Final Fantasy 14 has been picking up major steam, but there's no singular reason why so many new players have joined - just a perfect storm of circumstances.

As soon as I saw this article I knew there was going to be some airhead talking about Asmongold in the comments.

Stop that shit. Asmongold didn't fucking bring in every single new player. People who keep saying this really push the toxicity that is fucking Twitch and the streaming world in general. Believe it or not, the world is more than just Twitch.

It may have brought some people, but you're fucking lying to yourself if you think it brought every new person.

Streamers in general brought almost all of the new players. You're lying to yourself if you think this was because of anything else. Bigger question is, why does this upset you so much?

First, your claim is total bullshit if you don't substantiate it with anything so why say that Asmongold brought almost all new players? How surprising, another fanboy.

Doesn't upset me 'so much', it gets tiring though when tons of posts on the FF14 subreddit and mouth breather fans of Asmongold immediately jump on any subject about growth in an MMO that the dude players is all thanks to him.

Truly, fans of streamers are some of the weirdest, most simpy people I've ever seen. It's just like any celebrity person's fanbase - if the celebrity shits, it's gold to them.

i think game devs with a game that got popular on twitch before showed their numbers, and purchases after trending on twitch, and it showed it amounted to nothing and the devs got little to nothing in profit from their sudden popularity
it was some indie game on steam, no publisher would admit that crap.

personally i dropped FFXIV for ESO a long time ago,

Not because Asmongold thats for sure.

It had many streamers trying it out for quite some times and popularity grew with it.

Asmongold trying it is just a consequence of just that and not the other way around. He follows trends, simple as that.

The free demo up to lvl 60 including Heavensward is another reason. Everystreamer says that to anyone asking if the game is worth checking out.

Seems to me like many follow these streamers and influencers like the sheep do a shepherd. If they say "I like this game" then the sheep will play too.

I am sure many MMO's benefit from those leaving the MMO with the biggest player base out there, for me Lotro was the MMO that came after WoW. I am sure players go the other way as well, FFIXV to WoW, not sure what all the fuss is about. As long as players are enjoying their MMO, everyone can be happy.

It is quite reasonable to control the digital download to ensure server stability, more MMOs should do that. There may be a server upgrade as mentioned but this is SE's version of MMO crowd control and it makes perfect sense.

The free trial is definitely generous and I would strongly advise anyone to get to Heavensward via that before purchasing the game, so you can take your time going through ARR. ARR can definitely make you change your mind on the game if you feel like you're spending your sub time slogging through it. Heavensward and onward go by much quicker though and your time is better spent their.

I think the bigger thing to take into account is that more people are seeing that its okay to play more than 1 mmorpg. Things are probably more accessible compared to how they were in the past and its okay to not just dedicate yourself to one thing. Years of thinking that way can be hard to break, but it seems like more people are dipping their toes into the water and at least are changing things up. It might help them revisit WoW or wherever they originally dedicated themselves with a fresher pair of eyes.

Sure streamers are part of it.

    A free trial.

Complete dissatisfaction with current WOW storyline. I tried out current WOW when I played classic BC last month and I made it two quests in and uninstalled. Its a shallow shell of its former self.

The FFVII remake. Hugely popular and led to a lot of interest from people outside of the FF universe.

Boredom from the past year. Lots of people played the heck out of games through lockdowns and working from home and sheltering from a pandemic. They exhausted themselves on their current game so they are looking for something new.

I always come back to FFXIV and its one of my staples for sure.

This is the best solid response.

While i personally didn't enjoy FFXIV as much as i enjoyed FFXI, i'm happy others do.

For those of you pissing and moaning it wasnt asmongold. Their sales didnt spike once he started playing for nothing. He had at some point oh.. idk.. 200,000 viewers.

Look at the numbers instead of flying off the handle because youre a fanboy or you have some resentment towards the guy.

Agreed!  FF14 2.0 has been been picking up steam since it released.  It's really amazing that they managed to keep the momentum for this long in this MMO climate.  Even if you don't like the game, a rising tide like this could lift the whole genre.

They did so many things right after 1.0, too.  I had no interest in FF14 1.0 as I didn't care for FF 11, but after seeing the 1.0 server ending event, I preordered 2.0 at first chance!

It's not really my thing, but it's objectively a really beautiful and well made game that has a lot to like if you are into the modern FF aesthetic.  unfortunately, I'm more of a DQ guy, myself.

I started FF14 again about two months before the current insanity. I had finally completed all of the ARR quests and am quite deep into Heavensward. It's a great MMO with an engaging story and lots of content. And I say that as someone that struggled immersing myself in JRPG's.

Asmongold's influence or not, FF14 is worth the insane attention it is receiving.

For me it comes down to one simple choice, do i want to play, or watch cut-scenes?

I want to play, so i play wow.

The long hallway quests are a killer for me, just when i think there couldn't be yet another cut scene there is.

Was at a friends and i haven't had regular tv for well over a decade and like F The amount of commercials is unreal, just when you think ok back to the show, NOPE squeezed in 4 more commercials, that's how excruciatingly painful FFXIV is to me, i'm like my dude stream ffs, his wife has to have tv?

Really I just want to play, be challenged, continually excel and improve my skills so fffxiv is so not a game for me.

I was all razzle dazzle'd by FFXIV years back too and after the flash wears off you start to realize just how weak the game is at the core.

My Advice, have fun while it lasts.

Ffxiv is simply the best themepark out there right now with a dev team that trully knows thier target  playerbase. (Casual mmo players)

Now combine ffxiv catering to players and constant positive improvements, with blizzard continously  releasing shit... patch after patch, expansion after expansion. Boom explosive growth for ffxiv.

Wow ppl are flocking in droves to ffxiv. All wows content creators going to ffxiv is increasing the wow exodus. The decline of wow is causing the boom in ffxiv.

Now me personally i give ffxiv a 6/10 wow a 5/10. They are both medicore mmos to me. But then again i hate solo player. Pure linear themepark games.

Couldn't that be said about World of Warcraft?

I mean, I find World of Warcraft, besides being too silly, dreadfully dull.

Little text boxes over a character are such a subpar way to tell a story. If there is a story to be told.

Cut Scenes allow for the characters to be more vibrant and the scenes to be more alive.

I get what your saying though. A lot of mmorpg's want you doing very little and they just create a relay race. Collect 3 of these. Now kill 2 of these.

So a player spends a lot of time just running around instead of "doing" anything.

Still, for those people who player Final Fantasy 14, they are probably playing it for the visual world and the story.

And if a mmorpg is going to have a story, I'd much rather listen to a cut scene and experience the characters than read a little bit of text over a very static character.

Though it's my understanding that World of warcraft has tried to make their characters a bit more alive here and there.
