Yeah if you want information I'd just watch the monthly live streams. This is a very open and transparent game development. TOO open and transparent I think.
As far as Intrepid's financial situation, I have no idea. I don't think private companies are obligated to release information about their finances. But they are clearly hiring and acquiring talent, as evidenced by this latest acquisition and all the recent outreach they've done on twitter.
If there is one word I never want to hear in combination with mmorpg design, it is "narrative".
There is more to MMORPG's, indeed games than drawing some trees and working out the animations.
Absolutely true. Which is why I asked if this is a new position or if he replaced someone. The Narrative should influence the design of locations, dungeons, etc... I hope someone was in charge of this prior to the new guy...
IS has the funds to add more staff but they have made sure they only add talented staff that fits their design philosophy. My guess is this was an addition and wont be the last.
Would love to see a link to information to validate your assertion.
If you took the time to watch they monthly dev streams. You would be I the know if you did I'm done doing the foot work of time stamping videos. You can find all the info on their official YouTube channel. You have about 20+ hrs to get caught up
So there are no numbers...

If you close your eyes a Developer will hold story time. Caspien used to do that with his fans too. I always prefer numbers.

I am pleased to even see they have a lead writer/ narrative designer, story led MMORPG's are becoming a theme of the past. He is also a very solid name for the position. Like Slapshot said though who did he replace? It would be rather late in development to add a lead writer surely, you need broad strokes in that creative direction from the start?
I don't think AoC will suddenly become a narrative driven MMORPG. Much more likely they need someone to make sure that the lore is coherent so that characters and equipment fit into the game world or that what already exists is adjusted to fit.
Or he is working on the first paid dlc
Well, Ashes was always going to have story and narrative, it was never going to be just a purely sandbox & PVP game. They said this from the get-go, and to the best of our knowledge based off what we were told early on, Jeff & Steven were were in charge of writing and developing that narrative which we can presume is now being handed off to the person they just hired. I very much doubt they are working on the first paid DLC/Expansion right now. The game has quests, those quests have stories, and there will be an overarching narrative going on in the world on some level too. That's what this guy is and will be doing.
As for him working remotely, a lot of writing leads are working from home, that's not even new because of the pandemic either, though that certainly added to it. Intrepid has been moving into a new office space that was being built prior to the pandemic, and they began moving people in from their homes in July, the last update they gave on this was that they were about 70% moved in.
They have a long way to go in the games development so I don't see any reason why they should say when they are going to launch right now. They long ago admitted that 2019 window was enormously unrealistic, and aren't going to give any final release date estimates until they're ready to do so, which I personally think is better than continually throwing darts at different dates and not meeting them which is what many studios already do, CF or not.
They have a solid community base that has not stopped buying cosmetics. IS has not stopped hiring the right people when they have come along. No where did I say they have an endless cash flow. IS has kept up with upgrading tech and staff when it was smart to do so. There has been a steady progression to this studio. Its been impressive to watch and they do mention often they are looking to always hire the right people. There has been no signs that this is untrue.
The right people? As if there are companies that are trying to hire the wrong people? What nonsense, you keep saying this as if it actually means something.

So in other words, you are saying you believe these devs are so inept they are incapable of making a realistic projection that they can actually meet or deliver early? So you would rather put your head in the sand rather than have them lie to you again.
I have an alternate view, it tells me the answer is so bad they don't want anyone to know the truth.
They have a long way to go in the games development so I don't see any reason why they should say when they are going to launch right now.
Maybe because they gave dates when they took people's money based on those dates? And as far as I know they aren't giving it back? Or are they?
I mean, people gave their money because they wanted to support the project. I doubt very many people were giving their money based off seeing a date that was obviously estimated given the fact the game had barely entered full development with a team of 15 people at that point and by now anybody who knows anything about game development, especially for this genre ought to know it takes more than a year or two to develop. Also, refunds were available and as far as I know probably still are.

I have an alternate view, it tells me the answer is so bad they don't want anyone to know the truth.
In other words, I am saying they could give an estimate that will probably turn out to be incorrect just like almost every other game studio out there, or they can wait until they're further along in development to do that. It has nothing to do with ineptitude, game development takes a long time, period. Game development hits unforeseeable obstacles that can dramatically impact any estimated release window, we've seen it time and time again for years even from big AAA studios that are staffed to the teeth with the supposed "best in the business". I personally don't enjoy having release dates given and then pushed back repeatedly, but it's something that happens constantly in this industry. You are entitled to your conspiratorial view that everything is so bad and going terribly over there and being covered up. I personally just find it hard to believe that the people they've been pulling from major studios on highly successful games would ever join this studio if things were going poorly. It's also not like we haven't seen the game in action yet, as they've got a functioning game in early alpha testing already.
They have a long way to go in the games development so I don't see any reason why they should say when they are going to launch right now.

And if you think the same amount of money would have been raised during the Kickstarter if the date had said 2024 release vs 2017 then... I think that's extraordinarily unlikely.
But it is irrelevant. You said you did not "see any reason why they should say when they are going to launch". I think it's the LEAST they can do to a customer they sold a product to, delayed by years, and won't refund the cash (which would be the ideal solution).

I think all of the CF MMOs need to give a ballpark launch year, for example AoC may say something like "anything up to five years". But that is being genuine about how potentially long it could take, even if they only think it will take three.
They have a long way to go in the games development so I don't see any reason why they should say when they are going to launch right now.

I just want consistency. I'm 100000% fine if a company never gives a release date and says "It'll be done when it's ready". But you can't take people's money based on a date, literally delay a game by years and years, not allow refunds, and say "We don't have to tell you when you will get your product".
Well, I guess they CAN do that as it is what they are doing (and most other Crowdfunded games)... but it's bullshit IMHO.

The right people? As if there are companies that are trying to hire the wrong people? What nonsense, you keep saying this as if it actually means something.
If you dont know what that means, let me use simple English. They are being selective and no, not all companies are.
I agree with Slapshot in that at all times I'd like to see at least an ESTIMATE of when the game is going to be released. It can be heavily emphasized that it's only an estimate and not only subject to change but subject to drastic change. It should be a range instead of a date, as in 1-3 years, 2-4 years etc.
At the same time I understand devs not wanting to give answers to things that they don't actually know the answer to. I'm not freaking out about it either way, the games going to come when it comes. But just on a personal opinion level, I'd like at least some kind of broad estimated range at all times.
And Brainy yes there are right and wrong people for individual companies. Some people fit in better with a companies culture, philosophy, vision and needed experience than others.
Lastly on the subject of refunds, anyone who donates money on Kickstarter needs to realize there is always a chance that that money is lost for good. You donate at your own risk, always. Kickstarter itself does not guarantee refunds on anything. You are subject to the game company's policy and if it doesn't go your way, your only recourse is to sue. There's almost always fine print that goes against you, it's your job to do your homework and read all of that BEFORE you donate. And only donate an amount you can stand losing.
All of that said, if you donated to Ashes you're in good hands. The game is coming. I don't know when exactly, but it's going to launch. Of course nothing is 100%, but being in the alpha myself, I can confidently say the game is going to make it to launch.
But in all seriousness-they should start at LEAST giving out "Not Before" dates. Someone who paid hundreds of dollars to these guys and expected a game in 2018/2019... should be given the basic courtesy of knowing whether 2022 is realistic, or 23... or 24... Or give the people back their money.
The problem is that all these Crowdfunded games keep dangling the carrot in front of fans, pretending the game is closer than it is, in order to generate more sales.
This one was SUPPOSED to be different. Heck we even had streamers (who of course are paid real cash for referrals) making slides mocking other games for their delays. People who questioned the validity of 2018, 2019, 2021 release dates were mocked... That slide I linked earlier was captured from one such streamer who went out of his way to tout Intrepid's ability to "overdeliver and under promise"
When I see "Sr Narrative Designer" hired I immediately think:
A) Who did he replace? As I assume work was being done on this already B ) If this guy is going to make an actual impact it means that release is literally YEARS away C) If it's going to release in the short to mid future, then this hire really can't impact that launch very much
Intrepid isn't alone here. As I said... all these Crowdfunded games cross the line (IMHO) by making customers believe things are much more complete than they really are... in order to get them to hand over their money. But because other people do it to, does not make it OK to follow suit. It just makes it sad.

Senior roles aren't unique like Lead roles are. There are usually multiple people in the different Senior roles, whereas there is only 1 person in each Lead role. You can see them hiring tons of people for Senior positions by looking at their careers page. https://intrepidstudios.com/careers

You misread what I said, what I said is what companies are looking to hire the WRONG people (on purpose)? I am not disputing companies are selective. How is looking for the right person any different than what every other company that is looking to hire someone is doing?
Its just a stupid statement to be honest, because it gives no information other than they are willing to hire.

Oh ok I think I see what you mean Brainy, kinda. The whole thing is a non issue though. Intrepid, like many companies is on the the hunt for the "right" people to hire. Industry to industry the connotation of that probably changes some. It's harder to hire the right people in certain industries versus others, "right" is a much broader or narrower definition for some companies versus others etc.
That was just one sentence in Valentina's post where she was describing Intrepid's current situation. And you took issue with it. I don't see the issue with the sentence. But whatever, don't care, nonissue to me heh.

Anyone know why he got banned?
Hating on a game is not a bannable offence on this forums AFIK.

Senior roles aren't unique like Lead roles are. There are usually multiple people in the different Senior roles, whereas there is only 1 person in each Lead role. You can see them hiring tons of people for Senior positions by looking at their careers page. https://intrepidstudios.com/careers
Yes, the game is still years away from release. Don't expect it before 2024.
