-only game. Is it the most populated or active MMO, or the one raking in the most cash? I kinda have my doubts. We'll never know for certain since WoW now hides its abysmal numbers and has since, what, WOD?

Still, anyone who thinks WoW is the breakaway "king" of MMOs at this point, based on "sub numbers", is forgetting its one of two big MMOs that even require a sub, and FFXIV, as much as I hate that game, is probably very close to WoW's numbers these days.

Shadowlands is a bad, bad expansion. It's on par "bad" with BFA and WOD. Likely, with the current dev and leadership lineup, WoW isn't going to see another decent expansion and its playerbase will continue to dwindle as fewer and fewer former players return to sub for a patch or new expac. Two rotten expansions in a row can absolutely kill even the biggest of games.

Then again, a lot of us did say that the only thing that could kill WoW was WoW itself.

I came back to WoW for Shadowlands and left before the month was out. That is the earliest I have left one of WoW's expansions. I was finished with all the storylines and found that now I would just redo them all with the same character. The first time around was bad enough.

ESO on the other hand has held me for months with each new chapter. I still have quests to go back to. I have 5 max level characters and still enjoy the game.
