Mike loves Babylon 5, so he took a moment to do some sci-fi tourism in Elite Dangerous to check out the system where the iconic sci-fi show's epnymously named station was situated - Epsilon III.

On paper, ED seems like the open world space game everyone has been craving, but does it fall short of that? and why?

it very dull and force a lot needless time sinks, i love the concept but to find anything you need to reference things on PC can on a phone too but more annoying, they even got 3-4 sites to help find were to go buy/mine/kill/ farm rep since in game it does a very half ass job helping you, think i played 2 weeks before i got tired of the grind.

their are something in the game that are nice but the deeper you go the more shallow it becomes and the constant time sinks bored me such as their a really awesome place you should check out 10000 ly away your ship can travel 30 ly per jump early game that good, think starter is closer to 15 ly so assuming you got 30 /y it take about 333 jumps each jump, they can be as little as 1 min if you don't need fuel/explore/ and are focused. so 333 mins to reach the end, not to bad it is a space game and vast but if you were to explore between jumps, refuel, etc, it can be 5-10 mins a jump so the jumps times add up quick but if your having fun who care right?

the issue is you can't auto the jumps, you must be watching the entire time after each jump, adjust then jump again rinse repeat. at first it fun finding new things, new stars, etc, so you won't notice but after 60 or so jumps thing tend to be literally just the same thing over and over, the only new would be when you reach the far off places and fine them.

don't take my word for it, play the game and see it a very long time sink for little to show for it. for a game that 7 years old it lack a lot of QoL things and the people that played day one till now enjoy the grind, so their basis. if you like needless time sinks and long drawn out things it a great game, if not save yourself time and play something else.

Yes, it falls short. Because it exists. Reality can never match our dreams, especially with open world space games where everyone actually dreams a different dream.

Some people love it, some people find it shallow. I am with those that find it shallow. They have a great background simulator and procedural generation technology, great visuals and sounds, but the gameplay loops themselves are shallow and boring, there is too much waiting time (i.e. when in transit), game economy is shallow, there is very little player agency in the world (some people find this last bit good though), and balance (ships, modules, in-game professions) is bad.

It mostly just feels boring and the in-game world dead to me compared to other MMOs. That's by design, it won't change: world is vast, player interaction is not encouraged or forced and most things are procedurally generated. And it doesn't have to, its players like it that way.

I have also experienced same feelings of shallowness with Elite Dangerous. But Odyssey really adds the depth that was lacking for me.
After C2077, i am prepared for it not to have many RPG elements. But the depth you get just by stepping out of your ship is enough at this stage.

After having watched some Odyssey vids, can't say I was impressed:

    - The conflict zone phase in-phase out.
    - No ship internals, no ship boarding fights for example. Disappearing in/out of the ship.
    - No building.
    - The taxi.
    - The station, while immersive and impressive, if I understand correctly is just a fancy menu since everything can be accessed from your ship. Gives me EVE walking in station vibes.

I see Odyssey as mostly one shallow FPS gameloop tacked on top of the existing game, in a non-cohesive manner. Am I missing something?

When i look at Odyssey as a stand alone FPS, it is shallow. Very basic things for FPS: Few weapons, and armor you can upgrade, a small Hubs, basic combat, standard set of missions.

But when you combine it with Horizon, it adds depth to it. Now it is similar to Star Trek Online.
We haven't gotten to Exploration part of Odyssey yet. So no idea how on foot exploration will be, so something to look forward too in Phase 3 in few weeks.

But so far i notice i had more FPS than in Star Citizen, but the requirment to run Odyssey comfortably will be pretty high.

While what you say its true, i think you might have missed something important, people does not realize there is actually hidden lore to be found, being the most "famous" ofc Raxxla or The Dark Wheel, but there are other lore bits to follow like the Black Flight, The Club, Generation ships, etc., i missed all of those things for a lot of time, and in the end like you said "very long time sink" that is not needed, like on the jumps for example, made me leave, from what i have seen i dont think Odyssey is going to make me go back, but hey who knows.
