Dwarves. Not the Firstborn, or the Secondborn of Illuvatar, but rather the red-headed stepchildren of Middle-earth. This is a race that, admittedly, Bradford hasn't spent too much time thinking about in the fourteen years he's run around The Lord of the Rings Online. But prepping for Gundabad has made him quite upset he's slept on the wonderful stories Standing Stone Games has written for this solemn race.

This is one of the reasons that LOTRO remains a mainstay in my MMORPG stable, and never gets uninstalled. I've played it yearly for 3-6 months a year since launch, and will do so until they sunset the game. There is such an amazing depth of content available, and they do an excellent job with storylines (if stumbling a bit here and there with mechanics, aging, and the like). Looking forward to Gundabad!

This is a nice encapsulation of what Dwarven history means to the Dwarves if you are roleplaying one. Dwarves have always interested me the most in Tolkein but there is far less said about them than Elves and Men. Lotro did a great job of establishing theme and story for all the races, I think the best job in any MMO I have seen. But to be fair to other MMOs they didn't have Tolkien to draw on.

Having said that, considering there was less to draw on for Dwarves you never felt short chained playing one in the game, so that's down to great work by Turbine as far as I am concerned.

Part of the issue that Joseph is talking about is that you have too much to do, imagine that a MMORPG where you have too much to do, crazy right? That's how they used to make them, games you could live in if you wanted to; we have moved so far from that with todays releases I doubt we will see their like again.

That's one of the reasons my brother and I keep coming back to this game, year after year. We NEVER run out of things to do, despite having played this since launch. It's downright amazing, all things considered.

Well dammit Bradford, you've gone and pushed my alt-itis button! Now I'll have to make a dwarf in LOTRO, probably a champ.

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

Only real class is a Hunter. The rest are just viable options for crafting alts.

I've always played pet classes, like Captain or Lore Master.

Now I'm gonna have to play a Dwarven Champ, sigh, :)

Great article I am really enjoying what seems to be a resurgence of lotro stuff here on the website. I made a dwarf brawler who loves to farm and cook. The Stout Axe intro is really good.

I really regret Sleeping with that Dwarven Hooker , on a drunken night in Bree , very irritating rash ever since..

I've been told there is a Hobbit in Staddle with an ointment that will work , only catch there is the Hobbit wants to apply it twice daily.

On another note LOTRO is truly an amazing experience running a couple classes thru. I recommend turning off names  and turning off (show enemy) on radar (red dots) ,these 2 things make the world much more immersive and fun, and will add to the challenge..

That's the good news , bad news is End game is complete utter shit show that is like a dose of fucking cancer that needs to die ..

Trying a Beoring for the first time.
Makes me sad I gotta do 140 levels to get him to the Ettenmoors - although the journey will be fun.

Beorning is a superb combination of race and class. Made even me to think like Beorning. Actually read quest texts. Yes, I avoid killing animals while on Beorning and am really unhappy when Beorns must kill animal, especially Bear. Yes, I am bloodthirsty Goblin hater.  Yes, "your forest is your life", as my bio says. And yeap, I do wait when I could return to my home lodge with these huuuge bees around. To smash more Goblins, you know...
If I may advice: do take your time to read racial quest texts. Lots of history and even tragedies will unfold.
If you are on Laurelin, feel free to ask me for help, should you need one.

^--- community is much better by far, as well.
I think partly that content helps maintain the community. The community obviously formed for a number of reasons but the games content gives a feeling of purpose and the sensation that you have arrived. Most new MMOs make you feel like a rush hour commuter, in Lotro you are already at work, play and home.

I really love the lore in this game. I am so tempted to return and play it after reading this.

As much as I have enjoyed the journey in LOTRO , after 16 years 7 toons to max level. 3 top raiding . With the recent LI debacle and how the game is heavy p2w , I won't be going back ..

But there is a lot of fun for new and/or players that are not interested in end game.

It means alot , in end game if you plan on raiding , you will not get a spot , if you dont pay .. Others will , and move ahead of you

Dwarf Guardian was my first alt, Dwarf Champion my second.

I certainly enjoyed the classes and the lore, but I do remember an awful lot of running around the starter area in comparison to humans and hobbits. I'm sure things are easier these days, but back when u didn't get a horse til 35, all that running was frustrating!

The beards made it worth it though!

As for going back, that won't happen unless they do a proper vanilla / SoA server. I have no interest in the modern game, but the original game was amazing, I'd subscribe to that game in a heart beat!

I was in closed beta, and then bought a lifetime sub when LoTRO launched. Best money I ever spent.

I never played WoW, LoTRO is my WoW-clone.

Like mentioned above, put the graphics on high and turn off nameplates.
