I'm not sure why so many are pointing at Valheim. Its a fun game when you have a few fellow gamer mates to play with. However server limit is 10 players and you do NOT want to play with some real randoms as they can pretty much screw over your game. Also all servers are password protected so unless you bring 9 other mates who have the game into your server you really won't get to 10. This is NOT an MMORPG but simply an online survival RPG that has a co-op mode for up to 10.
Valheim is also a big part about building, if your not a base building freak the game will run empty very short as its still early access and missing much.
As far as actual MMORPG's the sad truth is nothing new or good in years. Everything that has tried has been a total joke and generally a quick money grab to a trash game. A few claimed AAA titles have popped up but are trash mobile P2W games that did a pc port and are very empty of real players or any community.
if you need to remember @constantinemerus, he had a contest 2 yrs back about putting some group together and why it would work. It was kind of fun actually. I won like $10 bucks or so.

I think the success of Valheim speaks to the lack of diversity in gameplay styles we now have. We have a lot of MMOs built the same way, a lot of survival games built the same way, Valheim is somewhat different among a lot of the same and quite polished for an EA. But I would not play until launch myself.
