Not because Asmongold thats for sure.

It had many streamers trying it out for quite some times and popularity grew with it.

Asmongold trying it is just a consequence of just that and not the other way around. He follows trends, simple as that.

The free demo up to lvl 60 including Heavensward is another reason. Everystreamer says that to anyone asking if the game is worth checking out.

Apparently there was a sudden influx of new players such that sales of the game had to be disabled when Asmongold showed interest in the game. Interest hadn't happened to that degree from the every streamer mentioning the level 60 demo before.

So, it looks very much due to the influence of Asmongold on his fans.

It'd make the point stronger if the person writing this article actually showed any semblance of experience playing wow.

The idea that WoW players will look at ffxiv and see it as a fix for wow's problems is so ignorant of how both games work that it hurts. FFXIV "fixes" wow's problems by having basically 1/10th of the serious/hardcore/challenging content , the player base pretending the pvp being awful doesn't matter and having dumbed down systems like class designs (the tanks are virtually all the same class in ffxiv nowadays) and gearing system (compare wow's variety of effects and builds to ffxiv linear stat increases) , no shit if you have no complexity the system barely needs any balance to begin with, because THERE IS NO ITEMS TO BALANCE AROUND.

The influx was unambiguously because of asmongold too, and it won't last.

Also imagine pointing to a crappy website store that runs out of DIGITAL KEYS (HOW?!?!?!??!?!) as a positive for square enix or ffxiv and pretending it's  anything other than a rank display of technical incompetence or short sight

enjoy either game all you want but stop making these nonsensical absurd points

The ffxiv community has some insane levels of inferiority complex, when's the last time you saw a WoW personality try and write cope manifestos?
You don't know if she has no experience of WoW, but also she raised a question mark as to why FFXIV is getting so many new players and attributed it to various factors. I played WoW for about three years, I have never played FFXIV but know many who do. So as to the relative merits of the games I am sure they suit the people who play them, and at the end of the day that's all that matters.

I almost went ahead and reinstalled due to having played previously (stopped part way through storm blood), and almost being suckered in with the hype. Then I remembered how painfully boring I found the MSQ and the combat. Don't get me wrong, FFXIV is a good game it's just not for me, and honestly I believe that many of the "WoW Refugees" will burn out pretty quick with it.

All that said, I hope anyone trying it for the first time has a ton of fun!

    Bows to RLWD.

GAWD it's so nice to have someone on these forums that knows what the f they are talking about. Lots of great posters here as well but lately i've been thinking of totally going 100% in to the blizz ecospere, just hang, post and talk shop there, so tired of people not willing to admit that wow is the only real mmorpg left. Took me a decade to realize this, cause i'm thick as a brick, but i got there lmao.

If an echo chamber is what you want, sure. If you value other opinions, not so much. The only thing I am seeing right now is an ‘My semi linear themepark MMORPG which has like 95% overlap is better then your semi linear themepark MMORPG’ e-peen contest. Entertaining but little more then a clash of fanboys to be honest. Lets not preach fact when we spread opinion.

Well ofc, anyone bouncing off the wall what i'd like to say but never seem to be able to articulate that well writing it out, like, yes, obv i'll lobby their post.

Problem with sites like this is, it's not really full of mmorpg "players", it's full of mmorpg wanderers looking for the next shiny.

I just want to talk to fellow players about the game, talk shop, and when one comes out of the woodwork on this site you're damn straight i'm going to let them know they are appreciated.

I have a wow forum and wowhead account and yeah that's becoming far more attractive place to spend my time posting, different name though as i don't want any of this toxicity to ever show up in my game world, also found another site and yeah lots of game talk there and yeah, i mean it's just so nice to be around other level headed players of our fav mmorpg.

Over a decade ago i played two mmorpg's that's it, it's all you needed, enter wow, and every developer just wanted wow pie, all they thought was, make incredible shallow stupid easy game, people give you tons of money.

The entire genre became "Hit Button I Win!!!", especially ffxiv, but wtf wow has only become harder, deeper, an extremely complex beast, OMG why i got in to mmorpg in the first f'ing place.

I don't want to play several different games, i want one mmorpg to call home with a second one as a back up, but with today's tech not as necessary, and that is SWG:L.

Playing one all the time has value, creates meaning, purpose, everything counts forever, it is the purest fucking point of an mmorpg, a home, always building new memories, friends, extended family, work together, play together, not bounce around them like a pinball screaming to hard i want to pay my way, thank you cash shops for bending me over and giving it to me hard, anything is better than actually having to play, especially with others.

Pretty sure i'm going to love this new site i've been monitoring, all wow fans, i've known about it but didn't know it was so wow heavy, some awesome reading there, all shop talk, and yeah i'm just not going to get that here with the plethora of haters.

Haters always gotta barf out all over the internet their crap, i mean the only positive poster here is Robin, and yea, y'all trash talk her articles which is so f'ing rude. So what? she loves the game, wow just wow my dudes. I'll pop up for her articles but outside that...
I have 4000+ hours in WoW and 1000+ in FFXIV. There is nothing you can teach me about either game and your wall of emo “stuff” isn’t about me in any way, shape or form.

We all like different things and we all have opinions, the problems start when we think our opinions are the best, or facts, because of “reasons.’

WHY would i care if a game is popular? Are gamers not using their own criteria when picking games to play or does this article somehow think that by telling people it is popular that might coerce the mindless into playing?

I played it for 6 months more than enough tiem to see all i neede to see.I also happen to be there from the start to the transition and felt the rise from the ashes had little to do with the rework and more about people love the FF IP and so took very little to convince them to come back.

I am not shallow minded,it takes actual PROOF to get me to come back to a game i felt was weak in many areas.

IDK what it is like now but housing was way too cumbersome to acquire, combat was weak and classes were weak which is sad considering it uses the best design ever, the "sub class" system.

Having said that, the game is still better than the popularity vote WOW and by a longshot it is like Wow 3.0 and still better than the rest in some areas.I still come back to the thread "popularity"is that why NEW players jumped in,quite possible, lots of shallow people out there that don't need much reason to do anything,it's firday let's get some beer mentality.WHY ...idk because it's Friday?

This site seems to be partnered with SE through an influencer, content creator program because i have seen hundreds of weak threads created as if a NEED to make a new one every single day or two. What can we expect next 5 reasons FFXIV is worth playing....starters guide,oh wait they just did that 10 years late to the party lmao.Like who makes a thread on an 11 year old game around "let's get started".If there isn't already a multitude of information including a WIKI then idk the internet must have been sleeping the past 11 years.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

What happened to those cuddly threads Victoria used to do, we would see a few posts from people playing FFXIV and a few from people like me who have been interested in trying out the game for a long time? Then BOOM! ;)

Good grief, you don't have to like Asmongold, hell you can hate him but you can't discredit him. Calling the 'wow guy' a trend follower is disingenuous.

If we're talking about the current sudden spike in interest, it is almost all Asmongold. His first stream had 988k viewers over a 10 hour period.

Either way retaining these people will be to the credit of FFXIV team and community though.

This is a very solid point to look at. When WoW Classic first landed, Asmongold did have a large portion of the streaming numbers for it.

I do think a large portion of the exodus is due to WoW's continuous systems required to do any new content without feeling arbitrarily hamstrung. For FFXIV, its good enough to do the newest raid content as long as you did the previous tier and even if you didn't, then you can buy/craft gear that would help you out to a large degree. You do not have to worry about arbitary points or levels in another system that has a portion of your power, which is also time-gated on when you can unlock it. Systems like that end up making it harder to try new classes in content and fights simply because you're at the whim of the time-gate in order to do so, unless you do everything up together. I will agree with some that these systems have felt a little less intrusive as iterations occur every expansion, but a lot of people who follow the Asmongold streamer are usually older wow players who remember when such systems didn't exist. Going to another game that doesn't have such barriers seems very tempting, even if only temporary.

They deserve it though. I'm not a FFXIV player, but they deserve it for the amazing comeback they pulled off. Imagine if WAR or AoC had their ARR / Heavensward. :(

FFXIV actualy sucks the longer you play it and it's issues start to surface.

#1 thing for me is the skill bloat. It's off the chart.
#2 the global cooldown is still shit slow.
#3 the main story (ARR) drags on for hours and hours and hours and hours. The cutscenes alone take more than 20 hours.
#4 you lose fly in the next xpansion. They like to fk you over just like wow. AND they slow your ground speed considerably! Your mount is barely faster than walking.
#5 You will never click your mouse so many times in your lifetime than you will in this game in a month. The pop ups and confirmation dialogs are in an overwhelming abundance.
#6 leveling is an absolute nightmare for alts.

The list could go on and on but I'm so sick of this game that I can't even complain anymore and need to move on and far away from this heap of shit.

White knight that shit all you want it won't change the truth.

You ever have a game turn you off right from the get go? That was Final Fantasy 14 for me.....I have heard others say that the tutorial is awful and the game gets much better after thatbut to me that first few minutes in a MMO is very important....If I am not immersed quickly then I am gone.

    It was 100% Asmongold.

    Halfmystic is just big salty.

Sure it wasn't every player. But Asmongold got most of those players to give FF14 a chance, and when friends saw their friends playing, then they tried it.

There's a reason theyre called influencers. People follow trends, people are more willing to try products vouched for by popular players, and people will play games on their friends recommendations.

    Simple human psychology.

So @halfmystic it's time to face the music, the online world won't be the same because of Twitch, and other influencer habitats from here on out.
