So when New world shuts down it'll be what, 5 for 5? How many game titles have they canceled/had to shut down now? 4, 5?

    Oh, they are shutting down?

    Good to know.
Yes, the game will definitely shut down sometime in the next century or so.  Probably.

But UO will still be running :)

The question now is what do they mean by "available"?

let me copy paste from [twitter]().

"You will be able to move your character to any servers that **are available at the time** we make transfers available. Hope that helps"

Meaning that there will be available servers and unavailable servers, and currently jam packed server is probably the latter.

it's the normal thing for most mmorpg, the free transfer usually offered towards High -> lower pop. And i can see it happening in NW as well as they specifically says "available at the time". So there will be Unavailable one and people cant go there

I heard they're increasing the server sizes to 10k now out of the blue. Shouldn't they tested this during the open beta?

Of course they should be blamed. They knew roughly how many people pre ordered the game. There's no way all these people bought it today.

I really don't understand why gaming companies are hanging onto outdated launch methods. There have been ways to avoid this for a long time now. Create overflow servers to allow people to play and when a spot opens up give them a message to move over to the server by clicking the message or have it do it automatically. I mean the amount of servers they have is ridiculous to begin with, as in more than I have seen a game launch with. The issue though I believe is they put a absurd low cap on servers also. Really wondering who they have in charge of the tech side of this one because they are straight up an idiot.
  • AkulasAkulas Member RarePosts: 3,029
That annoying thing that phases everyone out and you get the same gameplay experience whether there is 1 or 1000 people. They should do that then everyone can get in. Then turn it off when the numbers settle down.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

For some reason, this makes me think of that scene in World War Z where the zombies make a wall out of themselves by climbing over each out just to get in.

And they added 28 servers this evening to NA East, and 16-20 earlier today, so blame them for not having the extra 40+ they put up today? Interesting take......

Don't think I've ever seen a company respond quite as quickly by almost doubling the server capacity in less than 24 hours for NA East...not sure what they did for the rest of the world.

So you expected Amazon to have a better launch than 99% of every other MMO? Interesting standard...and not arguing with you.

They did drop a ton of new servers, and without instancing technology, there is no way a server is big enough to handle that many people...so is it design or their tech side you feel is at fault?

The tech is in place.  They have global account name locks and server groups within which servers can be merged in the future.

So they can spin up a ton more servers to reduce queue times and then merge them later on, when the game settles down.

Why they left the European players hanging high and dry with horrific queue times the entire day, but were quick to double the server numbers for NA East when the time came, would be a better question to ask Amazon at this point?!

PS. You cannot compare today with 10-20 years ago, as at that time most MMO developers had to set up their own data centers (crazy expensive) and server hardware being precious and expensive. So it was much harder to anticipate needed server hardware and when you made a mistake (WoW in 2004) it would then take at least 1-2 weeks to order new hardware, roll it into the data center, spin it up and deploy the new game servers.

Today it's totally different, with Amazon being the largest hosting provider on the planet and AWS having the capability to scale up/out servers instantly.
Which they in fact perfectly demonstrated in NA East.

They had all these servers available at the start but held them back.  I personally think these games do it on purpose to create hype for their game.  I know it might seem counter intuitive to some, but having lines early for a game hypes the game to people who normally don't follow launches.  All these press releases about how many people trying to play but couldn't.

For every person that quits over this, 30 more will be attracted, saying things like "OMG every loves this game, I must check it out".

I hate that it works this way, but unfortunately it does.

In reverse if you over anticipate and do like Crowfall and expect 500k but get 2k on day one, watch your player base just evaporate.  No queues yet no players either.  So they got negative hype.

Now that Amazon has their positive hype, they will now fix the problem they created very quickly you watch.

I feel bad for those that took off but were stuck in queue.  I luckily started early, I know I didn't log out all day, stayed in game even during breaks just to avoid the 3k queue.  I had friends that logged in during early prime time, and never got to play until everyone went to bed.

My experience playing so far, 10k would break the quests and crafting... it would be a nightmare... crafting is so important and their are fixed nodes for materials.

Wow Amazon is flat out lying they did not have 1 million during open beta and they did not have 700k+ logged on they had 30k logged on with 600k+ sitting in queue for 3 or more hours.

They need to stop lying and start apologizing.

They totally dropped the ball and they did not have a fraction of the servers they should have had just based of even a fraction of their sales numbers.

This kind of launch may have been acceptable 20 years ago but this is 2021 and it is past time for new game developers to start learning something from the glaring failures of their predecessors rather than repeating the same mistakes over and over.

By 12 noon EST Amazon tweeted they were adding more servers, servers they own and already had ready to spin up it would be another 5 hours before they made any attempt to spin up the new servers.

They deserve no atta boy or good jobs for that total and complete failure.

I have this image in my head every time you hear of the latest mess up in MMO development from AAA to CF, there is a developers meeting and one guy puts his hand up and says "Shouldn't we check out MMO gaming history to see what happened in the past and how that could pan out?". There is a resounding chorus of "No!" and the team carries on regardless.

I knew I was going to be gone most of yesterday. Leaving in a bit and will be gone at least 2 days. So I won't be able to "play" really right now.

The only thing that sucks is I have this one name I've been using since the 90's. If not obvious it's not a common name and I have never had a problem getting that character name. I would always see complaints from people not being able to get names. Like I play WoW Classic and Classic TBC for a bit and as usual saw it there. Got my name no problem.

Name was gone instantly for New World.

No it's not a big deal. However, it was a way that people I played games with over the years and lost touch with... would find me. Then again I think I had more interest in posting this... than I do in actually playing the game.

The server queues are a nightmare... but had no wide scale crashes.  My game didn't crash once.

How many launches are plagued just by the launcher and server stability?

I'm getting decent FPS at max settings in the busiest settlements (40-70fps... never dipped to slow motion / slide show).  I'd get much higher if I toned down my settings.

You have to thank improved server and scaling technology for that compared to 10-20 years ago.

There were so many more constraints on resources 10-20 years ago when CPU, RAM and Storage were expensive as hell.

Yup, exactly! This should have been tested prior to launch no afterwards.

Upping the server capacity is going to make certain tasks really frustrating (we also don't know if they can handle that many people in the same area especially for those that want to pvp).

Yeah but...they "failed" to perfectly predict the future and didn't resolve the capacity problem "instantly", under 24 hours just isn't good enough for the instant gratification folks. ;)

Yes pick most populated servers and cry why you cant play. All I see is little bitches complaining. Me and my friends went for EU server that had 10 people in queue and 1k at peak hours and played game with no issues at all.

Oh wow. You went to a different region server, when those people were lying at bed and didn't experience any queues.

    Wow what an insight! /facepalm.

EU players did not had any choice yesterday and ALL servers had horrible queues ALL day EU time. No servers were added.

Only during NA East launch prime time they suddenly managed to double the capacity in that region within a matter of hours. /shrug

I think the difference might be character names are global in New World and not just server specific as they were in earlier times.

If so that's why your name vanished so quickly.

I recall in LotRO at launch logging into like every available server and creating placeholder characters for my five or so favorite names on each one.

Felt bad about that later on since I quit within a month or so, locking those names up forever, well at least until I think they one day announced recovering unused names many years afterwards.

Oh I think they do, and decide to give players that "old school experience" they are always clamoring for and intentionally add the sins of the past.

I mean they have to be willfully doing so right, because there's no way they could be so woefully ignorant of previous mistakes and solutions employed over the years to resolve them.

Surprised so many are getting this game. Sounded like it would be DOA just a couple months ago from all the bad rating you would hear and read everywhere.

So all the launch issues aside...got to give them credit for putting out a game that people seem to enjoy after all the crap that was dumped on the title, dev's and game company not that long ago.

See if it will make it past the 90 day curse on many games that just seem to wither away after launch. Either way, hope they got a lot of experience out of the process of everything and can put some decent games together from the game company.
