Let's face it: Life is hard. Sometimes we need that place we all can just relax and unwind from real life. Some of us find that piece of zen in books, art, or music. However, gaming has often been touted by many as a way to simply unplug from the stress of real life an unwind for a bit.

I do my dailies in GW2 and SWTOR it's fun. I play on my xbox more and more now since I'm on Xubuntu Linux now and the proton steam works-ish.

    Grinding is relaxing and unwinding.

    So um, yeah.

In terms of activities within an MMO, Auction House market playing and price manipulation... can stand still and just buy, sell, hoarde stuff with doing very little effort.  Make tons of gold because of market inefficiencies (aka player lack of knowledge and supply & demand dynamics).

Back in the day, when I used to actively play FFXI, I'd either power-level some random groups in the field or grind for mats/mining/fishing for crafting in between HNM times/scheduled events. Made me feel part of the world.

Earning currency and seeing how much I can get per week, month etc through various ways possibly discovering something I didn't know before in the process..

Sending out my wingmen on dispatch missions to mine asteroids and/or hunt space pirates for credits, usually lasting up to 8 hours, while I do other stuff. Checking in once awhile with my corporation members to defend the dispatch against any would-be player raiders.

Doing dailies to earn that bit of galactic points and stuff (though it only requires minimally 10 mins of my time per day).

Weekly challenges consisting of manual mining expeditions, salvaging abandoned outposts and pirate wreckages, exploring wormholes for loot, industrial development/production, faction missions, etc.

Producing ships and gears from blueprints to auction for more galactic points.

These are some of the activities that help me unwind. Makes me feel like I'm an occasional space pilot/merchant in another world.

But no its not eve online or echoes, its second galaxy.

I am not sure a interactive entertainment is where you should go to unwind, watch the TV instead. But sure, you may choose to do something less taxing. The reason I have beef with this is it smacks somewhat of casual play which always ends up with the insistence that play becomes ever more casual.

Back during vanilla WoW I had a spot on the beach in Azshara I would go just to chill and do nothing, for hours at a time, while I sat in Vent (yes, Vent lol) chatting with friends and guildies.

    Alas, Cataclysm took that away...

That's the sort of wind down I understand, you were not doing anything gameplay wise.

Interacting with the logout button and playing a single player JRPG instead is a great way to unwind.  ;)

I'm currently playing Persona 5 Strikers and I love the hell out of it.

(Serious answer though, I like rolling alts, exploring, experimenting with builds, and playing cosmetic dress up).

The blasting rocks while cooking dinner comment....that's one I don't quite understand, because you really aren't doing anything with the game. Are you finding cooking dinner relaxing?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept, but I'm not sure AFK gaming is relaxing, because you are almost not involved with the game, you are actually doing/enjoying something else. That's just me though, I realize a ton of people do it, but I've never enjoyed trying to multi-box, or AFK game, which is probably why I've never been able to immerse myself with games like BDO or Eve, as much as I wish I could enjoy them. For me, (and I realize that's just me, not everyone) I want to be immersed and engaged with a game, having it on because I need or want to get something done is almost more of a grind than actual grinding..

    Just my 2 cents....

Sometimes in ESO I've fallen asleep just staring at the screen. Sleeping is my favorite way to unwind although falling asleep sitting up is not ideal.

My daughter says I snore when I do that but she lies.

I think it depends on what you personally think unwinding means.

    I'm currently

in an intensive playwriting class as I'm writing a musical so that means writing every night

debugging my skyrim mod so that I can upload it to Nexus and feel like I won't inflict something horrid on those who try it

Practicing my new classical guitar (well new as of Thanksgiving) and doing about 1 hour or 2 per night

And I have a job and I'm an extrovert so I try to socialize.

So playing a video game is a great way to "unwind" and not have to be so "on" with everything.

Video games don't take a lot of effort and there is not much riding on them as they are entertainment for me.

All the other stuff has a lot of attention and thinking.
