MMORPGs, especially with their origins in text-based MUD games, aren't always associated with the bleeding edge of graphical fidelity when talking about the greater games industry. Yet in recent years, realistic graphics have been more and more at the forefront. But Bradford wonders: to the average MMORPG fan, how important are those graphics?

Art design matters to me. If I don't like the art design i won't play the game.

I would say it matters more to me than game play as I'm looking for an immersive experience, one that inspires the imagination..

Graphics are important, but no where near as important as the games mechanics or progression loops. MMORPGs I think have the most leeway when it comes to graphics out of any type of video game, if you had a good world with verisimilitude then your graphics do not need to be any type of record setting, but they also can't be completely trash.

It depends. Do they hit that "good enough" threshold? I don't expect to have my mind blown, but I also don't want to play something that is ugly as shit like Runescape or Champions of Regnum.

..IMO.. The better MMORPGS on the market have the lesser graphics , Devs need to focus on better more in depth systems .. The " Oooohh" so pretty only lasts so long its systems that get players to stick around .  Looking at you NW

I agree that ambiance is the most important. If the art style is consistent and good, and the graphics hold together, then the pixel count is less important.

What matters is the "suspension of disbelief".

Fortnite, for example, has decent graphics that are kind of cartoony. But it works. LoTRO still looks pretty good after all these years, because the art direction is good.

Graphics are important though. I probably can't play any 2-d isometric games anymore, I want 3-d.

I think what is the most important thing for me is whether the world clicks for me. Whether when I am playing I feel like I am part of the world. Does not not have to have bleeding edge graphics to get that feeling. Everquest manages it with 1999 graphics.

It is a very hard thing to achieve even when you have very good graphics the world can still fail to draw you in. There has to be a perfect storm of character, skills, atmosphere, sounds, story, feeling, vastness and gravitas that makes one believe they are no longer just playing but experiencing something that is worth playing. That is hard to get. It does not just depend on one thing like graphics.

@blueturtle13 is correct that Valheim does it. There you  actually feel terrified when you're outside without a shelter when night falls. It is not one thing it was the complete experience that causes one to get that fear.

Graphic's don't matter as much as the game does.  Just because it's all Shiny & New, doesn't make it good.

Also there's some art styles I stay away from as I just don't like them.

    It's #1 for me.

For the longest time WoW was good enough and the cartoonish world worked, until BDO came along. Alas, BDO is less of a RPG for a PVE fan so I only login for the occasional eyegasm and I'm out again.

Now I cannot help but look at other titles like LOTRO, SWTOR, GW2 and even some of the latest ones out and think, if they had the same level of detail and graphics I would never stop playing.

FFXIV has a good balance but the playstyle isn't for me and I'm back to square one waiting for a AAA title that marries graphics with depth.

Graphics should not matter, gameplay is all. But I find it far easier to say that than live by it.

It does some degree. I mean I am fine with low poly or cartoonish graphics, but gameplay then has to make up that. But for sure I am not going to play a MMORPG with graphics that was drawn by child even tho if gameplay is more than decent. And this goes vica vera. For example NW would have better graphics than WoW, but I'd rather play WoW because it has better gameplay.

Graphics matter to me to a certain extent. They are a single cog in the wheel. Immersion is what I'm looking for and as said so well above me its the ambiance, ie the lighting, sound and bring it together so it *feels* natural and not disjointed or clumsy. Being able to give someone a feeling artificially is quite a skill.

I agree that Valhiem is a great example of good ambiance with lower count graphics. A game doesn't have to be High Definition to look, sound and feel good.

    imho

When did Valheim become an MMORPG , which is what the article is about , also the AI in Valheim is pretty immersion breaking , I mean the fucking deer are dumb as rocks, along with most of the content , Its really immersion breaking for me when the AI is just  that terrible across the game like it is in Valheim ..

I must confess that I love high graphic quality. However by trying Elyon, I realized that as long it is good enough... But sorry i never could MUD with @ as players.

    I always needed graphics:

Graphics to me are important but not the most important thing. Gameplay and lore are way more important in an MMO than graphics but good graphics really helps with immersion.

I think they just have to work with how the game is presented to make it feel okay to play. I'm fine with Old School Rune Scape because it feels like it should with those graphics. Even games like Project Gorgon where most people complain about the looks, have a good enough balance of atmosphere and world to make it feel good to play even while looking like it was from 2003. Hell I even enjoyed RPGMO which has no animations and just pictures moving around so maybe I don't care about graphics.

Aesthetics elicit feelings of happiness. We appreciate beauty. We crave it. We demand it. We desire it. Graphics are very helpful in achieving that. There is no denying it.

Valhiem is not a mmorpg, people we're using its ambiance and simple graphics as an example and nothing more as far as I could tell.

    Of course graphics matter.

The better questions is are they a priority?

    For me, not anymore.

Theres maybe 5 MMOs I wouldnt play because of graphics, if that......UO is too dated for me now....Im not a fan of the blocky style graphics like Trove has so thsoe kind of games are out, but in general the graphics are not a major factor...gameplay is much more important.

I am sorry my use of Valheim's immersion was off topic. I could have/ should have said perhaps Secret World or Dungeon and Dragons Online.
    Sorry to trigger

Immersion matters for me. Graphics is a tool that can enhance or detract from immersion, if not so bad that it outright breaks the experience.

Atm New world is a game that gets the job done in a way that makes me play it with a joy, and overlook a lot of its rough edges and dated mechanics.

Watching a game like Ashes of Creation in making , I am general worried about what I perceive as a lack coherent aesthetic direction. I fear for my ability to really immerse in that, even though every individual part is very detailed.
