Romance is a huge part of any (good) BioWare game. With the recent release of Mass Effect Legendary Editions, new and old players alike are rekindling old flames, or starting new ones. However, one group of modders is digging a bit deeper.

I have nothing against romance in roleplaying games, but these "old flames" are not real, as long as we all understand that. :)

Meh I'd rather have a mod that got rid of the romance stuff altogether.

Agreed, romance in games has been pretty pointless and stupid to me. I play games like Mass Effect and Dungeons & Dragons, so I can fly in space and shoot aliens with laser guns, or fight evil necromancers and their undead minions.. fight dragons, be a wizard and hurl fire balls.. Stuff I can't do in real life.

If I want romance, I can do that in real life, I don't need that melodramatic and useless crap taking up game space or inflating the price.

It's optional so don't do it. Why complain about something you can totally avoid. Options for other players have no impact on you. Such a selfish attitude about things other players want.

I had my female Shepard romance Garrus Vakarian, I enjoyed the option.

yeah, but role-playing games are about character and story, and "romance" or "friendship" or intense human interaction is part of the whole story process.

If there are characters with wants and needs then there is going to be friendship. And making enemies. If you have friendships then in some cases you'll have stronger feelings. And perhaps (though I don't know of any role-playing games that have capitalized on this) spurned lovers.

Even Lord of the Rings has romance.

    Now let's look movies ...

    Star Wars - romance
Saturn 5 - romance and creepy romance
    Logan's Run - Romance
    Beast Master - romance
    Conan the Barbarian - Romance

And that's because it's part of what happens when people are put together in intense situations.

I don't think anyone (or many) plays the romance options in these games because they can't have a relationship in real life. But they are playing a character and a story.

I'm not a prude, but I always get the same feeling during romance scenes in games that I would get as a kid when the musical numbers would come on in Disney cartoons...It's whatever and I get why people like it, but I also don't want my friends to catch me watching...

I find it so weird when people think romance is out of place in games. It's literally one of the most basic, essential, powerful human motivations. How is that not fundamental to roleplaying?

" A lot of the time this audio gets recorded accidentally" I'm sorry but that's horsehit. You don't "accidentally" record gay romance scenes unless you intended (or very seriously considered) on making them for the game.

Quite so. The scenes wouldn't have been made if not being considered for potential use.

We can't expect games to just pretend romance does not happen, it is a staple of stories no matter how they are told. As long as you don't have a full sized carboard replica of your favourite in game squeeze at home then I don't see any issues. I know guy who has one of those for Lara Croft, supposedly they gave it to him at the end of the promotion, I think he nicked it. :)

Even GTA San Andreas has romance :)

It's a RP game if it's not there would be weird.

About as pointless as sex scenes in movies and TV shows. If I want to see sex I got a wife, or pornhub. Sex in video games is for simps.

I think back to that stupid sex mini-game from one of the God of War games. So pointless..

That's not really why sex scenes are put in. Not exactly. I've seen this argument before and clearly, some people don't understand the difference between including sexual content and "porn."

You are of course welcome to your opinion but it's a very myopic view in my opinion.

This doesn't mean that it's always done "right" nor does it mean that some games don't lean more toward pornography.

However, another thought, if sexual content shouldn't be included in a visual story then violence should also not be included.

I mean, why would anyone want to see someone torn apart amaright? Because that's for psychopaths.

That was my first thought as well, and I'm eager to see how it will unfold, since it'll be a perfect test case on how much the times/world/industry has changed since the early 2000s.

Perfect test case in the sense of when stripped it down (pun intended) it's exactly the same as HC was:
-devs code something into the game
-devs ship the game without those assets available/reachable
-modders find those within the code and make it available again to everyone.

The events after that are history now in Hot Coffee's case, while it's still fresh with ME, so far only the mixed community reactions are there, mainly divided not upon the "romance" but the "gay" part.
Which is already a difference, in HC's case the community was either shrugged upon/ignored it, or just downloaded and used the mod.

What will be more interesting to see, is how the world/industry will react.
Back in 2005 it was a mess, Take2 went against the modding community and blamed them of breaking the EULA, called them even hackers.
FTC did hearings, an investigation, and roasted ESRB over it.
People (who don't play GTA) did protest campaigns and rallied against Rockstar.
Hillary even introduced a bill about it (which became FEPA) - and in return got her face introduced into GTA's world :D

We'll see where the events go in the next couple weeks...

I like well done companion quests and improving relations with them. Whether that leads to romance with cheesy sex scenes or just a platonic friendship I don't really care just as long as there is some in game purpose with tangible benefits for strengthening the bond with them.

I love the ME games to bits but IMO they could have done more with the companion trusting relationship benefits than just unlock a few skills for the companions. I like the systems as in FO4 or Greedfall and many others where there is a significant buff to your character also for successfully completing the companion quest arc whenever you use that companion in missions.

Anyway after all these years it's still Tali for me all the way :)

There is already a whole genre for this. Dating sims.

I find the entire thing cheesy and cringe. If you enjoy it have at it.

I don't care for a dating sim in my rpg.

I imagine dating sims are solely about "dating" and not about various interactions between people during a more expansive story with many more aspects to the plot other than the romance.
