I dont know if its "satisfying", but I recently acquired "No Man's Sky".

They released it in 2016 and keep improving it ever since.

Its not a flawless game by a long shot, but its certainly full of things to do and kept me entertained for half a year or so.

You would probably like Subnautica if you have not tried it yet

I define sandbox as do what you want when you want and lots of it. Even if it's lots of side quest.

I think this especially so if the choices you make while doing what you choose impact the game world, as is often the case in single-player games.

Such games have at least elements of sandbox, or at least can feel so, making your definition apt enough in my view.

Subnautica I think is massively under rated game, even with its Overwhelming popular reviews on steam.

I never would have thought I would have liked an underwater based game.  I think this holds a lot of people back from the game.  However the devs did a wonderful job with it.

I recently recommended it to a good friend, they reluctantly gave it a try and are so surprised at how much they like the game.

I would stick with Subnautica and not the more recent Subnautica Sub Zero, as I have been told the 2nd game is not even close to as good as the original.

Hopefully this thread keeps going. I've found a couple of games via this thread that I've really enjoyed so far, so thanks all for posting so far. lol definitely paired up nicely with the winter sales.

There are so many games I have absolutely loved over the years, that I could never name them all, without missing more than one.

But my favorite game of all time bar none is....

Microsoft Flight Simulator and flight simulation as a whole.

There is a whole industrial ecosystem built around MSFS and the only money Microsoft receives in the process is the money they make from the base software, expansions,\ and optional store commissions.

There are persistent worlds where MSFS is but an intermediary.

I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing a better model.

Now that I've come out of the closet ;)

    Ultima 3

Because back before MMORPGs, I used to play this in my friends basement and we would all crowd around the computer and take turns.  I still vividly remember the final fight and how the "grass" started attacking us and we were all like "HOLY CRAP!!!!"

My brother and I used to have a couple toots and play this ;)

    Ultima Exodus ;)

I would like to add hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy.  Text based.  There was a time when text based games were all the rage.  It was kind of fun, because you had to visualize the environment if you were going to solve it.

All time is hard to define for me, because I am not sure the older games 20+ years ago will still be relevant now.

Here is a list of games I really enjoyed that I think are still current enough to enjoy today.

    Ark (modded)
    Frostpunk
    Subnautica
    Valheim
Plants vs Zombies: Game of the Year version
    Terraria
    Rimworld
    Factorio
    Satisfactory
Civ 4 - Always liked this version best
    Creeper World 4
    Starcraft 2

Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.

Just all the Ultima single player RPGs.
My favorites still being Ultima IV and Ultima VII.

Two years ago or so, I also had a lot of fun with a little game called "Noita". Very fun side scroller where almost everything can be destroyed.

I have no clue why you would say that.

A big part of why No Man's Sky was so fun is that you have an extreme amount of star systems to explore and since various things, such as star ship types, are dependent upon the star system, you have the element of finding good star systems where you can get special stuff.

Subnautica is one single planet ...

THe feel of the two games is very similar....to me, Subnautia feels like No Mans SKy underwater...ITs not as vast no, but still the ocean is a pretty marvelous place to explore...but to each their own...sorry if I insulted you with the suggestion.

They are both exploration games mate don't worry about it. I think you had suggested Subnautica to me before and I checked it out and I'm still playing it. What an amazing game. Although it caused me to develop a couple of new phobias but it is awesome all around.

Surprised to not see God of War (the latest) on the list. So I'm adding that:

    God of War
Zelda: a link to the past
    Pokémon: Yellow/1st gen
    Pokémon: Silver/2nd gen

For the record going underwater in No Man's Sky is a total PITA.

Tolerable only if you prepare for it.

    1. Get the diving modules so you can refresh oxygen.

    2. Get the special module that allows you to enter it and recover.

    3. Obviously play one of the easier modes, like normal, and get a huge stack of oxygen, preferably on your freigther (you can access the freighter inventory from anywhere if you have gotten the necessary upgrades to do so). If you play on survival or permadeath, you can only stack up to 1000 in a freighter slot (vs 9999 in normal), so that would be a lot more of a PITA (in general I no longer play survival or permadeath exactly because you get so much less inventory).

Bioshock (original), Life is Strange: True Colors, Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, Doom: Eternal.

That list definitely isn't exhaustive, just a few off the top of my head.

For me, its Elden Ring. Its the best RPG I have ever played. Its challenging. Its all about exploring and being rewarded for doing so. You are always on edge playing it, even trash mobs can kill you if taken by surprise. I am 150hrs in and still keep coming back to the game as I have only killed about 1/2 of the achievements thats mostly you get from killing bosses. I am almost done the main story but I dont feel compelled to finish the game. I just keep exploring and finding delightful things to do.
