Based on what metric? I mean 340K isn't a huge sum in the MMo world, it is also nothing to sneeze at, especially if the Developer is as far along as stated. Not saying here nor there on that, but it is certainly far from DoA, unless of course, you present some evidence of this I cannot find.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
So because Chronicles of Elyria promised a bunch of things, that guaranteed that they would be able to deliver them? What are those lawsuits about, again?
There's only one way to prove to people that things in your game actually work the way you claim, and that's by letting people play it. There's an enormous difference between a video that could easily hide game-breaking bugs and a playable demo that has a lot of things demonstrably working even if a lot of features are placeholders or completely missing. The number of years that have passed since development started proves nothing.
If you want to argue that there's not a huge difference between a kickstarter and pre-orders, then fine. I'm generally against the latter, too, as far too often, people don't get what they hoped for, even if established studios usually do eventually deliver something.
You're just describing the general premise of ...well.. purchasing anything.
Just because Cyberpunk 2077 promised it would run on First Gen PS4, that would mean they would be able to deliver?
Just because Marvel's Avengers said that you'll be able to play together with friends, with a never ending end-game, and that we'll have characters released in relatively quick succession, AND since they released a demo, that it somehow invalidates that they basically failed at launch in every facet of the game aside from the story?
Just because a mechanic says he can fix your cars air conditioner, that means it's a guarantee?
You're not really making a good case, because many of these other developers have publishers or investors to do so, STILL took players money, and ended up in relatively the same state.
Cyberpunk has lawsuits, far more damaging than COE at this point (because COE restarted development so they can skirt those lawsuits). And the point of lawsuits invalidates that there isn't any recourse to Kickstarter campaigns.
So essentially, there really isn't much, if any, difference in the quality of games you can obtain from a kickstarter or from a studio upon launch.
Again, I backed OS. I was happy with that, and I believe in Larian.
I too, believe in Paratrope. In 5 months or less, I anticipate getting hands on impressions with the game.
I'd rather invest in an idea I believe in when I can instead of hoping a publisher will one day get around to it.

There's an enormous difference between buying something that other people have already bought and played and can tell you what it's like versus buying something that you don't know anything about other than vendor promises.
Good for them, quite a few YouTube video’s out there to see what is going on with the game. Just registered for pre alpha, already have alpha acces to the PC and console client when time comes.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
