Hogarts Legacy 14 min Reveal - Impressions

TwistedSister77TwistedSister77 Member EpicPosts: 1,144
edited March 2022 in The Pub at MMORPG.COM
(Starts on 15min mark)

My initial thoughts:

Pros:
- Interesting combat with numerous spells & combos
-  Immerse you in many student activities and lores
- Emphasizes exploration and and puzzle solving
-Great graphics
-Mini games for crafting
-Housing
-Class specialization (charms, potions, beastmaster, herbs, etc)
-Broom flying (didn't see any combat on broom though)

Cons:
-Stated "Open World Action RPG" - apparently not an MMO or coop  :'(
- Did not show UI, no idea about complexity.
- No Quidditch?  At least not in the reveal.
-The Goblin Rebellion main plot seems meh... hopefully that is the start of a bigger overarching evil plan... and it gets more sinister and complex from there.

Overall, I must have had my wires crossed... because I thought this was going to be the first MMO Harry Potter.  That really disappoints me.

As far as a solo, story driven, open-world ARPG.  I'll rate it against the pack when it comes out... but gets some bonus points, right off the start, for letting me play in the Potter IP.

Huge interest, over 200K watched the stream Live... will probably have over 10Million views in a few weeks.

I'm interested.

I'm not even a Harry Potter fan (I did enjoy the first Fantastic Beasts though), and I still find this compelling.

This could be the best selling game of the year if it is anywhere near as good as it looks.

One wonders how much one's house will effect the game's story. It would be disappointing if it were just a flavor thing, when games like Fire Emblem: Three Houses already show the potential for meaningful house alignment in a similar setting.

I enjoyed all the movies but have no interest in the books and I'm so getting this.

watching this and having the narrator talk about your "classes" makes me wonder if this will just be a "college simulator" and you'll have to take tests and write papers and actually get passing grades ....

"but I want to fight the goblins!!!!"

"sorry, your herbology grades are way down and you have finals in a week, start hitting the  books ... "

We have plenty of games in a school setting. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Persona, and the aforementioned FE3H.

I picture this being pretty Persona-like.

This looks excellent. Love the art style they went with: photorealistic enough but not too much.

    Was a joke.

On another matter, and far more serious, do Hogwarts students learn math and literature and grammar or anything that they can use after school? Do they graduate and realize  that they have no practical skills?

If that's the case, is there a Wizarding College?

Semi-disappointed to hear that the player will be a 5th year student but I dunno what I expected, I guess doing all 7 years is asking for a lot. Its also confirmed that the player will be able to use the Unforgivable Curses, so I hope they play on alignment a lot. Haven't played a game with meaningful alignment choices since some of BioWare's older stuff.

That’s what I am hoping for as well with an alignment system of some kind allowing for potentially 2 play throughs, virtuous and sinister. Some of the battle scenes had me thinking of Darth Vader force pulls from the battlefront series.

I don’t recall seeing anything Ui related like inventory etc but I will watch it again later in case I missed it.

Why do you think wizards would benefit from being good at literature, grammar or math? In world of Harry Potter what they need are ability to do spells and some slaves house elves to do menial work.

With that said, they do write a lot of essays and read a lot of books during their studies (at least in the books), so apparently they can write and read well enough. Arithmancy was elective subject.

I can see we are going to have to put up with muggles who have not read the books or in some cases not even seen the films! The books and films focus on the magic of course, but I doubt you would pass your Owls without a grounding in English and Maths. Indeed pupils may get private tuition in that before they go to Hogwarts.

It would be great if there was classroom play in the game, but that sounds roleplay-ish and so I doubt we will get it.

Not a personal fan of the Potterverse, but I admit its an intellectual property that could make some gaming companies a shit ton of money.

The new movies never came up to the original series, but then it was a hard act to follow.

I really dislike the IP. But if the game is really good.... maybe?

Oh please no, can't they just make it bad, so I am sure I won't play this Sorry Potter thing?

There are 14 prior Potter games, only 4 cracked 70s on metacritic... the rest are terrible (the highest rated one, a Lego Potter).

You've been spoiled far too long by terrible Potter games... 15th try for an actual great Potterverse game ;)

Although, the trend is not our friend :(

The best thing about this game could be no quidditch!  Classic example of a game designed by someone who doesn't understand game design.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

That is a good point I never considered (I think I played one of the Harry Potter games before) so the fact the hardcore fanbase is used to disappointment would allow folks to brace themselves for a lousy game.

This was my prediction for the years potential biggest disappointment in that other thread but after seeing the reveal last week (and reading some other websites takes on the reveal) I have some excitement regarding the title. Adding in your information about the IP’s previous game track records, with mediocre being the cream of the crop it seems (happily) my prediction will be wrong.

Looks like they are aiming for a Holiday release (September to November 2022) and since it was delayed already from last year hopefully it has had enough time in the developer oven. Will be keeping an eye on this as more snippets come out and I may break my rule and make it a day 1 purchase.

Well over 6 million views of the trailer between the Sony, IGN, and GameSpot channels.  Very positive reception by likes, comments, and 3rd party impression reviews.

Thirst is strong for a good Potter game. :)

I've seen worse. Might be good.

Nevermind. They replaced John Cleese as Headless Nick.

    I hope this bombs.
yeah, not sure why they did that. Maybe he charged too much.
