Hello everyone,
Ive been bummed out on MMO's for a while now. I played Eve for a little while and had some fun. Got a little bored becuase I was not in a coorporation however. Im torn though and need a little help from those of you that are playing.
I never really got into the fighting that much. Did a little just before I quit but that was only about 10 low level missions. Didnt really understand that mission system that well.
I mostly mined. However i like to do both and remember someone saying you cant split you skills that much or you will never advance fast because of splitting training time between two skill sets. A little advice would be great here. SHould I start of fighting, get some ISK build up then dable in mineing?
Also, my toon has around 178k of skill points but Im thinking of just whiping him and starting over. I dont think I was that far into the game to hurt me that bad if I did.
ANy advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

At the very beginning you should probably do missions to get ISK and mission rewards and also learn how to use your ships and loadouts and that type of thing while you continue to train skills. But once you have a certain level of skills, just do what you want. If you don't want to mine, then don't mine. Very simple.
Also try to find a decent corp, because that will really make your EVE experience into something utterly and completely different than trying to play the game alone. It helps in so many ways and just makes things much more fun.
Best advice: Avoid minning!!
Do not do it unless you're with a healthy corp gang and have a direct goal such as building ships for your corps' pilots.
Minning so you can get rich is the worst thing to do in EVE.
Thanks for the replys. I was doing mineing for money myself. I know they say it was the worst way to go but I seemed to get much more from mineing than fighting. I could have been doing something wrong to. In a mineing run I would get any where from 200 - 288k isk. That was in about 30-40 minutes of mining/selling.
Is there a trick to useing agents? I meen will you konw when to goto the next agent? Does the agent you use say "okay you need to goto this guy now", ect. It seemed like before I was takeing so many missions from the one agent in the starting station with no change.
If I start back Ill see abotu finding a good corp. I know a new asian type race has emerged. Thinking of trying them if I do come back
People will tell you to specialize all the time. Actually, its what I say to a lot of people. The bottom line is, specialization will get you to the "best" at what you want to do as fast as possible. But, the good thing about Eve is that there are no useless skills. Only skills you don't use. I have a mainly fighting character, but my refining is maxed, and my production efficiency is at level 4. That's not a waist of skill training. I will always have loot that needs refining and ore that needs it too. What if I need to build myself some drones or some missiles or ammo? PE will come in quite handy. When people say that "skill splitting" is a bad thing, they mean it will take you longer to get "good" at something. That's entirely untrue.
You can be good at something with minimal skill points. I have never ever regretted training mining to level 5. It always comes in handy. Simply because I mine very little doesn't make that skill useless. It just makes it used less. In Eve, you can train what ever skill you so desire. You can stop training a skill and train another without losing (say you don't get podded) any of the time/sp you have trained in the other skills. You can flip and flop and switch and swap all you want. Just remember to have a goal in mind because you can get very lost in all the skills out there.
Do what you want to do. I train what will have the most immediate effects on my gameplay, but also advance me towards my goals. Unfortunately for me... these skills are becoming 16 to 35 days to train. But I don't mind. Eventually, I'll be flying a Carrier with 5 Fighters at max health and damage. I will have accomplished a goal of mine, and I will move on to my next one.

There are two types of people in this world - people that suck... and me.
People who argue against skill diversification are Eve's equivalent of power levelers. They have their own specific goals and want to achieve them ASAP. Good for them. The problem is they assume everyone else is in a hurry too. If you want to dabble and try different aspects of the game then do so. If you've done some research and know exactly where you want to go, then stay focused. PvP, PvE or running a successful trade or manufacturing business can each be fun if they're what appeals to you, you don't have to limit yourself if you like more than one option. It'll just take a while to max out, but if it's a fun journey, who cares?
You're right, 178k isn't a huge amount of skill points. So you won't lose much by creating a new character with one of the new races if that's what appeals to you. I'd suggest doing so with another character slot on the same account though. That way if you want a change from what you're doing with your new character you can just switch to the other (somewhat) established one.
If you do go with a new character I'd recommend Minmatar starter corp Republic Military School. It's a pretty good bunch in there ATM, several from this site and lots of experienced alts, even a couple mains that have been there for a couple years. Most questions get 3 or 4 people answer (sometimes even in agreement :P ) people group to help out on missions, and occaisionally a bit of (mostly unsuccessful but fun) PvP.
Mining for cash is fine if you like chat rooms. Stay in your noob corp and chat while you mine. If you are in a small player corp and are mining with nothing else to do, it is just so boring it's cruel.
When you set up a new player, follow the miners path. Not only does it ramp up your memory it gives you a useable skill set. From there, get to Amarr Indy as a first line of skills. Amarr because you can use the cheap 18% expanders on it to get a good size hold, even if you only take the character to 1, 2 or level 3 Amarr Indy. Mine in a Cruiser and put it in locked cans, go get it with the Indy. Take the time to bookmark so you can insta to and from everything with the Indy and keep it in .5 and up.
This is all of a months play and from there, go where you want with skills. Keep in mind, Eve is very, very, very, very.... yep, very slow paced. Relaxed, casual, call it whatever to meet your spin. It's slow. If you enjoy that then have fun.
Thanks for the miners way to spec free. I was looking a bit more into the fighting arena. Ive done the mineing part twice already. It did bore me to tears becuase I was by myself.
I know there are alot of professions you can take if I remember correctly. Miner, trader, figheter, ect. Those might not be the exact names but close hehe.
IM interested in more than one type of play style. Would like to hear more on different styles of play and professions so I can get a good idea of what I want to do Mainly, in Eve.
Thanks again everyone.
I wouldn't recommend mining.
If you spend all your time training mining skills...What else can you do but mine?
You'll end up mining Veldspar in secure space or become dependant on escorts to mine in unsecure space.
Join EvE University of the Big Blue Alliance, I hear they teach you how to pvp.
Let the bots mine.
about 6 months ago for a couple months buy my wife never could get into it so
we let the accounts go. I've been itching to try the pvp or joining corp side
of the game. I remember it being slightly on the dull side when going it alone
(travel time, 1 click combat and such).
Nevertheless, I'm interested and the 2 accounts for 1 thing (I think that’s how
it works) they just started offering and the upcoming patch that lets you take
over territory seem pretty impressive.
Good thing is, if I open up the Eve Online account I can still play other games
since Eve training can be done offline.
Me like games... *burp*
Got a chance to play today and I must say ALOT has changed. Ill excplain then list my in game name and starting choice's I made.
The biggest difference is the tutorial. Its freaking awsome! It starts out with a cinematic with wonderfully draw pictures that gives you a history of how the races came to be. Pretty interesting honestly. The tutorial is your ships computer aquainting you to every aspect of the game. She also talks which is a nice change (Has a sexy english accent to, hehe). Ive been playing just the tutorial for about an hour to an hour and a half and have learned more that I ever did when I played with the silly tutorial they had before. You remember, the one that lasted only 5 minutes.
Im impressed so far. I didnt delete my miner/corp leader (I found out I had quite a number of corp related skills I didnt remember training lol). I did make my fighting toon from scratch. and Ill give a break down of him here as well.....so, here it goes:
Name: Roku Hisato
Race: Gallente Lineage: Jin-Mei Ancestory: Jing Ko Caste
Skill Point Allocation: INT: +3 Perception: +2
School: Federal Navy Academy Department: Operations
Field: Pilot Speciality: Combat Maneuvering
Thats my toon in a nut shell. I had a character creator help me make up my mind. Here it is Eve Character Tool
Thanks again to all that posted. You have all been great.
If you sell the implant you get you should be able to afford a better frigate, buy and fit one and the level 1 and 2 missions should fly by.
Invest enough time in combat (missions, training, etc...) and you can make some of the best ISK in the game.
Invest enough time in mining, and you can make just as much, and are often more valuable to a corporation.
Solo mining can be boring. Actually, it is boring, but then so is doing the same 12 missions over and over, each and every day until you can move onto a harder version of the same 12 missions. Do what you enjoy, personally - I do both (I mine and NPC - but I don't run many missions).

Actually, I rarely ever solo mine... Where my mining skills come in to play is when I AFK mine. That being, pulling a hauler up to a big ass roid in 0.9 or 1.0 space, turning my miner on, and walking away. I generally do this right before I go to sleep. It's a good way to make a quick million or so. Every now and then a mission with Omber roids comes along and I'll solo mine, but for the most part, I would agree with Mindspat. Though, mining is by far the easiest/best way to make money in Eve next to ransoming people in low sec... which is the best way to make 20mil in 5 minutes.
Bottom line, do what you want. Intel and Percep were the best two attributes to add on to, so you're going in the right direction. Just make sure you diversify until you find what you really like. Then, train in to that.
