When did all these fly-by night studios suddenly decide the mmorpg genera was ripe for the fleecing? Can we blame Star Citizen yet? Anyone who losses 80k to this probably deserved to lose it.

anyone who pays 80k has 80k too lose xD
Word, funny how that works in crypto. Looking at games on ETH base layer with 1 eth, 2 eth prices looks insane to most but to someone who had 5000k eth at 20$ it's nothing.

This tho is on crypto, Entropia Universe was the big boy here long before crypto was a thing working via cash deposite/withdrawal, now it's literally a monetary investment with potential monetary return via crypto.... in the shape of a game "play in my zones pay my taxes with your crypto".

If a title like this pulls it off and gets trendy tho, these early investments will multiply eventually leading to the same jealously as of early bitcoin adopters. Still be gambling money away.

Block chain gaming is the future. I have quit my job because of axie infinity. I can't wait for other even better block chain games to change the future.

I don't know if that was a wind up, but no one should quit their job to play a block chain game; there is a security in work that blockchain simply does not have.

With Entropia Universe you had a game first and the money came gradually later as the game was popular enough.

The idea that you purchase in-game stuff that doesn't exist yet became popular much later, mostly with crowdfunded MMOs.

80,000 for virtual land in a game that hasn't released yet?

    Totally not a scam.

The problem I see with every one of these "block-chain" games is that they are simply trying to shoehorn a game into the financial scheme that they've created. This game is about the most uninspired and generic thing I've ever seen. The only "players" that even stand a remote chance to make any money off this stuff are the ones in the first round of buying. After that it will be reliant on people actually playing the game to keep it active and popular. Buying an $80k plot of land in a game with no players is no different then lighting 80k on fire.

If someone made a bunch of money speculating on cryptocurrency, sold the crypto in favor of real assets that aren't likely to be worth approximately $0 in the near future, and then quits his job, I could understand that.  It's kind of like quitting your job after winning a lottery jackpot.  What would be egregiously foolish is quitting before winning that jackpot, in hopes that someday you will.

Buying an 80k plot of land before the game is even close to market saturation and while the game is DESTROYING charts is how you double your 80k. Axs is now in the top 100 Coins and literally quadrupled in 4 days and is still going up. Dont know what game you are talking about buying 80k lands and lighting on fire because axie infinity is printing money.

People who got in early having made lots of money is also true of a classic Ponzi scheme.

If the game is terrible or never launches, then the land will be worthless.  So far, they haven't given any reason to believe otherwise.  "Please buy land" accounts for perhaps half of their web site.  The other half reads like it's aspirational stuff that they'd like to do someday, but haven't done yet and might not be able to do at all.

If you're considering running off and giving them money, consider that it's both browser-based and a mobile game.  That considerably limits what you can do with game mechanics.

It's not DreamWorld level of obvious scam, but it does sound seriously fishy to me.

I expect the foundation of this was the widespread acceptance of f2p and all that came with it, as that likely led to providers having the state of mind that since we swallowed that we'd happily gulp down anything. We've largely proven them correct.

Home ownership and MMORPGs usually aren't get rich quick schemes.  Nor is insurance, at least unless you're going to commit fraud.  Stocks perhaps can be, but at least there's something of value underlying it, not just land in a game that doesn't yet exist and likely never will.

You can't really have cryptocurrency trading and the promise of getting rich in a single-player game.  It doesn't even work in local multiplayer, nor in session-based online games where everything resets when you log off.  In order for a get-rich-quick scheme based on cryptocurrencies in games to even be the slightest bit plausible, it has to be in an online game with a massive number of players, and it needs to have some very long-term persistence.  So basically, an MMORPG.

It also has to be a cryptocurrency that is not a "poor mans" version. One of the videos that supported the idea of these games pointed that out, another called them "dodgy" cryptocurrencies. Not all mind you, but that is worth looking into if you must play such games.

I am just excited for games like axie infinity, which are already changing the world, to lay a path for other developers to innovate and drive even more ingenious design. Block chain gaming when done right, like axie infinity, is mindblowing.
