NGS off to a disappointing start, Base is marvelous

So after nearly 20 years I've returned to the worlds of Phantasy Star Online and WOW! What a difference! The base game has grown so much from the Dreamcast "ver.2" days that I almost don't recognize it. It's truly a marvel to see what SEGA has added over the years.

That being said, I am not so thrilled about New Genesis. When I saw that Phantasy Star Online 2 was going to expand itself into an open world model I had rather high expectations. Considering the depth and complexity of Phantasy Star Online 2 base game, how could I not expect more than what NGS ended up delivering?

Not to discount the environments, the detailed character customization, or the fluid fighting animations but pretty textures does not a good game make. The skills are limited, the classes are limited, and the stability of the servers... well, let's just say that SEGA's ambitions might have been a little higher than what they technically could deliver.

I'm taking time out to write this because I have just been disconnected from the NGS side of the game for the seventh time in less than an hour, once was right in the middle of an Urgent Quest, which as anyone that's currently playing Phantasy Star Online knows are unpredictable in their frequency and appearance.  That's pretty frustrating for someone that monetarily supports the game through AC purchases and Premium Packs.

Right now New Genesis feels very much like an unstable Open Beta that you might have access to if you pre-ordered or signed up for in advance while the game was still in development.  That's not a good sign when the game is considered "Live" and they're accepting cash transactions through their cash shop.

If you're planning on taking Phantasy Star Online: New Genesis for a spin, I highly recommend not indulging SEGA by spending real life currency in their cash shops at this time. There are plenty of us "whales" doing that already and we're ready for a mutiny.

I think PSO2: NGS has a lot of promise but it desperately needs a technical overhaul for server stability and it most definitely needs more playable content. In its current form it's not much more than a Phantasy Star version of a chat room with fully rendered 3D avatars.  Second Life comes to mind but more crash-y.

I don't like NG . I only play the base game but I've taken a break playing something else now.
