General: Stargate: E3 Preview

David "Zeb" Cook, the Lead System Designer for Stargate Worlds, spoke to Jon Wood from E3 about what we can expect now that the pen and paper legend and former City of Villains designer has done since he got his hands on Stargate Worlds.

The game itself is still in a very early stage of pre-production, and already it has generated a great deal of hype, being based as it is, on the extremely popular Stargate franchise. The flagship of the franchise, Stargate SG:1, has already run through its ninth season on the air and spawned a spinoff series, titled Stargate Atlantis.

Creating a game based on such a popular pre-existing idea can be a mixed blessing for developers. There is, of course, the recognition factor. After all, SG 1 wouldn’t still be on the air if it didn’t have an extensive fan base. That fan base alone could make the game a success. On the other side of things, an intellectual property like this comes with a certain amount to responsibility to those fans, as well as to fans of MMORPGs. In that vein, David says that they aim to “take what people want in MMORPGs and make them feel appropriate to Stargate.”

    This is the only show on TV that I watch like a freak. Now I dont have posters and stuff pasted on my walls, but I can tell you just about every detail on the show. it's probably the best show and most popular sc-fi series out there.

     Hence why I will look forward to this game. I am sure the budget for such a game will be large and it will be done right.

    What a conicidence, I was thinking of designing something and submitting it to them.

    Oh! How I wish I could be part of deciding the structure of this game.

    I have not missed a single ep of either show. I did how ever had the entire dvd collection until after my divorce. My wife got to keep the entire DVD collection. I had all the way up to season 6. Now I have to start my collection all over. I have the movie and season 1 again now.

    I would like to see this game to be thee ultimate MMORG. I think with a star map system like EVE Online, structure similar to SWG, could make this game rock.

    My idea on this game would roughly go like this;

    -You would start off choosing some kind of profession similar to SWG. Millatary, Scientist, Archeologist, Linguist, Artisan, Entertainer, etc..

    -I had two ideas on choosing species;
    *Either your species would be randomly generated to help balance all the species (unlike how on some servers on SWG you have more Imperial to Rebels)
    *You choose your own

    Note: on species though the number of types of species should depend on the time frame this game is set in, eg.. if set to current season then all species that have been visted (exceptions like Nox, Azguard, and a few others) should be made available. The reason for the Nox, Azguard, Ancients, Replicators and a few others is because of their far supperiority to other species. Unless their is a way to provide some kind of tactical advantage over them either throug missions as similar to those in the show where new technology is discovered through travel of planets, translatiosn, etc.

    -Missions - this is a tough one. I hat the fact in some games the same mission is given to every player even when creating a new player. Like MxO, for example at the start of a new character the missions where all the same even though they have been done by others and its story line basis. I think the missions should be in relevance to the current storyline if its to be used. So no matter when you start a new character you will not start with the same mission as you did with another. Their could be a race to complete the mission in some cases. So who ever completes it first wins in a manner of speaking.

    -All current technology depending on time frame of game should be accessable, but only to your profession or if you have the qualification. I like how the skill learning is done in EVE Online. It truely takes time to move from one skill level to another. I have one that will take approximately 9days for it to reach the next lvl. The time frame of learning could be increased by intelligience like in EVE Online.

    -I don't think everyone should be able to have an SGC team or be captain with out proper ranking (going through the ranks). Their really needs to be a focus on that, cause I am sure everyone will want their own SGC team and or be on SGC-1 (not going to happen, maybe possible through some kind of reward, tornament, like winning a wake on role in a tv show, you win a spot on SGC-1 for a week or so etc.)

    -Possibility of people hosting a server of their own that would house a planet created by them or the devs the host that a stargate would eventually lead to either by accident or research or discovery

    -This game truely needs a since of purpose.

    I would like more comments on this I would like in hopes that these ideas are taking serious and possibly implemented into the game.

    more to come, have to go for now

    I am usually dont get hopeful for any MMORPGs until I test them or play them but SG-1 is one game I will be hopeful for. My main concern is that with them basing the game of the fans that something bad wont happen where they make the game so unbalanced it destroys the fun factor. In example the human race was considered to be extremly primitive and in the very begining of things it would be considered luck to kill a jafaa. None the Less I will keep  this game until It arrives for testing.

    When i comes to loving all things Stargare i'm right there with ya man (points to user name and sig).

    Anyways i have very high hopes for this game, not in the way some Star Wars fans had for SWG back before it came out, but i just hope they can stay true to the source material unlike SWG (100000 jedi running around in the middle of the GCW?? cmon). It seems that the Dev company and MGM both are very dedicated to doing this right, we can only hope!

    Hallowed are the Ori.

    (go to edit and it messed up the quote, bah)
