Have not heard anything about it, but would be interesting the way it would have to be implemented.

Here's some brief news about it:

I'm not sure how it'll be implemented, but it'll certainly be interesting to find out. With so many Trek fans out there, it's almost guaranteed to be a success.

Star Trek mmorpg, hell yeah that would be sweet

The link with the little bit of information about a Star Trek MMORPG is from a project that Verant Interactive (now a defunct company and totally absolved into and 100% SOE) was going to produce, they scrapped the idea in favor of a Star Wars MMORPG. Well we all see what the results of that decision were heh.

The only other rumor I have ever heard of a Star Trek MMORPG was just recently and very breif, it was in the video for UXO, one of the people they had in the video says something like "Well I was going to play Star Trek but I after trying this I think I am going to play it" or something like that. Hardly proof of any Star Trek game comming out and that is extreme reaching at best but hey one can dream can't one?

It would be interesting to see how they pull off Star Trek. I think they'd have to have ships of different sizes from 1 man ships to the bigger 2000+ ones.

If I was going to do it I'd look at the ship as taking over the role of the group in other mmorpgs, like usually you gather a group and you all individually wander around. The ship would do the wandering, and everyone is along for the ride. Not everyone could be on the bridge, thus why only guilds would probably have the discipline to pull of the bigger ships. The smaller ships would work better for people just meeting up for some quick adventuring(freelancers, pirates, mercenaries). Now of course on the other hand that big starship could spawn smaller groups(away teams) in shuttle pods. Not sure what the limit is on how many pods a ship like say the enterprise has. Anyway you could feasibly do the same roles we've come to understand in mmorpgs in star trek. Like take a healer, now we have 2 types one is a doctor who heals living beings, the other is an engineer who heals the ship. The doctor could cast his spells except they'd become blips and beeps from his scanner, the engineer I'd make like a crafting class. He'd have to locate where the problem is on the ship and then go banging away on that rock err I mean ship. As he leveled he get better and eventually could buff the ship err make modifications to it. The tank would be the tactical officer. The helmsman I'd make a npc, not sure what role it could fill. The captain would be the group buffer, by him being there he instills other to perform better, and he would also be an aggro debuffer by parlaying with npcs and other group(ships). I never played EQ so I'm not to up an up on all the roles that the classes play. Plus I'm also not that much of a trekie either. Firefly and babylon 5 were more my thing.

Oh yea there would have to be some 1st person in this game much like elite forces. C'mon there would be boarding parties. Plus with the holodeck they could have an actual in game mmorpg you could play.

Now to do it right they'd have to have servers for all the different time periods of the shows i.e. classic next generation, and enterprise. Plus staying true to star trek they have to have alternitive universes where people have facial hair and are evil. That universe, and having ships switch servers could come about through odd random events like say Q, or some time continium distortion.

Anyway thats my take with just about maybe 5 minutes of thought put into it. I'd hope whoever makes it wouldn't try to make it not a ship based game.

I bet it would be a huge money Maker. I mean think about Star Trek fans are about as rabid as Star Wars fans!  and look how many stuck with SWG even though (only my opinion) its Horrid.

Think a lot of Naysayers would be surprised. I just wonder how it would be accomplished?!?!

    Guilds = Starships?

  • BrizahdBrizahd Member Posts: 60

I wasn't saying guilds=starships but that it would take a guild to afford one ,and maintain it. I mean imagine having this huge ship and only maybe a handful of people can be on the bridge and decide where the rest go? Not alot of people will like not being in the seat so they'd probably have their own smaller ship with a smaller crew. Guilds could pull it off because of alt characters and their own internal rank structure.

I'd like to see a sci-fi game that used this concept instead of earth and beyond type, never played eve so can't comment on that.

If they can do SWG they could do a StarTrek MMOG as well...would be a big success!

Could be a mixture between SWG, EVE and a Spaceship simulation. Player could play the Races of Humans, Vulcans, Klingons etc. Big ships could be multicrewed with different players manning different stations of the ship. Small ships could be commanded by a player who has ai crew to command around.

Player could explore, trade, make war, settle down on planets forming new colonies/cities, have a politics system, votes, an admiralty and and and...

If done right such a game could be a great success and appeal to many players!

I was never really a big star trek fan, untill about a month ago, when I watched 1 episode that my brand spanking new tivo recorded, anyhow now I have a season pass for every next generation episode and I have probly watched about 50 so far and have loved every single episode.

I think if done correctly "unlike swg" a star trek mmo would be much better than swg, for 1 thing most of the main races are actualy fleshed out and have some depth where in star trek you know very very little about 99% of the races, not to mention its not such a centrallized theme, I.E. its not omg we are at war with the empire must kill...

Its a much more free form idea and thus could be a much broader game in the sence that there would be no centrallized theme however you could do massive events and have insanely wicked quests, not every mission/quest would be go to x imperial base and kill x imperial etc, you would never know what type of mission you may get you may be dealing with and number of races and or factions, in any number of star systems, the diversity of gameplay could be grand yet there is still a great basis for large events like a federation/klingon war etc.

And of course you wouldent be forced into being in the federation, you could be a part of many different factions, or just work for yourself. Even be a smuggler etc.

It could also be an amalgam of a couple different kinds of games.

You have certain rules/codes to abid by if your part of one of the major groups but when you start you could be some lowly freighter captain or pirate or something and that would affect how people respond to you as would your race (Klingon/Vulcan/Human/etc.) Have maybe 10 races? Some are better at some things than others or give enhancements to some things as opposed to others.

But when you complete missions and so on you get experience an build up faction points similar to SWG with the major powers. Eventually allowing you to join them and get command of a small ship or something an use your experience to train the crew of that ship and purchase upgrades for the ship or more/better crew members...

When you get into battle the ship could take damage and theres always the chance that crewmen will be killed in which case you'd have to goto an outpost/starbase of whatever group your with (if not solo) and buy more manpower.

Crafting would be minimal other than trade skills like mining or technician or some of the classes of science an so forth you could get skill points for yourself that would allow you to increase your Diplomacy or Leadership things which you can use to enhance crew performance.

Planet missions could be instanced? So you have an NPC crew that comes down with you? Or fellow members of your fleet? Certain sectors of space instanced before big battles? When your ship is destroyed (escapepods) or you "die"(beamed back aboard) on away mission you wake up in a starbase/sickbay respectively.

Hmmmm....but Viacom wouldn't go for it. A game like this might revive Star Trek and they're trying too hard to kill it for them to agree to this.

humm.. would be hard to work this one out as a mmorpg, but if they did it right it would rockimage

I dunno.. I was, and still am really, a very big Trek fan.  But I've never found a game that came anywhere close to feeling like "Star Trek".  It's just not a show that lends itself to a game interface.  It relies too much on interpretation of values and things of that nature.

I can't see an MMO pulling off a Star Trek universe feel to it.  After all, who wants to be an ensign when they could be captain?

Sounds interesting but they'd almost have to offer the game for free.  Star Trek titles haven't exactly had awe-inspiring releases.

  • TyphoneTyphone Member Posts: 59

I don't think the point should be to make it feel like "star-trek" just make it based in the star-trek universe. Sorta like swg insept make it good.

skill based system, spaceships from the start, lots of fleshed out races, tons of real quests, missions etc. Great crafting system.

Having been a Trek fan since the Original (yes I am that old) - I would love to see a ST MMO, but I wouldn't want another SWG.

You know, I made my account because I had this very game idea...

You start out picking your race and then class and then affiliaiton, you could start out as a human engineer for the federation for instance and you would be just graduating from academy... and you progress in ways not dissimilar to other MMOs.  Same for Klingon soldiers for the Klingon Empire or Bajoran Diplomats or whatever.

The fact is, being a Captain is the end game Elite Class.  By the time you've accumulated all the skills and faction points to be a captain, you're really done at least a little bit of all there is to do.  So you do a lot of buffing for other people, the only Class that can do that besides Doctors, who are very limited.

Keeping the values theme of Star Trek will be hard, but that can be done by giving the conversation dialogue trees to Star Trek writers (problem solved) a klingon comes up and you pick what you say to them in the case of NPCs.  If the other captain is a player you both pull up options that are expanded to take that into account...

Away teams would be like FPSs combat-wise though there would be a few nice melee options and animations... ship battles would have to involve in depth coordination between the helmsman, moving the ship in 3D space (or picking the evasive maneuver), the weapons guy, firing ala FPS and tactical, doing the shileds and so forth...

If you make all the jobs fun in different ways (being an engineer, being on away teams, dialogueing with emissaries, flying the ship, being a doctor, being a security officer, commanding NPCs, etc...) then this game would totally rock...

ships = guilds in some cases, but not all, after all, independents have ships too...

The coolest thing about this game would be all the different planets and storylines that could be explored... there's all kinds of one-time content while fulfilling the over-arching mission which you've been given... It'd be funny if your ship gets destroyed a lot... crewing the Enterpryse-N is always funny...

only problem is, players wouldn't want to prevent full-scale wars while most characters in Star Trek do...
