The only thing that sucks about it is the end game community. It took all the worst neckbeards from WoW and gave them everything they wanted - ammunition to use against people who aren't at other's skill level.
Parses are the bane of all casual players, and FF14 is rampant with it.
My recommendation: Play the game for the story, and everything around the story ( including the story-difficulty trials ), but avoid Savage Raiding like the plague if you value keeping a high opinion of the FF14 community. I can't stress enough how bad it is - and people actually DEFEND the toxicity on the subreddit and forums. It's nuts to me.

What you are talking about is more in line with Square copying Blizzard's item level idea.It ALIENATES players and gaits content BOTH of which are terrible ideas.
The WORLD might be nice, better than most fo the rest but the GAME,nope and it is because characters/combat design is inferior to FFXI a game made 20 years ago. There is Yoshi standing there taking tons of credit and he can't figure out how to improve on a 20 year old game.
All that Yoshi dude is riding the coattails of success, well and pissing me off.I wanted so badly for 14 to be THE GAME i would play until i die.I was so disappointed i can't say it in words.Unless they get rid of Ilevels and OPEN up the community and game i will NEVER come back to the game.
You see even within FFXI end game was a serious problem and content gaited to end game communities.Who the hell wants to grind the same instances over and over to get the gear to advance to the next tier,NOT this guy.
Point being no matter what enjoyment you might get out of the game, the end result is painful and turns me off.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

ive casually played this game off and on forever, but dropped due to subscription model just not what i want out of the game. wish it was f2p i would play it a lot more often.
tldr the upper arguments, parsing? dont know about that, you can casually do a lot of content, but the community is really bad about being antisocial . every server in every town, zone, its just no community, no dialogs, just no zone chats, even in cities. The only thing in ffxiv you see get advertised is people trying to sell runs.
if you want a better MMO, check out ESO, way better community and ecosystem which stops the gold sellers/ encourages guilds to do stuff together

I hear ya though, I take breaks from the game when I have less time to play due to the sub.
Most MMOs people are silent these days, though my server in FFXIV it gets pretty chatty in Lominsa in the evening. Plus we have the Jades as centerpiece. xD
I feel like not enough people in the world truly knows the magic within this game.
Also i am a bit sad Balmung and Gilgamesh split up when they created the new Crystal datacenter, so i am waiting on the data-center visiting system said to launch in Endwalker.
Then i can pop in on Balmung players RP'ing again just like in the good-old days! xD

I've played FF14. I really really wanted to be into it. But my god the people I've met in raids and dungeons are just plain awful. I get it, healers are supposed to do damage and I DO damage, but I'm not gonna be as high as most dps and when you have DPS losing their minds and needing targeted healing my dps is gonna suffer. Never again man, I'd rather do raid finder on WOW than try to play with the end game community on FF14.
With an uplifting article like that I have to be uplifting right? But that's rarely me, so back to my quizzical self.
I see nothing wrong with gated content, raids and the whole caboodle that goes with that. individuals and guilds vary but you just need to get with the right bunch of players and you will be fine. Of course if you are a "casual" raiding is not for you, though that rather depends what you mean by that word. If you come on for 15 minutes a day you can't expect to do raids.
This dichotomy of play styles, dedicated or casual causes as many problems as PvE or PvP and being a grouping or solo player. I find most casual players don't like to group, be in a guild, do anything difficult or for that matter communicate with any other players in a MMO. To me they are the bane of MMOs.
But that does not mean I think they should not be in the game, because I hold out the forlorn hope that maybe, just maybe they will realise there can be so much more to the game than what they are doing now. And I know from some guild members that's what happened to them, so sometimes they do!
So to me if you give casuals something else to do in end game like say dailies all that does is help keep them in their solo/casual bubble. However the leap needed to go raiding is a big one and they could do with some gentle first steps. You can have the likes of a "3 avatar raid" its not really a raid, just a short "mission" where you need to get three people and takes no more than an hour. They have this sort of thing in Lotro. The other end to this is encouraging interdependency in players say for crafting, housing, trading. Once players realise how usual other players are they can start thinking, wouldn't they be useful in a group?
When they fix the Housing issue I'll think about playing, its really no better than Archages land grab.. So frustrating hearing about all the great housing the game has and never being able to experience it..
Story playthrogh was fun, but endgame loop wan't my cup a tea. Had similiar experience with SW:ToR. Both fine games at firsts, but it gets old real fast.
If I own the game on ps4, but never paid for subscription, and I only played less than an hour or so, will I be able to continue with free trial? My character is like around level 4, I think.
I just made it to the final Expansion. It took me 3-4 months. This game is great! And the crafting it self is like a whole new game. Cant belive that I ignored this game for so long!
Perhaps if I could do that with my existing account and characters I would give it another go, but I believe my prior subscription time prevents me from doing so.

I also consider this to be a great game and I can compare it favorably to just about every other MMORPG out there because I've played the great majority of them at one time or another. I especially recommend it to anyone who is new to this kind of game because it does an awesome job of teaching them how to play their role in a party environment. Other games teach you how to play your character, but I know of no other game that teaches you how to do that within a party. So I say again, if you're looking for something to keep you entertained for a good long while then give the game a try. At worst you won't like it; at best you'll fall in love with it as I did.
FFXIV is a great game with an over all great community minus some end game elitism. The crafting is great, battle content is fun, housing is good once you get one lol(By the way anyone can get an apartment for 500k where you can do anything that can be done in a house besides company stuff) and there is much side activities. If you hate linear gear grind or story that you must do to move forward you may dislike it. Some one said above that you have to love FF to like the game. I know a lot of people that never played one of the numbered series that play the crap out of FFXIV. Anecdotal evidence to be sure but the person above did not provide any either.
I'm not a FF fan, and I enjoy it. I also gotta say, it has the best music score of any MMO.
there level 60 free to try model is flawed. i wanna bring friends in to try the game but they refuse to pay for the game. now me on the other hand have sunk quite a bit of money in the game and while i really don't have an issue with it but say i wanna level an alt class, just because ive paid in the past iam not allowed to play under the level 60 for free. i have to sub again. this kind of rubs me the wrong way that those that have paid ant even catch a break to level alts all while the leech's can get full access to the game till 60. like i sad heavily flawed model.

Maybe they have a thing for potatoes in short skirts and this triggers them. To each their own I guess lol.
