There's a lot here to like, and one my major gripes with the game is a lack of meaningful solo content. However, it currently stands as the best looking MMO out there, in my opinion, so adding better graphics, while always good, seems like a waste of resources to me.

I dont think I have ever heard anyone complain about the graphics...Now the tutorial and some other issues, yes, but graphics? No

Gotta be careful about saying it's a 'massive graphics overhaul'.
They're reworking the lighting, shading, and textures, if I recall correctly.

But not a "major graphics overhaul".

Reading this after what we got on SWTOR with the new “expansion” makes me want to come back lol

I may be just a small town country dungeon runner... but that is my only problem with the game. The constant requirement to do dungeons to advance the story line. While they may be great dungeons, quite frankly the mechanics break my brain at times.

The graphics are good compared to many other MMO's today.

But that said, there are a lot of textures in the world that are quite low res and could use an upgrade.
In a lot of areas in the world, shadow and lighting is very limited or even absent, giving quite a flat looking feel.

It's exactly those areas Joshi is talking about in improving.

This is really putting FFXIV on my radar, it is the only big name MMO I never played and have subsequently thought about trying out. All the "trust" stuff though is just a giving in to solo players and grouping is what that MMO's are meant to be about and this is one of that last MMO's that gives even a nod to grouping.

The expansion stories on their own are worth the ride. I will probably get back into FFXIV at some point and a graphical overhaul surely makes me more eager. Especially the GUI needs a clear update.

The term ‘massive’ is probably a bit over the top. The graphics engine isn’t changing, and as a previous post says it is upgrades to lighting, shaders etc.
The increased Trust system will appeal to those who like solo content and the reworking of some instances will help grouping.
Of course the game forums reaction has been the usual mix of ‘yes’ ‘no’ ‘great’ ‘bad’ ‘just what the game needed’ ‘there’s other things they should be doing’.
Overall the game is a tremendous success story, with the team looking determined to keep it that way for many years to come.
Now- Other MMOs. Raise your efforts to seriously challenge this game.

As to the soloing content with Trust system, I like the approach. I'll be leveling Sage that way.  It's the one new class I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out for my "play style". I'm 70 years old and my reaction times may not be so great. With the approach used with the Sage class to healing, I need a group that wont give me a lot grief for my failings at times. Also a note to those here, as I have stated concerning my "abilities" it's the one reason you'll never see me in a EX or Savage raid.

I do agree with you, for the most part -- many will see this as an opportunity to only play solo. But I can't tell you how many times I've wished that I could run more dungeons using the trust system, if only to get some of the basic mechanics down before signing up for roulettes. I like FFXIV, but I'll admit that I'm slower to learn some of the more complex dungeon mechanics -- maybe I'm just getting too old.

Trust system sounds great! My major gripe with the game was always being forced to group to continue the story/leveling.

MMORPGs aren't about grouping. Rather, grouping is one of the many things MMORPGs can but need not be about, like crafting or housing or PvP and whatever else is crammed into one's game of choice. Grouping is but one island in the MMORPG archipelago.

Excited for this!  I might be the only one who found the muted, flat colors and textures to be kind of a turn-off.  The models look great, but the color palette and ground textures feel very Xbox 360-era in comparison.  An animation update wouldn't hurt either as characters don't feel particularly weighty when they move(especially other PCs) and jump animations aren't the smoothest.

Constantly updating the tech worked wonderfully in keeping WoW relevant.  I'm glad SE took the same path.

It looks Xbox 360 era because the graphics engine was designed for the PS3.

FF14 is still being held back by PS3 limitations, this graphics upgrade is bringing some things up to PS4 level.
