Just picked up Endwalker, going to sit down tomorrow and check it out. Haven't played in six months, so gotta get back into the swing of things.

I hope it wins. It's not only a very good game, but it will always have a special place in my heart. Last year it really helped get me through some very tough times. It kept my mind occupied, helped me to focus on something other than my grief and begin to move on. I don't think I'll ever stop subscribing to it, even when I'm not playing. It really is by far the best theme park MMO available, and I don't see that changing.

It'll probably win, since the game consistently ranges from marginally decent to great depending on whom you ask, which is sadly a lot more than any other MMORPG I can think of right now.

Played at first release dumpster fire. Stuck around for the rerelease. The game was decent, didn't like the daily quest system. I could not get past the fact that I liked FFXI better. Ultimately quit for the same reason I quit FFXI. The releases were all Japan centered. Which I understand to an extent being that is the company home. But, it was way too much to overcome. I am sure it is not that way now. But, that is why I didn't go back.

Today, all I am seeing in the news is that the devs have hurt feeling because of "Abusive" fans. This doesn't sit well to me because of the past of the game. The devs usually misinterpret "Passionate" for abusive. Those fans would not be jerks if they didn't feel strongly. The game would not be where it is today had it now been for those "Passionate" fans.

One of the only games I hear consistently good things about. Worst I hear about it is, it's pretty good but didn't hold my interest.

I'm constantly baffled by the popularity of the game. I deeply love MMOs, but just find it the most boring option of all time. It just feels like a purely instance-focused game, where the open world is bland and empty. Even then, every instance/dungeon feels like the same, circular arena with a different boss and mechanics. Visually it's not even trying to draw me into feeling I'm in a dungeon or cave or whatever. I just don't understand it.

Because your are either playing it wrong or it's just not for you. Most people play it for the story arc. Also you can unlock Hard, Extreme versions of all dungeons, raids and trials to make things more challenging. If the world seems empty, it's because NPC that a part of the story are dynamic, you need to actually play the content to understand what is happening in each map.

Is it not for him, definitely. Is he "playing it wrong"... No of course not. He's not wrong about the game, it's mostly focused on instanced gameplay, heavily scripted fights in arenas and sadly the open world is mainly for quickly passing through as you level, making it feel empty (along with being able to sit in town and que for most things).

The game looks great visually and the story is one of the best in an MMO, great music and the FF stuff is fun to see, but the core is mostly been there done that since WoW. It's only so huge tbh because Blizzard turned into a joke and the big influencers shifted.

It's not for me, especially coming off FFXI for so many years (75 era), but I can see why that WoW crowd would love it.

SMT 5, Tales of Arise, MH: Rise, Bravely default 2, pathfinder:WotR. That's not including some of the indie gems like Fuga: Melody of Steel.

I think too many people treat the current hot MMO as the be all end all tbh.
