ArtCraft Entertainment's Crowfall launched back on July 6th, bringing the PvP-centric, throne war MMO to center stage. But how does it stack up thus far with about a week's worth of gameplay under our belts? Matt takes you through in his review-in-progress.

"A community can make or break an MMO and Crowfall is definitely making it for me. So far my experience with the community both in general chat and within my guild and faction has been fantastic."

I agree. Really good community experience especially for a PvP game!

I do not know how you can actually give this game a good review. I do not understand...

It is a solid 2/10 in it's current state.

It's a niche game.... hopefully the devs keep patching and improving the game.

Nice write up. Totally agree about the complexity of systems being a barrier. I'm not sure if it is just complexity, or if it is more that the game struggles to explain its sytems in an organic way that leads players to a deeper understanding of how everything meshes together.

The crafting is an interesting example of this. As your screen shot of intermediate crafting shows, it seems really intuiative at first while still being quite deep. However, the real crafting is an order of magnitude more complex, and the volumes of materials and cross-crafted items needed to make anything makes it almost impossible to craft unless you are being fed resources from a guild.

I have been finding the youtube videos by dilbo daggins really helpful in explaining how everything fits together.

Same for me. Since the gameplay/fight system is terrible, I don't how you can enjoy the game atm.

It may seem like a 30 level tutorial is a lot, but it doesn't take more than a few days/week to hit level 30. Perhaps this is why it seems so complex, because you are doing a lot in a short period of time.

When a game focuses on a few small aspects, those things need to be a little more complex or you will get bored fast.

I'm kind of a fan of tab targeting, but I don't mind if combat is a little more action oriented like this, especially if it's done well. I think Crowfall did combat targeting well though I get that it isn't for everyone. Then again, I thought Wildstar did it a decent job at an action style combat and that game died...lol.

My only gripe is the lack of a persistent world. They need to expand what can be done in your eternal kingdom because it doesn't feel like I have much of an impact on the world.

Yeah.  One friend started at launch.  Did not play beta.  Did not want any power leveling, items, nothing.   He started at 6PM and by 9PM he was 30.

Depends on class as well.  In testing I played a Crusader... At launch I went Confessor.  The Crusader likely would still be trying to finish the tutorial :)

I had the same experience in the beta, then I found Templar and mob grinding became a breeze. You can start straight at level 25 now anyway and sidestep the whole tutorial.

Yeah I got lucky and picked Vindicator (Templar) as my first char and I can farm like 5-10 mobs per pull and grind easily. My assassin alt can't do anything near this.

Fortunately I can save all those sacrifice items I grind on Vindi and quickly level my alt classes.

You should try Warden.  We made them to fool around with PvP but WOW can they farm.  Literally pulled 22 mobs (tried more but they leashed back).  One Warden. Killed them all easily and ended with 100% health.  Lifetap for the win...

I don't remember it's exact name but there is a disc or skill you take to get +10% and then your Ultimate attack Sustain gives you 40%.  Then there is also an AoE with the Corrupted Soul Disc that heals you for a percent of damage it does.

Agree with the article, think this is a game to keep an eye on if your into open world PvP MMOs, hasn't been a game to do PvP this well in a long time. The game isnt for everyone, but it will definitely be for some, give it a shot and see if its for you.

I played a lot of Darkfall around 2009+ (and Shadowbane in 2008) and of course this game touches that cord. I am one of those who hates tab targeting now. What was very true and remains so here is you need to join a guild. They do not have to be friends: they will become friends. This actually creates a nice social feeling that lacks in many... MMOs! And you do not need to be sociable either, you just will naturally learn to feel part of a group or move on to another.

Nice to see the community is cool... as we all know some communities in PvP games are horrible (Darkfall was a lot of trash talk and had almost zero moderation).

What stops me from playing Crowfall at the moment is the fact I am a fan of immersion, and play a lot of both cRPG and first-person teamwork PvP games (Squad, Post Scriptum). I have a hard time being attracted by the cartoony side and lack of coherent world (society, history). Shadowbane and Darkfall each had a big wide world to explore and Darkfall was oddly immersive for a sandbox that had zero quest.

I am on the fence. Listening to guilds I know and watching to see how things go.

I'm 100% on board with this sentiment from what I like, all the way down to what might keep me from jumping in 100%.
