New World (and other titles with "fake" full screen) and nVidia Image Scaling

Yes, it is possible. And it looks awesome.
I used to play NW in 1440p because my 2070 SUPER was slowing down too much with everything maxed out at 2160p.
Now I play in 1440p "Image Scaled" to 4K and it looks gorgeous.

How to do it (works with any "fake full screen", aka "window borderless" game) :

Simply set your Desktop to the image scaling resolution.

In my case:

And then :

Et voila ! All your "borderless windowed" games will be upscaled to the native resolution of your display.
You can double check on your monitor, it will display 4K in this case, or whatever resolution you have.

ENJOY !

FYI: the latest version of GeForce Experience lets you do this on a per game basis also.

Not if your game doesn't support full screen.
If you "enable" it on new world, it just won't do shit.

It works just fine with NW if, like I said, you're using the latest, 3.24.0.123

I'm using it right now and my CPU is running at ~45% and GPU ~ 60%

Well, my CPU and GPU are running like that without Image Scaling...

    And I'm using 3.24.0.123.

There's no Image Scaling on "borderless window" games.

    Actually, from the nVidia website:

    https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5280/~/how-to-enable-nvidia-image-scaling

*For games that don’t offer Full Screen mode or Image Scaling is not getting engaged, you can set the resolution of your desktop equal to in-game resolution, which will enable NVIDIA Image Scaling. It is recommended to use NVIDIA Control panel to set or switch between scaling resolutions on desktop

    And:

Image Scaling nativity works when the game or application is running in Full Screen mode (e.g: “exclusive full screen” in some games -  not “borderless windowed” or “fake fullscreen”).
    • For games that don’t offer a proper Full Screen mode and Image Scaling is not getting engaged, you can set the resolution of your desktop equal to in-game resolution, which will enable NVIDIA Image Scaling. It is recommended to use the NVIDIA Control panel to set or switch between scaling resolutions on desktop.

What you are doing is probably just enabling the sharpening without the resizing.

I invite you to just try what I suggested. You will notice the HUGE difference when Image Scaling is REALLY engaged.

Now if you really have a trick that doesn't involve doing that and which works, I'm taker, I'd rather not have to change resolution each time I want to play a game in "borderless window".

Don't know what to tell you lol.

On my GeForce Experience, on the NW optimize page, I have an icon that looks like a wrench for "custom settings." I click on that and I have several resolutions to choose from to upscale to my native 1440p.

I set it there and my in game settings are set to that resolution and fully upscaled to 1440p with graphics indistinguishable from my Very High settings when I run it at 1440p.

    It works for me.

    Thanks, gonna look again.
As I said, I'd prefer such a solution rather than having to tweak.

This said, my "solution" also works for all "fake full screen" games ;)
Playing Kingdom Come Deliverance in 4K finally (upscaled).

EDIT: I looked at those settings again.
Sorry, but those settings do NOT enable Image Scaling. You get indeed a lower resolution, so faster rendering, but without the benefit of upscaling. That's how I was playing before.
Tested again right now: If I'm changing my desktop resolution before launching the game, the image quality is so much better it's not even funny.

    Try it.

That's what we are talking about right ?

    @The_Korrigan

Yup. I even doublechecked by turning on the image scaling watermark and I have the purple NIS on the top left corner in NW.

I haven't tried it with any other windowed full screen game but it definitely works for New World's version of "Full Screen." It may be theirs is slightly different?

Edit: Just thought of something. I have "experimental features" (aka beta) turned on. Do you?

Yeah, I have that enabled too.

I actually found the answer by trying out that "NIS" watermark.

It must be green if the NIS is activated.

If yours is not green, it means you're just enduring a placebo effect (probably induced by only sharpening being active).

You only get the true sharpening scaling when the indicator is green.

Yeah I see what you mean now. I tried it your way and it looks much better with the watermark green... hate the larger everything on the desktop though :)

Well, I'm lucky for that, Windows changes the scaling when going from 4K to 1440p and I keep the same amount of stuff on the screen (upscaled).

And I also have a second monitor for stuff, so I don't really care.

The improvement in graphic quality is worth the hassle :)

Oh, and if you want to keep your icon order on the screen even if you change resolution, there's a little free application called "DesktopOK" ! :)
