Esports in general is a waste of my time. I would much rather be playing the games myself then watching someone else do it for me. While I can appreciate that others feel it is entertaining to watch some esports, it is just not for me.

I'm not really interested in the whole "e-sport" thing but I do very much enjoy watching vidoes of Dark Souls invasions and watching players battle.

In a sense that is a kind of esport.

Nope. Have no interest in it. I don't even watch sports on TV except for maybe Alpine Skiing.

I didn't even know that MMO esports were a thing. I thought that "MMORPG" and "esports" were mutually exclusive. MMORPGs are based so heavily on long-term progression, while any sort of long-term progression at all completely breaks esports.

I suppose that something like the Guild Wars approach could work for esports, but at that point, what you've really got is a PVP arena combat, not an MMORPG.

Nope no interest in them. I also have no interest in watching regular sports either. I have played many sports over my life and enjoyed them immensely but never have had a desire to just sit and watch it. If I am in a baseball mood I will go out and play baseball. If I am in a FPS mood I will go load up and play.

    E-sports ruined WoW for me
  • UngoodUngood Member LegendaryPosts: 7,534
I liked them when it is a game of skill of the players, prime example of this was Fortnight, I sucked at playing the game, but, Watching some of those streamers play was like watching wizards dual in real time, just the skill and talent they have to manipulate the game around them, was awe striking.

But, when it comes to MMO's, nah. They just don't have that sense of thrill.

I would say MMO's are like the Curling of the Sports world.

Nope. The entire concept of it is stupid to me. But I don't watch people streaming games either. Call me crazy...but I rather play games than watch others play them.

    No, not interested.

Admittedly, I can't say I've ever come across any MMO e-sports before, I wasn't aware it was even a thing. I mean, I know plenty of MMOs include PvP arenas and I do enjoy them. I know some of them also include ranked modes. But I've never considered them e-sports.

I don't think I could ever grow to enjoy e-sports from a spectators point of view. I dont watch many sports in real life, I just get very bored with most of them, or frustrated with others. I do enjoy watching F1, as well as a bunch of extreme sports, but even then I can sometimes grow bored.

As a participant, I just don't enjoy any of the games that have made it onto the e-sports scene. If there was a game that I enjoyed, then I'd be happy to participate for as long as it remained fun to play. But, the sort of games I really enjoy are more like chess (strategic) or creative (like builders and sims) and so couldn't be called sports.

No, because the commentators always seem to make eSports appear or seem more interesting then it really is, when in reality it's comically absurd and 100% ad/sponsor-driven.

Not I, only esports I watch are fighting games and League of Legends.

World firsts, arenas and dungeon races in MMO esports aren't something that interest me... but to be fair I've never tried. Maybe I could like it if I gave it a go?

I don't think MMO/MMORPGs are set up in a way that's good for viewing in esports, based on my own point of view.

So what I'm drawing from my answer and subsequent reflection is: I should try it before I bin it  :p

MMOs in general don't offer competitive enviroment (there are exceptions ofc) unlike fighting games, mobas, FPS. Friends of mine like watching MDI, probably because they like mythic dungeons themselves and see an opportunity to learn and improve.

For me personally i'm in "i'd rather play games myself" camp, but since streaming kinda booming this days guess it's just personal thing.

I mean they spend a lot of time training as a team and get paid. Not sure if its term "athlete" that is unnerving for you, but it is a full-time job at the very least.
  • HengistHengist Member RarePosts: 1,315
    Zero interest at all.

For me, one of the key components to playing a game, and an MMORPG especially, is the memories that I make from it. E-Sports doesn't offer that in the least, as watching someone else play doesn't do a thing to make a memory, or a game special.

If I'm watching sports, its usually with friends (unless it's F1..) but then it's who I'm with, and the memories that are made are because of the people, not quite so much the game. As in we may all recall some great play a team made, but it's burned into our mind because we were hanging out.

So no....e-sports don't do a thing for me. No emotional involvement, and absolutely nothing I can relate to about the event, the players, and so on. I know it's just me, and other's can, but...doesn't work for me.

They absolutely are pro-athletes or maybe better to call them pro-e-athletes. If you are on a pro LoL team you are living in the same house with your team, your food is prepared for you, you are expected to work out in your off time and you are expected to practice as much if not more than a NFL player practices throughout the week. And the kicker, they are making serious money doing it. So ya, if that is not a professional I don't know what is.
  • LuidenLuiden Member RarePosts: 337
League of Legends is really the only esport worth watching, hence why it's the most popular. Even if you aren't good at the game you can enjoy and follow what is going on and even learn to make you a better player. I don't know if it will ever make it to mainstream but it has the best chance.

The other formats just don't make sense. Fighting games don't have enough depth to hold an audience, FPS games are too twitchy for normal human beings to follow. MMO's are boring as hell to watch, mechanical based games like Starcraft had a good following, the problem is those games aren't very strategic, wont hold an audience.
