Imo they can both be true, even if he states otherwise, I think they are just trying their best to manage expectations ;)

It's very important to not take words as gospel and be able to read between the lines depending on the situation.

So even if he contradicts what he said before by stating that it's delaying the open alpha due to exposure reasons (marketing) it's still the best thing to do for the project. Imo.

Just be honest, that's a garbage excuse because New World's July Beta has more hype behind it than ESO's 5th/6th and declining in quality expansion in June.

new world beta is on July 20, 20 days of ashes is enough.

Asmongold is probably one of the biggest streamer that will play Ashes of creation Alpha one and on June 1 World of warcraft: The Burning Crusade (Classic) is releasing. Matter of fact, lots of people will stream that. So yes it does make perfect sense here.
its not that Ashes of creation wont be able to compete, it's more because it wont have the exposure that they would have wanted Since all the streamer will be playing wow. So Pushing it 1 month make sense.
This is a true development alpha. This is not a marketing alpha; and what that means is as you know part of the process here in developing Ashes of Creation is being open with that development so you guys can see that progress; and it is a double-edged sword. [2] – Steven Sharif

Which one is true?  because they cannot both be.

That's why you'll get mostly useless and superficial basic feedback like:

    - "Animations look stiff"
    - "Render Distance is awful"
    - "Spell is too noisy"
    - "Performance sucks"

Because general gamers will compare the alpha with what they are costumed to play, finished and polished games while ignoring that those things will iteratively be slowly worked as the game evolves.

Wait, I've seen gamers complain about such things in long released games.

I think maybe (some) gamers enjoy complaining more than actually playing games.

(Yes, I am staring right into the mirror here)

Both can exist. And when i said the exposure, I mean lot of feedback,

For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, been my observation most folks would rather play a released game (well, besides Star Citizens of course) ;) than help do alpha testing so it makes sense for Stephen to defer, especially if he's counting on creating marketing good will generated by streaming.

So a "non-marketing Alpha" and a Marketing Alpha can co exist in the same Alpha.  Sure it can.  Makes sense.

And you said exposure right after speaking about Asmongold and streamers.  We know exactly what you meant.

Once they actually drop the NDA they will get more "feedback" than they can handle.

IMO, Intrepid Studio has grown in maturity over the games development. They have learned how to respond to their fans. Instead of using filler words like, we need to delay to work on "polish" as they have said in the past. This time, they have listed things they need to delay for and what they are working on with this delay. IMO, good on them.

No one wants a mess like Elyon did with their recent beta. Not even testing their current build just to build hype and get people playing a game in a state of utter mess. Intrepid Studio is owning their problems with their build, not making excuses or covering it over with fluffy words. This is a good thing. We know their game plan and we can hold them accountable.

So if I'm reading this correctly.....they believe they cannot have proper testing if there is 'release competition' of any kind....? Honestly, that's BS. They could easily still have it now and push the time of the alpha by a month.....and before you knights in white begin to suit up, Same excuse will just follow when Endwalker comes out in fall or Elyon and there like 1-2 other betas. Fk, wouldn't surprise me if they use this excuse whenever Bless Unleashed comes out or whenever Blizzard puts out the PTR for 9.2. Grow some stones. OH WAIT! THEY CAN'T DO IT IN JULY! THAT'S AROUND THE TIME OF NEW WORLD! DELAY IT TO 2022 GUYS!

Yeah the mere mention of testing the last 10 years has in reality meant a MARKETING ploy and not really about TESTING.
If the TRUE intent is to TEST the product they could just open it up to anyone but nope, instead we usually get INVITES,press, media, favorable YouTube streamers etc etc.

If you want to PROPERLY market your product you be honest and open and NEVER deceptive.
Deceptive tactics might work on a lo of people but you will piss off the others who see through the veil.

They tried the same BS with the BR testing..lol.We can only test these systems in a BR setting haha good one. From what i heard they had planned on keeping the BR idea,i don't know that is still true, likely not since the idea did not go over well.

I also have to wonder if they did not want to coincide versus competition because many of the paid off lackeys were going to focus on those other games and could not be brought on board to help promote THIS game.

On the LAST posters talk i will chime in.
When it is under NDA it is CONTROLLED talk .
They are already showing this to the world and we have have threads started by this site claiming Intrepid wants our feedback on various ideas.
This is ALL marketing and if you are a AFRAID to show a product you continually brag about and HYPE to the public then i guess your product is not so good is it?

We have this "content creator" program, what do you THINK that is and WHAT is it's true purpose? It's true purpose is to PROMOTE it to the public AND to TRY and gate and control what is being said.

That similar sentiment has been expressed with each delay (going back to 2018).  That they have learned.  That the next time they give a date it won't be until it's air tight...

Maybe this time it's true...  but if I were a gambling man I know which side I would wager on.

Since they now say there is no limit to the amount of Alpha accounts they will sell, I totally agree that this is 100% a marketing Alpha.

We will be focusing on these changes to ensure that we are hitting the goals we want prior to Alpha One, and when we feel we are ready, we will share the new Alpha One date. I know you want a new date, and we’d love to be able to give a new date now, but we don’t want to throw one out there and have to take it back. The trust of our community is dear to us, and so we must be careful in promising what we can deliver. This means that when we do give you a new date, you can be assured that it is one that we have ultimate confidence in. In that spirit, we can say that this is not a delay in terms of years, but in terms of months, and that Alpha One will be in your hands before you know it!" - ( 2019-03-07-creative-director's-letter)

That's one of 7 (guessing) delays.  They sure sounded like they were going to hold themselves accountable back then as well.   The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Someday... probably... they will drop the NDA and then we will know what reality is.  Maybe it's good.  Maybe it's bad.   We will see... probably... someday

Which one is true?  because they cannot both be.

They are both true. Showing the game to the community is the closed NDA testing, when you open it to the world it is done to entice more interest/backers and to get feedback and data along the way.

Incorrect. His quote continues to specifically describe the test as the open non-NDA testing.

But at the end of the day what's important for us and what yields the best possible product is for us to include as much as possible the community in that development process with no NDA so that you guys give valuable feedback; and as we go through the iterative process in further defining the game and fleshing out that content

So again: both are speaking to this same NON-NDA test.  Which is true?  Is it "not a marketing Alpha" as stated by Stephen?   Or is it as sk8calf says and the delay was due to "it's more because it wont have the exposure that they would have wanted Since all the streamer will be playing wow "

Both cannot be true about the same non-NDA test.

Everything is marketing to Stephen, that's his whole gig.

Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.
