Yeah was really looking forward to it, counting down the days.

But its only two weeks so definitely better than something like a month or two.

yoshida crying on stream was bizarre
im surprised how much ffxiv has changed, they never had a live english translator, and the other guy never spoke english before, i guess the wow audience really impacted this game

Seeing Anima in that trailer got me even more hyped for this expansion. I guess I can play for FF10 until then.

A developer having emotions is not bizarre. He is very passionate about the game and cares a lot. They have had a live translator for a long time like...a couple years. Not sure what you are even talking about. WoW has nothing to do with it.

Yep, this is just the way he's presented himself since the beginning when he took over the FFXIV team.

The first time i saw him cry was he was telling the story of the FFXIV 1.0 player he ran into on the train on his way to the SE offices; and the player hugged him and thanked him for what he was doing for the game.

2nd time i saw him cry was during this years digital fanfest, when he was talking about Soken's battle with cancer.

So the 67th live letter would be the 3rd time i saw him tear up on camera.

I don't know how to explain it, but i find the quality of the type of human-being Yoshi P is to be highly prized.

    Any other MMO is delayed...
"Well, it sucks. But, better to delay it if it will help the game"... etc.

    FFXIV is delayed...
"Yoshida cried! He cares so much!!!"

Yeah, he's clearly realized that crying about things is one of the easiest ways to keep his fans loyal. "Look how much he cares!! He cries!! Best MMO Director ever!!"

Along with struggle-brags, like "We didn't anticipate how popular it would be!", to obscure the fact that they screwed up (repeatedly in the case of housing), crying seems to be becoming Yoshida's favorite PR tactic. And the fans eat it up. Every single time.

Crying during the moment when Soken discusses having cancer, and continuing to work.. Yes. 100% Understandable. That's human beings dealing with very real friendships, personal connections and situations.

Getting emotional at the release of FFXIV after the marathon that was rebuilding an entire MMO from the ground up, and all the pressure that came with it. Yes. Understandable.

But to cry because of a 2 week delay of a video game expansion? No. That's ridiculous. And the message you all send every time you gush over it, is "it doesn't matter how they screw up... Yoshida cried about it. So he cares and all is forgiven".

The second-hand embarassment this game produces is remarkable.

Considering the delay is only two weeks I think the crying may have been a bit faux to be honest. But its his 'baby' so who knows?

I think its fair to let emotions get the best of you, especially if you're overworked and who knows what kind of other backlash he could be dealing with. I saw the runescape stream when they had all those people locked out of the game, and one of the devs cried on stream then too.

I don't pretend to know what someone might be going through at those exact moments. I'm not mad at them for it, and I think it would be a little weird if someone is mad at them for emotions they probably don't understand.

I certainly don't see why anyone should get angry (emotional) about someone being emotional. :)

I don't understand people reaching for "possible reasons" to validate someone would be getting emotional over a 2 week delay announcement, as though it's some catastrophic thing. Especially when talking about FFXIV's history.

I prefer to not make it more than it is. It's not that deep.

Yoshida getting emotional, nevermind crying, when ever there's even a slight setback in the game gets more suspect every time he does it.

A 2 week delay for an expansion in a game - that's otherwise perfectly playable in the meantime - is not a huge deal. Delays happen *all the time* in MMORPGs - sometimes for months. It's common across gaming in general. It's not some weird, alien concept. Not even for SE. Yoshida is a seasoned game dev. He knows this intimately.

What's unique here, is how ready and eager FFXIV fans are to forgive and explain away any and all missteps. Especially if Yoshida turns on the tear ducts. Further, they turn around and praise him for it. FFXIV fans are determined to hold anything and everything about FFXIV above criticism, and I'm sure he's noticed.

Let's remember, he's also the guy who's convcinced millions of people that unsubbing for months between major updates (unless you're a house owner!) is "encouraged and intended". Meanwhile, it's a typical and inevitable situation in any themepark MMO, because devs can not produce content as fast as players consume it. In other words: People are going to unsub from FFXIV between major updates whether he "encourages" it or not.

Thing is, it's usually seen as a negative for a title, and developers are on the defensive about it. So, Yoshida decides to twist it into a positive, as though it's something he encourages, so he doesn't have to be on the defensive, and maintains the "good guy Yoshida" image. If he didn't do that, I wouldn't be surprised if he cried about it each time. And the fans would eat it up.

    So...

I still hold he's realized turning on the tears is a great PR move as it disarms his fans and gets them on his side for an otherwise negative situation.

But, if it's legit, and not forced to keep the fans on his side... then the fact that he's never shed even a single tear for the on-going, repeat trainwreck that is housing is telling.

One thing I'll give Yoshida credit for... he's clever with the PR spin and keeping the fans loyal.
