Trailers come in many forms, from cinematic to gameplay and even accolades trailers meant to promote how well a game is doing. But they serve a purpose: to drum up excitement about a game. Since last Friday, Bradford has been stuck with the FFXIV Endwalker trailer in his head, and he's not sure that's happened for a few years where a trailer left an impression.

Hearing the Morrowind theme at the end of the ESO Morrowind trailer definitely caught my attention.
Another one, largely due to great music, was the trailer for GW2's Season 4 finale.

Atlas by a longshot because i saw traces of the game i always dreamed of one day playing.
FFXIV trailer was very well done and was fun to watch but sadly i had already followed the design of the game long before it released and knew it was going to disappoint me.

Typically trailers do little for me,i'll enjoy watching them but know full well it has little to do with actual gameplay.

The cgi trailers for SWTOR before it released were pretty amazing, also the ones for ESO are very well done.

The last time I got excited about an MMO after watching it's trailer was this:

As for the final fantasy trailer, I'm not sure whats going on in this, its like watching highlights from a korean soap.

It's been my experience that cinematic trailers never equal what you usually get from a game, so I never expect as much. For entertainment purposes I think Blizzard is king. Love the cinematics they do for WoW. ESO are good, but I think they outsource theirs. FFXIV are usually good, but I don't care much for the music, and they tend to be on the long side for me.

This one had me for some reason. Really like the music and atmosphere in this one. Before this trailer probably the first one for WoW.

I'm not generally impressed by videos.  Like @Scot said above, I play games, not trailers.  How a game processes my input and responds are the critical elements that videos mostly miss.

The official SWTOR trailers were excellent, but what really got me excited before release was a fan made one where they took the trailers and stitched them together over "This is War" by the 30 Seconds to Mars.

I also recall a trailer for Defiance that someone made with "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons that had a similar effect.

Diablo 4 trailer is insane. Doubt I'll care about the game but the trailer definitely made me at least have a passing interest.

I enjoy watching them, they can be pretty entertaining however, I learned long ago to not take a trailer as gameplay ...or even close to gameplay. WAR had some cool trailers but the gameplay was nothing close, SWTOR had amazing trailers, but the gameplay was (and still is IMO) crap. Etc.

These cinematic trailers can be flashy but they do nothing for me regarding the actual game. Zero attention. Show me gameplay.

This same trailer for FFXIV is the latest one for me. There are a lot of people that don't like this style of game and that's fine. For those of us who play and follow the story, this trailer was a perfect lead into the end of an era. Don't get me started on the music. Soken is an absolute genius.

I've had my disagreements with the gearing system of FFXIV but I absolutely love the story and music.

Like others, I too had to reach far back for that - that ain't a sign of bad trailers recently, rather the lack of MMORPGs...

My first, automatic answer was TSW's piece about Alex in the men's room, 10 years ago

but then I remembered the Protostar ad a year later :)  so, that's my take on the question, last time a trailer really got my attention 9 years ago

For a game I haven't played that's crucial. For a game I am playing, I've already seen plenty of in game footage so can do without. A company with enough resources would probably do well to do both, one more cinematic for their current players and another more grounded in gameplay for prospective new ones.

Well, I'm a huge movie lover so for me, the trailer is "the movie of the game" albeit a small slice of the game.

They are usually enjoyable to me.

Last mmorpg trailer that I enjoyed? Probably the latest Blackwood trailer (someone posted it above) or one of the Star Wars the Old Republic trailers.

None have really caught my attention except SWTOR and GW 1. Maybe ESO. SWTOR's are a work of art, you have to admit! One of my favorite trailers is Battlefleet Gothic's release trailer. Damn, that one's good! Another good one is "my name...what is my name???".
  • GruugGruug Member RarePosts: 1,794
I could list a lot of trailers that were eye popping or gripping or entertaining. The problem is, none of them really represented what the MMO (or any other game for that matter) was really like. Trailers are by design made to get out attention. However, they are not always (and often not) representative of the gameplay itself. I choose instead to say "great trailer, but what is the game actually like?".

Let's party like it is 1863!
